I purchase the special edition of these game but I decided to wait until all 5 chapters were released.

Now that I am going to start playing, I figured that I can download The Final Cut.

Which version would you recommend me to play on my first try? The original 5 chapters or the final cut? I have both versions already downloaded.

Thanks
for sure i would use the final cut version. bugfixes, deletes scenes added, ingame map and so on. i cant find a reason atm to not use this version...
im not sure atm about what's the reason of your question. both versions are the same game. final cut is just a later version with additional features and small story changes.

edit: btw, if u never played "the longest journey" and "dreamfall" - the final cut got a "journal" of all characters you meet in the game, its maybe helpful for someone who dont know them from the old games.

There is in fact a reason. The developers reedited some parts of the game and those parts are only included as deleted scenes in the final cut (I liked the original beginning a lot more) which of course is not the same. In addition they changed the look of a few NPCs and it's of course subjective what you prefer.

im not sure atm, but wasnt the last game-version before the final cut without the dream and harbour-scene? and with another intro-movie too? if so, we compare versions with and without added "deleted scenes" in the game-menu. in this case the final cut is better of course. but its a while ago, so i can be wrong.
and yes, im not happy too about their decision to remove the scenes.

You are correct and I agree. The last version before the final cut indeed still had the different "previously" movie (made out of in game footage from the original Dreamfall game) and it did not include the deleted scenes at all. Luckily it still is possible (using Galaxy) to rollback to the original version which still includes them - at least that was the case when I redownloaded both versions of the game just because I wanted to have the original cut of the game. Tbh I am not quite sure if all books are included in this old release as well. Have to recheck this.

Edit: O.K. I just tested it and rolled back to the earliest release. Storytime already has changed (along with the introvideo) so there does not seem to be any reason to download the regular version as well.

Hi Markho01 or anyone else who knows the answer to my question. Sorry for interrupting. I have replayed Dreamfall chapters original version twice and a few weeks ago, decided to play it again and I made a mistake in one of the files, and ended up with a mess and deleted the game as far as I had come, BUT the mistake was severe and I decided to delete the game as far as I played. I had not been on Gog.com for a while and had no idea there was a "Final" version, so because I deleted the original game, now I can't play the original game or saves.

Is it possible that I can roll back to the earliest release game which you mention something about above? A couple of days ago, I went to Gog and saw it said "Dreamfall chapters Final". - Until two days ago, I had no idea that a "Dreamfall chapters Final" game existed - never heard of it before. I downloaded the Final the other night using Windows OS for the download, which I've done with all my Gog games, but I found after the download, that the setup files all looked different than all the other games I downloaded from Gog before, and when I tried to install the game it kept saying on every Setup file, that I needed a program to open the files. It never said anything like that in previous games either when I used Windows OS to download the game on Gog.

I am not interested in getting the "Final" version at this time.I want the original version, and when I read your message above, I am wondering if there is a way I can download the original version (I deleted the saved games also. I didn't know anything about the "Final" game, so I figured I could download the original game easily. I never thought there would ever be a "Final" game at that point. Ive never used Galaxy- played computer games for years, but I am not the best at technical issues or things different than I've used before.(I always used Windows OS for downloads)- it didn't ask me for programs to run the setups of the game like with the "Final" game which I deleted now..

I am very disappointed. It looks like I might not be able to play the original game ever again. I was a backer on Kickstarter, and played all the game parts as they came out, then the entire 5 parts when they came out.
I would be very happy if you or someone else could help me get the original game and how to download it. I need to play the original game again, not the "Final" game.

It's possible to rollback the game but not to the earliest release. To do this you'll have to download the game using Galaxy. After having downloaded the "Final Cut" release you can go to the Galaxy settings of the game and change the version. The game will then update again. (I will do a screenshot and show you how it looks a bit later).

However - I think it's more problematic that you have troubles downloading the working game here on GOG at all. Which windows do you use and which browser? Have you ever tried to use GOG downloader? The message that you are needing a program to open the files should not appear at all. Maybe the extension is missing (I heard about a bug in the download routine where this happened) and because of the wrong extension the OS did not know how to open the files. If you haven't already done so - don't delete them. Maybe I can help you step by step.

