Still have to wonder what else is going on in the engine, and if it even recognizes all the monster types, like necrophages.

For example: if I mod necrophage oil to do an insane amount of bonus (not crit) damage, then the steel sword is still very weak against them. Of course the silver sword isn't doing anything extra either. There might be a damage cap in the engine for the steel sword against monsters, but if I instead mod necrophage oil to do a min/max damage vs everything like Falka's Blood, then the rotfiends start exploding against my steel sword like nobody's business.

At least a hopped up hanged man's venom does do noticeable extra damage with the steel sword against humans, so it's not as if all types don't work. Silver sword is still as useless as ever in that situation.

So oils/whetstones do not work on your silver sword?

Don't know about whetstones, but definitely not oils.
The whetstones are from the Ultimate Swordsman's Suit DLC (Amazon.com pre-order bonus), which is where I ordered the game from. I should have known. First it is a suit that is not actually a suit, but rather some enhancements, and now we know it doesn't work at all.

I'm kind of glad to know it is not only the DLC stuff that has a problem with silver swords, but I'm also a little pissed that I have been wasting my time using oils on my sword.

I guess it is just more outsourcing problems. This time it is the beta testers, or lack thereof.

This game is great, but it could have been better.

Whetstones work fine on steel swords. It's just that it doesn't work (and oils don't work) on silver sword. So I would say it is not a DLC problem seeing that oils are available in the vanilla game.

vAddicatedGamer: They are listed under silver sword in the inventory and there is an icon / timer, but comparing the before / after damage range shows no difference.

vAddicatedGamer:
The oilstone/whetstone enhancement is only indicated upon the initial application and although it does persist thru a reload(after death) The inventory sword icon does not indicate the enhancement any longer, although the icon on screen is still active(I modded for longer potion durations)

That was my error not noticing the onscreen timers and thus my question of mousing over the potion timers for identity.
Unless someone has done these test with the top of the line swords there is no way to know that the claim is true. The random numbers on damage are greater than the added bonus from the oils/wetstones. So far only one person claims to have seen this.

I tried testing it on a beginning sword and it is inconclusive. And another poster reacehed the same conclusion. We need to either make a mod that gives the bonus 100% or do testing with the best swords. So far no one has done that.

Actually, that has been done. It's pretty easy to mod it.

Just to add to my linked post, the silver sword with the greatly increased min/max Falka's Blood potion (talking like damage +1000%) had no increased effect on rotfiends, whereas it did using a steel sword on the same rotfiends.

The bottom line is that the silver sword does not benefit from oils (and most likely other temporary enhancements) unless somebody can come up with a clear case contradicting that.

Thanks for confirming the case.

As to your question about whether the engine recognizes monster types, I think they do, at least my Deithwen was doing the 25% extra damage towards Gargoyles. So the issue is probably just the oil effects not being applied on silver swords.
I gave it a try myself, with Falca's Blood and some Harpies. I can confirm the bug occurs as described by vAddicatedGamer: With the oil on my steel sword, damage stat on the character screen increases from 40-46 to 44-50, and damage observed in the combat log increased from 12-15 to 14-16. If I apply the oil to my silver sword, damage stat on the character screen stays at 39-44, and damage observed in the combat log remains at 43-49.

I'll add this problem to the List of known Bugs.
Oh, was just browsing around and there was already another thread with a similar problem (specter oil not granting bonus damage against spectres).

Just adding to this thread for completion purposes
