You can play the longest Journey with ResiudualVM daily to fix most of the bugs.

No mouse trails with or without anti aliasing and there seems to be no problems with any type of anti aliasing or setting
No missing textures
I had characters leaving trails with dgvoodoo but no problems with ResidualVM
No crashing on cut scenes
No missing text in save and exit box.
Launches game on windows 10 without problems

Plus has builds for Linux and Mac

http://www.residualvm.org/downloads/#daily

To use just install ResidualVM daily then launch and add the game.

To enable anti aliasing just create profile for residualvm.exe with your GPU control panel or use somthing like nvidia inspector and use 8xQ and 8x Sparse Grid Supersampling

There still could be problems but the game looks great and was a lot better experience using ResidualVM daily

+ No black cutscenes.
ResidualVM is great, but I think the disclaimer that's on the download site should be repeated here too.

WARNING: The following builds are bleeding edge development versions made directly from our source repository. That means that they received no proper testing (usually no testing at all) and that any number of things may be broken in them. For example, they might corrupt your config file, crash frequently or might not even start. Use them at your own risk!
Yeah works fine but I'm using the German Language patch and can't find out how to make them speak german as they are speaking in english.
(Replacement of my previous post)

Problem: You got game-version 1.61 plus german voice-files and ResidualVM is switching back to english voices.

This solution is not tested with the whole game, so better make a backup of the game folder!

Edit: ResidualVM removes many atmo background-sounds (city-sounds for example), tested with a fresh installed english version from GOG.

Check if u have the voice-files in both languages.
Example:
The Longest Journey\1a\01\xarc\000a000004.iss
The Longest Journey\1a\01\xarc\000a000004.ovs

The iss-files are the original english voices, sounds and music, the ovs-files are german voices, sounds and music.

Deleting all the english files (*.iss) in all TLJ subfolders it will bring back the german voices (*.ovs).

Better would be to find a way to "re-link" the game to the ovs-files at a single point, but no idea how atm.

Additionally I recommend the epic "Graphics overhaul mod". Looks absolutely great.

Edit: Removed wrong author-name of the "Graphics overhaul mod"

The background-sound bug is patched now for Windows:
https://www.residualvm.org/downloads/#daily

The creator of ResidualVM was very quick with patching, reported May 21, fixed May 23. So if you find a bug, report it in the forum. And be nice of course, its a free tool and the TLJ-support is new and beta :)

Amazing HD neural network upscaling, though Nasovik is only sharing the word and is not the actual author.

Yop, you are right.
Hello everyone,

I'm a huge TLJ fan since hour 1. Now I found this thread about improving this game by using residualvm and the graphics mod which I downloaded from moddb.com. No I'm experiencing some negativ effects from applying the patch.

What's my actual problem:

- Videos shutter really badly
- The original Font has gone for the subtitles
- I only can start this game in windowed mode
- HD mod doesn't seen to apply - here a comparison https: //i.ibb.co/8bQsSzR/tlj.jpg (left is my game right the mod)

So first explain how i installed everything:

1.) I am using the 4CD GOG Version. After I installed it, i applied the german speech patch, my game turned german, except the cutscenes, which is fine for me.

2.) I downloaded residualvm and installed it into my TLJ folder into a new created folder called MODS.

3.) I downloaded the HD mod and just copy pasted the Xarc from the mod onto the original from my game.

4.) I started the game via residualvm and my earlier described problems occour.

Does anyone knows how to fix my problems? That would be really awesome. And I could replay my favourite game again.

Thanks in advance! :)

PS: I also own the original 4CD version in german which doesn't runs on W7 X64, If this information helps.
Hi egon.

I installed it like this on Win10:
GOG-Version of the game, manually patched the game to version 1.61, added the german audio files from my cd version, added the hd mod and the FMV-pack (HD cutscenes, 1080p, german) and I'm starting the game with residualVM (the folder of residualVM isn't important, but the "mods"-folder is for mods like the hd-mod, not for residualVM).
I don't have problems with the videos.

"Videos shutter really badly"
Maybe it's stuttering because you installed the hd-mod in the wrong way. I would try a complete new game install, add the german audio patch like you did. Now add the hd-mod here: (gamefolder) / mods / TLJHD / (all the mod-files). Now install residualVM to a folder somewere else. Now start residualVM and check if mods are switched on: engine - Load modified assets (Modifizierte Assets laden)

The HD mod don't include the cutscenes, so normally you should see the original cutscenes now without stuttering (no *.bbb-files in the folder mods/TLJHD/global/xarc/).

If you like german cutscenes add the german hd-video files (FMV pack 1080p or 720p) from moddb to your mods/TLJHD/Global/xarc/ folder. If 1080p is stuttering try 720p. If its still stuttering remove all the *.bbb files from mods/TLJHD/global/xarc/ again).

