I can't run the game because it keeps saying direct X 8.1 isn't installed. Anything I can do to fix this?

I have the exact same issue myself. Reinstalled it, no luck. Even looked and found an old setup for Direct X 8.1, installed it in the folder and nothing. Really annoyed because it won't even launch the game.

Same here - I get a similar error with The Ties That Bind, except it is Direct X 9.0
Same problem here. Can't launch it.
Same here... Windows 10, latest updates, installed latest DirectX 9.0c too... No dice.

Hey guys. Was having the same problem, fixed it by following these steps.

1. In Windows 10, search for "Turn Windows Features On and Off"

2. In the "Turn Windows features on and off" menu, look for a selection marked "Legacy components"

3. Expand the menu, and click the check box for "Direct Play", and then click ok.

Allow Windows to install, and enable. You should be good to go. At least these steps worked for me. I would've linked the Steam post where I found the solution, but GOG wouldn't let me post the link.

Yeah that worked thanks.
This needs to be stickied!
Thank you for the help it worked and now I can play it.
I used this sentence in searching windows but searching found nothing. Why?
The error is the result of faulty DIrectX check which has been removed from my patch, so installing DirectPlay is no longer needed. The game needs Direct3D 9 and is linked against it at compile time, so if it's missing, that exact message will never have the chance to show up.

DIrect3D 9 runtime has been part of the OS since Windows XP, running dxwebsetup.exe just installs some extensions.
