In the old days, devs used to release demos way before the game launched. But since most games can't sell themselves on quality these days, they don't allow it because people might not pre-order.

So developers/publishers have no right to cry when people decide to pirate their £50+ game to demo it before parting with their cash. Especially when Steam etc have a no refund policy once you have downloaded the game.

Would you buy a couch without testing it out first?

Definitely not. As far as I know, you can demo mobiles, listen to music before you buy it, try on shoes, demo a car etc. Games? No. Making games in the 90s and for a short time in the 2000s was about something more than just making money. Sadly, nowdays everything goes around the shares market. Turnover has to be good or investors will withdraw money. There are just a few companies left that make some good stuff nowdays. Sadly :)