"The original font has gone for the subtitles"
There's a file called "gui.ini" in the game folder. Replace it with the "gui.ini" of your cd version (make a backup first) or open the ini and replace the font names manually. All filenames from the "fonts" folder are allowed. Needs a bit testing.

"I only can start this game in windowed mode"
Check this: residualVM - Game options (Spieloptionen) - Graphics - "Fullscreen" (Vollbildmodus).

Good luck :)

Hello and thank you for your detailed and helpfull post!

I think I am getting closer, but I'm still not there. :)

What I did this time:

1.) Install the game
2.) Apply the german patch
3.) Download the HD pack, create a folder called "mods" in the "tlj" main folder and placed it there, Thats the tree: The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\FMV DE\Global\xarc iside this folder there are .bbb files.
4.) I installed residualVM opened it up and navigated undert "Spieloptionen..." to the tab "Engine" and made sure to check the "Modifizierte Assets laden" checkbox
5.) I went to the "Grafik" tab and figured out how to switch the game into fullscreen mode
6.) I poped in the original CD1 from my TLJ and navigated to the "GUI.INI" to replace it with the one from my TLJ folder where I installed it. But unfortunately it doesnt change anything. The Text inside both ini were the same:

[TEXT95]
bigfont=Slurry
bigheight=19
smallfont=Garamond
smallheight=11

font0 = Folkard™
fontsize0 = 20
font1 = Folkard™
fontsize1 = 12
font2 = Arial
fontsize2 = 11
font3 = Bradley Hand ITC
fontsize3 = 14
font4 = Bradley Hand ITC
fontsize4 = 20
font5 = Bradley Hand ITC
fontsize5 = 16
font6 = Bradley Hand ITC
fontsize6 = 14
font7 = Florentine Script
fontsize7 = 13

I am okay with the fact videos are low resolution and in english. I only want to make the HD mod work and the fonts.
Besides I think I still don't apply the patch in the right manner. Cause originaly there is no "mod" or "mods" folder in TLJ. So how residualVM is able to recognize the files I placed into this custom folder?

Thanks in advance! :)
Ok, let's start with the HD-Mod folder. The "FMV DE" folder is wrong.

The main mod with the backgrounds should be here:
The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\...
In this folder you should find the mod files and folders. For example the modded "global"-folder is here:
The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\global\

"FMV DE" is only the cutscene-mod.
Move the modded cutscenes (the *.ddd files) into the modded "global\xarc\" folder:
The Longest Journey\mods\TLJHD\global\xarc\0a02.bbb for example.

Don't forget the comment of the creator of the FMV pack:
"Deutsche FMVs für die The Longest Journey HD Mod, aufwendig aufbereitet und motion-interpoliert auf 60 FPS. Achtung! Da es sich um die 4-fache Framerate handelt, wird sehr viel Rechenleistung benötigt, bei langsamen Systemen können die FMVs ruckeln, ein i7-4770 oder gleichwertig reicht dafür nicht aus."

Now it should work. If the cutscenes are stuttering just delete the *.bbb files from this folder again.

The problem with the fonts seems to be a bit more complicated cause i have no idea what happened. At first i would read this: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/The_Longest_Journey#Fonts
Open the "gui.ini" and change the font name behind "bigfont=" and "smallfont=". For testing you could replace "Slurry" and "Garamond" with "Arial". Now check if something changed in the game.
If so, you can change the size of the fonts with "bigheight=" and "smallheight=". If you don't like the "Arial" font you can try another font name. The font has to be in the "the longest journey\fonts\" folder.

Good luck =)

Edit: The content of my gui.ini (switched all to arial):

bigfont=Arial

fontsize1 = 8

Hello and thanks again!

I made some progress. Now I understood that the "mods" folder really exists. By accident, I typed myself the first time the name "MODS" by myself, cause I wanted to put in all the moded files into, seems like I had the same idea as it was inteded haha.

Now I also got that I need to download different files and put them into the mod folder. They mostly contain .png-files. Really much work has been done, when i switched trough those.

I also got some fonts with the hd mod, which I could change. But one thing stays left in the room.
I also got a "TLJ_PoliceStationFix.exe" file, and the crash also happened when I played trough last time, should I apply the patch again?

I must say WOW never experienced all those great details and fluent gameplay. Truly the longest journey. :)

Cheers
Police Station Fix:
I think its fixed when you use residualVM. Not absolutely sure atm. If not, fix it when it happens with the "TLJ_PoliceStationFix.exe".

Yes, I love all three games and the german voices of TLJ are fantastic.
Have fun =)