I understand but please let me ask you why you don't want to play the mostly inferior Final Cut version of the game. Yes, they deleted two scenes which you can still access through the "deleted scenes" menu. Other than that the game is identical and even more beautiful. As far as I understood the problem is that you have problems in installing either version of the game at the moment and I'd guess that we can find a solution for that. You just need to be a bit patient so that we can figure out were the problem lies.

If you don't mind the easiest way to solve your problem would be to simply install Galaxy but we can try it without the client too if you'd prefer that.

what Markho01 said. more info would help.

about the install problems with the final cut (sorry if i tell you things you know, i try to make it so easy as possible):

you need to know if your windows-version is 32bit or 64bit.

- first click the "more" button and select "classic install files" without the galaxy tools, if you dont use galaxy.

- second select "windows"

- for the 64bit windows download only the first 4 files
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 1 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 2 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 3 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 4 of 4)

the downloaded filenames are:
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247).EXE (size: 1 MB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-1.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-2.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-3.bin (size: 1 GB)

OR

- for the 32bit windows download only the last 4 files
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 1 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 2 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 3 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 4 of 4

the downloaded filenames are:
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247).EXE (size: 1 MB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-1.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-2.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-3.bin (size: 1 GB)

if you see something like ".part" at the end of a file that means the download isnt finished. maybe check the file-size.

so the FIRST of these 4 files is called "setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247).EXE" (for 64bit)
or "setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247).EXE" (for 32bit).
this exe-file is the only file you need to start and it will install the other 3 files.

On the right side of the download screen is "Windows OS" which is what I always chose before, and all the downloaded files go under "Downloads" which is the default for downloads using Windows OS so all the files for the game go there. When I downloaded Dreamfall Final cut, it downloaded about 15 or more lines of Setups of orange colour media players. I deleted them all now, so can't remember everything. They were set up files but I've never been asked before to find a program to open the files.

Did you not like the Final cut version of the game (since you say it was inferior). I haven't played the final cut version. I just saw a trailer or something and I liked the look of original game better -probably since I was more used t it after playing the original game twice and I liked the actors and liked the look of the game better. There is Galaxy heading in the downloading screen and also "Galaxy downloaders" or something. so hard to know where I should download Galaxy when looking at the downloading screen. I have downloaded many games from Gog.com in the past and never ran into the problems I am running into now.
What do you mean by installing Galaxy without the client too? what does "client" mean in the sense you use it above?

By the way, I am not sure where to leave the word (quotes) in the message or if some of them were supposed to be deleted.

"Book728"
The Client = Galaxy
On GOG you are able to install games using Galaxy or using the normal installers without Galaxy. We could try both to install the game but the easiest way to guide you would be using Galaxy meaning the GOG Client.

Just download and install it from here.
https://www.gog.com/galaxy

After starting GOG Galaxy you can simply go to your library inside GOG Galaxy and install the game directly from there. When you have done that you can rollback the game to one of the earlier releases if you still should desire.

If you don't want to use GOG Galaxy it's a bit more complicated. But first you should download all files like Cattie has told you above.

Sorry, my mistake - that was simpoly a translation error. I mean superior Final Cut. The Final Cut looks nearly exactly as the original release and they did not switch the actors. Don't know what you mean tbh.

You will find those easily after you have installed the Final Cut. It's from the main menu under Extras afair.

Cattie: what Markho01 said. more info would help.

about the install problems with the final cut (sorry if i tell you things you know, i try to make it so easy as possible):

I don't seem to be doing very well trying to download on Gog.com now. Its not that long ago, I downloaded a game and everything was fine.

you need to know if your windows-version is 32bit or 64bit.

I have 64 bit and I always chose 64 bits on the download screen.

- first click the "more" button and select "classic install files" without the galaxy tools, if you dont use galaxy.

I've never done it that way before, but did the same thing by using Windows OS

- second select "windows"

- for the 64bit windows download only the first 4 files
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 1 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 2 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 3 of 4)
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (Part 4 of 4)

I have also clicked on the 4 choices above when using Windows OS.

the downloaded filenames are:
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247).EXE (size: 1 MB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-1.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-2.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)-3.bin (size: 1 GB)

The above 4 lines are not familiar to me. Where did they come from? I always used Windows OS in the past, but even this time I clicked on Dreamfall chapters the final cut, part 1 of 4, etc. where did the setup chapters 64-5-74 etc, above come from?

