sollus: This is understandable given that many people prefer RPG's because traditionally(especially if you look at D&D), their characters would do the work for them, and they can play the game at a pace they enjoy.
Actually this isn't true at all... Before BG1, Fallout and the like, many RPG's were focused on combat or rather dungeon crawling, with puzzle solving. Stats did play an important role but positioning and movement were important.

It can be argued that TW1, TW2 or even Gothic and risen (maybe also PS:T) are not really RPG's since you don't really get to build your character and decide on his identity.

mitrydates: All I disagree with is terminology. Once again someone lied to me calling an action RPG game "a role-playing game". I am old RPG fan and - as someone already mentioned - I like to play at my own pace, getting immersed not only by the story, but also the character I play with. Witcher 2 somehow deceived me.

If I knew it before I had bought it. I'd consider waiting for same sale.
So every non turn-based RPG isn't an RPG at all? Masterpieces in RPG history like Ultima Underworld or System Shock are merely action games because of their action elements? Both thous titles require quick reflexes and proper timing by the player.

You can't play "at your own pace" if a bad ass Beholder and his Gang of Skeletons chases you down the Abyss if you want to survive :)
this is the best battle system in a modern rpg game. You must use everything, there is stats and everything...

I just solved this one: I can always pause the game :)
I think witcher 2 is more of an action game now than an rpg since it depends more on the player skill than on the character stats to win most fights.
But it is actually a very good action game with some added rpg touch to it.

As far as we discuss the RPG games it's not hard to prepare good battle system. Most of cRPG games do good in this matter. The problems usually start when we try to find a relatively good simulation of other skills, like social, technical or science skills.

So far there's only one game (actually two parts of it) I have in mind which adapted your character's abilities and traits. Fallout. You know what I'm talking about once you compare playing extreme idiot with very low Intelligence or a brain who knows everything. Skills mattered. Clicking the mouse was less important.

Too bad you didn't play Witcher 1 then, because if you did, you'd know exactly what to expect from a sequel and what type of game you're playing.

I love fallout (1-2, tactics, betsheda can go fuck themself for their dumbed down console garbage) and of course baldurs gate 1-2, but this is NOTHING like an CRPG and more important it was NEVER sold to be an CRPG either.

@Endoryl

Not sure what you're talking about, but this is an rpg just like witcher 1. A game doesn't have to use D&D in order to fit a certain category.

Witcher 2 is for me how I viewed baldurs gate 2 a decade ago (time goes by so fast), a great sequel that surpasses the original on all sides.

I, personally, will concede that I was mislead by the Witcher 2's battle mechanic changes from the first game to this one, but it's a lot more visceral and I like that a lot.

I knew I'd eventually find this sort of war boiling up... Can't blame people for making fun games. Maybe you like more complex, as do I, but we all need a break.

I personally loathe any game's combat that uses D&D3. KotOR? Great game, terrible combat.
We had QTE in Witcher 1 as well, each time the sword lit up...
Hello,

The Witcher 1 was no Rpg at all, so is TW2 not. It was clear from the beginning. Here several reasons why TW series was never a roleplaying game to begin with.

Your stats have nothing to do with the outcome of battles. Its only the timing of your skills that let you win a battle.

Your stats have no influence on the outcome of any dialoge in the game. Only your own choice of dialoge decides

You can't decide to go a stealthy route when you want to.

You can not solve problems by different solutions. Everything is just predefined.

You can only play the role of Geralt of Rivia. There is no choice in gender or class.

You can spent Talentpoints in different skills, but all the three talent trees does not differ so much from each other. You have to rely on your sword skills too much. Magic and alchemy is mostly for enhancing your characters attributs.

So per definition The witcher 1 and 2 is no roleplaying game but an action rpg. It is only advertised as Hardcore RPG but that is total bullshit. As an actionrpg it is quite good but far from the best RPG in 2011, because it is no RPG at all :).

Have a nice day.

Bad choice of words from my part regarding beths fallout. It's just that I wanted a proper fallout 3 sequel and what we got wasn't exactly "great". Hey if you enjoy fallout 3 or the sequel that's cool it just means we have different views on games. Playing a game that's been dumbed down (in my opinion) compared to the original doesn't mean the player only likes "simple" games as some people on "no mutants allowed forum" likes to belive.

I've seen fans which prefer betshedas fallout over interplay, as you know i'm not one of them, but they do exsist :)
This game got all the things that makes it a RPG, it just hasn't got the combat system you like. Purist should take a look at http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/

Stats and character skills mattered much more in witcher 1 than player skill.
Try to play thru all of witcher 1 as a swordman with the sword style at unleveled. Now level them and notice that you still have to click when the sword flash but the game suddenly got much easier, while it didn't take much more skill on your part to do those timed clicks.
We are just saying that witcher 2 is more dependant on player skill than on character stats and skills.
Not that it's a bad game. So far I prefer witcher 2 to witcher 1. :)

I thought about debunking most of the stuff you mentioned, but hey this picture is good enough :)

I will say no more, that is all people...

The Witcher 2 is a FAR more better rpg than the following games: the entire betsheda franchise (fallout, elder scrolls), dragon age 1-2 and "let's watch a final movie fantasy (all after 7)

vivasawadee: Nothing wrong with it, I was hoping for less emphasis on dexterity required during combat. My reactions aren't what they used to be which makes the game very hard.
avatar
salacious: rpg doesn't have to mean easy combat
The difficulty of a combat has nothing to do with how the player interaction is. Remember Dragon Age Origins? Very hard combat for people, who were not used to use their heads and the pause function. So Bioware dumbed the combat difficulty down with several patches. Remember some older Final Fanatsy game? Classical turn-based combat and sometimes VERY HARD against bosses. No reflex skills needed, just clever usage of your chars abilities.

And remember Jade Empire from Bioware? Was advertised as an RPG. I hoped for something like in the vein of KOTOR or NWN and got a BeatEmUp and i sucked so hard with this game, i de-installed and sold it the day i first played it.

So ... i can understand the original poster, when he feels that TW2 is getting tooo much action-oriented, relying on reflexes and muscle skills you WILL loose with the years going by :) I myself am 44 years old and the more action oriented a game is the more i suck the older i get. Please, CD Project, think of us poor old people. We want to play Witcher games too! :)
