Hi,

Is there a way to know the current version number of a game in GOG.com before purchasing and downloading?
I know this game had many bugs and was upgraded a few times, so I want to make sure the copy here is the latest...

If it's impossible to see the version number before purchase, can someone who has the latest version from GOG.com tell me what's the version number (it appears in the top-right of the main menu)?

Also, I know there's a bug where you can't get one of the achievements - the one you're supposed to get after beating everybody in the card game. Is this bug fixed in the latest GOG.com version?

Thanks!

My copy is old, but the installer version hasn't changed since I bought it. The game itself claims to be version 1.1.3.0377. Not sure about the achievement bug yet.
Thanks, YnK.

So your installer version is reliable enough to determine that the game hasn't been updated? I saw YouTube videos of two versions - 1.1.3.0377 and 1.1.4.0378 - the former has visual glitches that the latter fixes, and there are probably more fixes in 1.1.4 (don't know if the achievement was fixed yet in ANY version, but it definitely exists in 1.1.3).

I know that Steam updated the game to 1.1.4 some time ago, is it common for Steam to get an update and GOG.com not?

I just tried to synchronize the installer on my HDD with the one on GOG servers via the GOG downloader - it sees the files as identical, so same version for sure.

And yes, there are known cases when GOG didn't get the same game updates as Steam (Psychonauts being an example). Usually the devs/publishers are to blame.

Thanks again.

One more thing I thought of - I know that sometimes the installers don't change, but the file package includes a separate EXE patch for updating the game... I think Deponia had it, or some other Daedalic game. Perhaps the latest package download of The Night of the Rabbit includes such a patch file?

No update file currently. And when those are added, admins post a sticky topic at the top of the game forum announcing the patch (and those who own the game get a notification on their accounts).

There's an entire forum thread dedicated to monitoring updates to various GOG games, so they're usually impossible to miss:
http://www.gog.com/forum/general/the_what_did_just_update_thread
Well, that put the last nail in the coffin of my hope that GOG.com has updated this game just like Steam :(
I'm going to write to Daedalic support and complain about this, they're harming GOG's sales of the game, and also harming people who already bought it here...
They should put 1.1.4 on here now, and when the in-game achievement is fixed, they should do another update.

Thanks for your help YnK!

Hi Dragonsphere,

Just wanted to assure you that you and everyone else have the same version that is on Steam.

Let me break down the version numbers for you:

1.1 is the game's version number.

The 3 or 4 denote which service so 3 = GOG and 4 = Steam

The last 4 digits are an internal code used by Daedalic.

So, in short, the versions are the same just the numbers may seem different.

I hope this puts you guys at ease :)

Thanks for the explanation JudasIscariot, but even though it sounds very logical, it doesn't seem to be the case with this game, and I'll explain.

First, there are many other online stores selling this game, does Daedalic give a separate version number to each one? And even if they do, it would make more sense that the last string in the version number - .0377 here and .0378 on Steam - would be the store indicator. or perhaps these numbers are the update indicators? Then it would also mean that Steam has a later version.

In any case, that's not the main explanation.

See these YouTube video walkthroughs for example:

1.1.3.0377 - http://youtu.be/BS8sIeKz8QQ?t=9m5s (09:05)

1.1.4.0378 - http://youtu.be/pAkdxHnhX60?t=29m35s (29:35)

You can see very clearly that 1.1.3 has a graphical glitch that 1.1.4 doesn't have (the version numbers are seen in the beginning of the first video in each walkthrough series, you can't see them in the videos above). There are three more video walkthroughs of 1.1.3 in which the bug can be seen, and one more video walkthrough of 1.1.4 where the bug doesn't happen - so it's not a coincidence.

In addition, the following video seems to imply that version 1.1.3.0377 was sold on Steam at some point:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XFsep6aYIU
During the first seven seconds, the person who recorded the video says that this is a game that just came out today on Steam. In the top-right you can clearly see the version number.

So, what's the explanation to all this?

All the info I gave is all I got. I would suggest asking Daedalic for further clarification. I hope that helps :)

Well, as I said a few posts ago, I'm definitely going to contact Daedalic's support and complain about not updating the GOG store.

But I think GOG should perhaps also approach Daedalic and request updates. Having better versions on Steam is bad for the DRM-free revolution :)

Thanks again for all the help.

We did approach them in regards to the differing version numbers and the information I gave you above is directly from them.

Oh ok, sounds like there's some misinformation going around. I'll show them the videos, let's see what they have to say about that.
