It's great! Really!

Make me remember the time when the japonese rule the industry. You know, before they gone bananas.

LOL! One of the best japonese's challenging game of the recent memory was made by poles (the right is poles or polish?). Crazy times.

PS.1: But the tutorial is really crap. I don't even know if I can call it a "tutorial". It's more like sparse tips.

PS2.: Sorry for the english.
With no talent invested, combat seems like it was designed for a one-on-one fight. I can take down any opponent with the correct amount of blocks, signs, slashes etc... I only start to have trouble when 8 of them show up!

Not supposed to be easy to battle 6 enemy. Also I think when you level the Sword focus you get whirlwind attack.
I'm old as dirt (45) and I'm loving the combat in the game. It's all about strategy and tactics. This combat system gives you so many more advantages that (most) of your enemy's don't have. Blocking is really effective, just make sure to keep an eye on your vigor bar. You have bombs, traps, swords, speed, dodging, potions, and signs at your disposal. Learn to use them. QUEN IS YOUR FRIEND!! Many times at the beginning of a game, I like to make a save just before combat, and play that same scenario over and over a few times, until I get the hang of the combat system and it's controls. With a lot of games nowadays, you can just rush in and button mash your way to victory. It gets boring pretty quickly. This is so much more fun, and satisfying, than that.

TL;DR Take a little while and learn to use all the tools, and their controls, at your disposal. It makes it very fun.

Now if they could make the font size a little bigger, and leave the messages up a little longer, it would be even better.

kaziglu: Irrelevant. Even bad games tend to come with tutorials. This is a good one and I've learned enough already, but I'm an experienced gamer and not Joe Customer. Joe Customer isn't even finding his way here. Woe to him for that? Not good business.

Speaking of in-game hints. I just had one flash by in less than a second mid-combat. I wonder what it was about...
Have you tried looking in your journal? Under the heading of "Tutorial"?
Good ideas -- thanks for your input. I'm an old guy just a wee bit younger than you (40). Good to see another old hand out there!
LOL well im old as dirt as well (45) and Ive actually swung a sword before so lets get rid of the "realistic" BS all ready! A sword fighter doesnt flip and roll and tumble like your forced to do in The Witcher 2!

To many kids throw around this "realistic" tag far to easy!

This IS Twitch button mashing combat, not stratagy/tactical combat!

Having said all that Ive accepted the twitch aspect and just stopped thinking and started buttom mashing with occational roll away to heal up and Im winning every combat now. The trick to TW2 combat is ...

DONT OVERTHINK IT!

Its still terrible combat for a RPG IMO, but not as broken as I originally thought yesterday!

Thats about the best I can say for the combat.

Im 45 and my freinds are a few years younger or few (up to 20) years older and not one likes this combat.

This combat was designed by kids for kids and thats a shame when you look at the rest of the game and keep in mind what age group was targetted (legally).

I would have enjoyed a tactical and strategic system much much more but ill raise the F- to a C- now, but thats as high as it goes from me folks.

Thank god the rest of game (with one exception) is so much better!
LOL as the starter of this thread, i would like to take back what i said, the combat is alot better once you get better, you cant just rely on your sword, u have to use everything you have:)

Well I never used the word "realistic" anywhere in my post. Not sure where you got that from.

Anyway, if you want to tank and button mash your way through the game, that's your business. But if you really take some time and learn to use the system, you won't have to button mash. Your enemy's will be dropping like fly's in your wake.

That's all I'm saying. You really do need all the tools at your disposal, to survive. If you take the time to learn to use them, it makes combat much more fun and satisfying.

but i want a bit more finesse. the ability to stay in battle for longer without relying on rolling away.

if you play well you should be able to fend off a whole bunch of people but if you screw up you should have to retreat and rethink. but as it stands it lacks the ability to stay close to the action by stripping us of our ability to block.

the way i see it blocking can be done many ways.

-hold for autoblock

-tap when they attack, harder but feels more rewarding.

after they fix blocking everything else should be fine for me.

you wont just grind enemies, you will be more willing to take chances (but can cost you dearly)

you can and maybe will level up more then just the sword.

Combat is fine imo. My biggest complain is that boss battles are just goddamn awful and annoying.
I really enjoy the combat system, personnaly.

I had to develop my combo and actually think and react to my enemy, the distance between us, etc. I had to use magic, alchemy, daggers, parry, dodge, trap, all that shit.

I really, really liked it =)
So let me get this straight. In a vast ocean of 'God of War' clones, where nothing is realistic and every move is exaggerated nonsense, people are bitching about CD red making a combat system that looks and feels realistic? My character isn't swinging the sword like its a baton? No exploding masses off bloody goo? I have to actually think and prepare, to use strategy!!!??? What in the holy f*ck did you guys want?
At first I found it difficult and easily got killed even by just a weak guard but when I got the hang of it, it was a breeze.

I like the combat more in the original Witcher, visual and sound queues for each six attacks.

RIPOSTE!

oh yes it was impressive for sure. if a little clunky how it looked. also a bit easy. but it had its own charm

this game had skill now but lacks charm