OR

- for the 32bit windows download only the last 4 files
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 1 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 2 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 3 of 4
Dreamfall Chapters: The Final Cut (32-bit) Part 4 of 4

the downloaded filenames are:
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247).EXE (size: 1 MB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-1.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-2.bin (size: 4 GB)
setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247)-3.bin (size: 1 GB)

32 bit doesn't apply.

if you see something like ".part" at the end of a file that means the download isnt finished. maybe check the file-size.

so the FIRST of these 4 files is called "setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247).EXE" (for 64bit)
or "setup_dreamfall_chapters_32_5.7.4_(14247).EXE" (for 32bit).
this exe-file is the only file you need to start and it will install the other 3 files.
After I downloaded Setup dreamfall the final cut 64 bit, it went to my "Downloads" file in "users" and the first line looked something like dreamfall chapters, but didn't see EXE. I had 20 or more lines that said "setup" and when I clicked on most of them, some were media payer orange pointy files, but when I clicked on them, it said I needed a program to open them. very strange. Thanks for your suggestions. something has gone wrong at my end after I downloaded using Windows OS but I don't know what. if I did try Galaxy, there are a couple of Galaxy choices on the download screen, but why didn't Windows OS work when that is always what I use and its a choice on the download screen for Dreamfall chapters Final. I don't know what went wrong, but something did. deleted all my dreamfall files now. I didn't know that there was a new Dreamfall game (the Final), so I figured it wouldn't matter if I deleted my "original Dreamfall chapters because I still had my original Dreamfall chapters game (I didn't know there was NO Dreamfall chapters game, except for the Final. - that was a shock that my favorite original game was completely gone. Red Thread games should have left the original Dreamfall chapters, in the event that some people, like me , might want to play the original version. Not fair... Thanks.

Again: The Final Cut is not much different from the one you knew. I don't know why you think it's a different game - it's not. They changed one or two NPC models a bit and deleted two scenes. They also oncreased performance and accessibility:

When you try to open a file in windows everything depends on the extension. If it is a "exe"(cutable) windows will launch it. If it is an extension windows does not kow it will either ask you how to proceed or use the program tied to the extension. You said you saw several mediaplayer icons so I guess the "bin" extension is tied to the media player. That is nothing bad - the only question that remains is why the executable did not open the bin files. To see what went wrong you'll have to download the files again. It would be very helpful if you could do a screenshot from your download directory after you have done this (and you still have problems) so we can see how the files are looking.

To do this simply go to your download folder (where teh setup files are downloaded) and open it. Then press the keys CTRL+PRNTSCRN simultaneously. After that open paint and press the keys CTRL+V. You should now have a capture of your screen inside paint which you can save and attach here.

to add a suggestion to MarkoH01s answer:

before you download the four files again, remove all previous downloaded dreamfall chapters install-files from your download folder to prevent auto-renaming of the new downloads - because old files with the same name exist.

like MarkoH01 said, download the four files again. it needs a while, so wait until the downloads are really finished.

my fail... i forgot by default windows is hiding file extensions, so you cant see the ".exe" or ".bin".
but no problem, lets ignore the extensions:
the filename you have to double click is exactly "setup_dreamfall_chapters_64_5.7.4_(14247)". without "-1" or "-2" or "-3" at the end.

if this file still dont works and windows is asking for a program to open it i am nearly sure its because of a download problem.
while a download is in progress or when its stopped before its finished or broken the file has an extension like ".part" or ".temp" or whatever. you cant see it because extensions are hidden for you. and windows dont know how to handle files with ".part" or ".temp".
when the download is successfully completed these ".part" or ".temp" extensions will automaticly renamed, in this case to ".exe". and now windows knows what to do.

Hi Cattie and MarkoHO1

I have been busy so didn't get back. I tried some things you both said to try but so far, I haven't been able to figure things out. You both are much more experienced than me about downloading and other things I've never had a problem downloading before. I downloaded the game again but game still didn't run right. - Cattie" - you might be right, it could be a downloading problem on my part. I don't really know. I will have to try one of your instructions Cattie, and try one of Galaxy instructions MarkoHO1 mentioned.

I only get 50GB download every month (without paying) and its a week or 10 days or so, before I get next 50GB .
By the way Cattie, you mentioned something about a Windows 10 example. I have Win 7 Pro -or maybe it is just a general example. you meant. I will try again when I have more time. Or give up in frustration :) Thanks.
