I'm lost atm too...
I'm pretty sure you double checked that all the font names in the "gui.ini" exist in the "fonts" folder, right?

For example, "gui.ini":
bigfont=ARIAL

Fonts folder:
ARIAL.TTF

I'm sorry, I have no idea why it don't works.

I've attached a pic of my gui file for reference. I think this is exactly what I copied and pasted from your earlier comment. Everything is set to Arial, and yes, Arial.TTF is in the Fonts folder. Thank you for trying to help me, but I don't want to bother you with it forever.

It's all ok =)

Nothing wrong with your screenshot. Maybe it's cause of your language settings (hungarian?) and the game is searching for something else, not "Western" or "TEXT95". But I don't really think so. At the moment I have run out of ideas.
@thearcanist and Cattie:

I had the same problem. I have fixed it by downloading the latest ScummVM build, and by running the game with ScummVM instead of ResidualVM
(following the suggestions in a Steam community thread called 'How to run the game in 2020 [Windows 10 64-bit, completed the game with not a single bug] : TLJHD Mod')

Thanks, I'll try this again if I don't forget it this week.
I do still have another problem myself: the cutscenes/videos are not working. If someone has a suggestion for this one, I am happy to hear it :)
Thanks for posting your solution, CommonStarling.

About the cutscenes... would be helpful to know if you installed only the HD mod or the additional FMV mod (HD cutscenes) too.
The HD cutscenes are 1080 dpi / 60 fps, so you need a fast computer to play it without stuttering. A CPU like an i7-4770 or older is not working.
Heres the comment of the creator (german only):

If you don't use the FMV mod... I have no idea atm.

Thank you, Cattie. I had not found the FMV mod yet. I have downloaded and added the mod, and the cutscenes are playing now! With German text and with stuttering, but I am already happy with this :). Perhaps I could improve it by altering some settings, because my desktop computer should be good enough I think. But I will leave it like this for now. Cheers!
ScummVM 2.5.0 launched with full support for TLJ maybe GOG can update TLJ to include the GOG binaries like they did with Lucas games (giving better first time running support and cloud saves to the game)
I have now made a playthrough of TLJ on ScummVM 2.5. I made sure to reload and try all dialogue options and watched all FMV scenes, including the ones that differ depending on whether you choose to work an extra shift or not.

My system is a new, midrange laptop with Windows 10. I had the HD upgrade installed, including the FMV files in the highest available resolution.

Almost everything worked perfectly. No audio or video glitches, no police station bug, all FMVs played fine.

There were, however, two minor problems:

1. In chapter 7, inside the floating castle, there is a bug in the second room which makes it impossible to progress. This can be resolved by saving beforing entering, then turning off the HD mod in the ScummVM settings, walking through the room, then turning on the HD mod again. Reentry into the same room works fine with the HD mod.

2. After the game was completed, I could not access the extras from the main menu without turning off then on the HD mod. Although this is not in the game proper, it still is annoying and should be fixed.

When these bugs have been fixed in a ScummVM release, GOG should repackage the install files to include a ScummVM installation, as well as the HD mods. For a lot of people, this would be the easiest way to set everything up.
I can confirm that this works with ScummVM 2.5.1 on Windows 11. Thanks for the suggestion! The graphics look so much nicer when running with ScummVM, and the cutscenes work fine as well. I agree that GOG should incorporate this into the the installation package for the game. Otherwise, anyone wanting to run this game on even an old computer will need to use something like ScummVM to get it to work.
I have bad news. The new version, ScummVM 2.6.1, now stretches TLJ to wide screen. This creates a distorted image.

This is a known bug that has since been fixed in development daily builds of ScummVM (2.7.0git) and will be part of the upcoming 2.7.0 stable (soon!).

For reference this is the bug tracker ticket:
https://bugs.scummvm.org/ticket/13768
As of ScummVM 2.8.0, the two bugs I mentioned in an earlier post in this thread are gone.

I just played through the entire game again, and there are no bugs. ScummVM did crash a lot, however, but I'd guess that Windows 11 is to blame for that.

Anyway, the bugs are gone and the HD mods work great in ScummVM, so there is no reason for GOG not to package the game to run on ScummVM with the HD mods installed.
