I have played through this game a few times as different alignments and I found the following to be the best starting 5 (I never really add NPCs and stick with 5 PC for the whole game):

Dwarf Fighter- (The Parties tank) You could go with a Half-Orc barbarian but there are quite a few giant types in this game that are quest related and I find the Dwarf to be just the better overall front-liner in this game.

Human Cleric- (Healer and 2nd sword) I build this cleric to purely heal and deal damage. I add power attack and the cleave feats as soon as I can and a high starting Strength and this Cleric build is only slightly less then a Paladin in melee, but has way more spell casting.

Elf Sorcerer- (3rd option for melee and caster) I really love the sorcerer class in that they can be armed with a longsword and can sneak in and deal a finishing blow in melee comabt. Also, you need 2 casters if you ask me. Having 2 PCs that can both cast Fireball is amazing.

Elf Rogue- (Arrow slinger and scout) I pick the Elf over the Halfling for their abilities to Listen, Search, and Spot, and their skill with the longbow which is a great weapon in this game. Pick up the Precise Shot, Many Shot, Point Blank Shot, and Rapid Reload Feats and you have a killer in the shadows.

Human Wizard- (Main Caster) I have always liked the Wizard as the main caster in a party. The Sorcerer can do more things, but the Wizard is the best pure caster. Arm him with a crossbow and all is well.

Another starting five I liked but was a bit harder to play was:

Half-Orc Barbarian- Half-Elf Druid- Gnome Bard- Elf Rogue- Human Wizard

Longsword and Longbow skills come from being an Elf, not from sorcererness. Besides that, having two fireballists is amazingly sweet!

The next time I play, I'll definitely make an effort to purpose build a melee character with a long reach weapon (probably glaive) and whirlwind attack. Will take a bit of planning, but I really want to wind half a dozen opponents on one big whirl!
