The missing sound glitch is a very common problem with the first suffering game, until some year ago I found IndirectSound that gog uses to fix the sound, it works. But it introduced a new problem, random freeze crashes. How much it crashes depends on the computer, my old computer was bad and crashed 1-2 times a level. My laptop could play the whole game with only 5-6 crashes. But my current new computer crashes in the first intro cutscene or after that.

Anyway, I found another direct sound fix some week ago that worked flawless, game didnt freeze a single time.

Creative ALchemy Universal 1.00.08
on PCGamingWiki

1: Remove the old dsound files in the game folder
2: Add the suffering game path in the ALchemy program
3: change Buffers to 8
4: Add The Suffering to ALchemy-enabled games in the program

new dsound files should appear, I dont know if you have to remove the old ones or if it replaces the old ones, but i removed them just to be sure.

I hope it works for you guys having problems so you can play this amazing game from my childhood.

I can confirm crashes are caused by the old IndirectSound version. The version bundled with GOG version is 0.12, the latest one is 0.13 and this one doesn't crash.

I included it with my patch: https://www.gog.com/forum/the_suffering_series/the_suffering_series_aio_unofficial_patch

However, ALchemy is still the best if you want the game to sound like the PlayStation 2 version. It does need additional software to work right though. If you have actual Creative sound card, then it can be set up without any extra steps.

For people with on-board sound cards, it's a bit tricker. I use Creative Soundblaster X-FI MB3 (it's not free), a software based solution that adds virtual sound card to the PC, which can, among other things, convert surround sound to stereo and with help of HRTF filters, you can get some sort 3D sound from plain stereo headphones.

But the point of interest for old games are the included Creative ALchemy and Host OpenAL, the latter being the key for ALchemy to produce the right sound. In order for ALchemy to pick it up though, Sens_oal.dll located in C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directories must be renamed to ct_oal.dll.

And don't forget to turn on 3D buffers and EAX in Riot Engine Configuration dialog on the Sound tab (hold Shift when starting the game).
