SS:EE got a sweet source port update recently, but after the fancy new company logo animations and the opening cutscene play the game freezes before it even loads the main menu. Once it freezes it pops up a text box that says "ERROR!" and nothing else. The game closes when I close the error box.

I tried running the game as an administrator, watching the entire opening cutscene, restarting my computer, and even installing CCCP. I haven't tried reinstalling the game yet since I'm concerned about losing my progress, but I'm open to it since I've only reached level 2.

I attached a picture. Has this happened to you? How did you fix it?

see the FAQ.
I have the ERROR! right after the intro and game crashes to desktop. I've seen the faq. .NET, VC Redist up to date. Game path is shorter than 64 characters (C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\System Shock 2).

Are there any other suggestions???
pretty sure it's the 64 character limit - the path you've given is to your SS2 install.
Install the game into a different directory like C:\Games or the like. If installing through GOG Galaxy, change the installation directory in the same way. That should solve these crashing issues.

Oh god! didn't even realized that! You're right. Stupid me :)

Thank you! I copied my save files and transferred them when I reinstalled the game to a shorter directory. The game works fine now.
You're kidding me - The game crashes if the path is longer than 64 characters? Is this Amateur hour?

The *Default* path for this game is longer than 64 characters.
yes, it's a bug, those sometimes slip in - will be fixed in the next update. until then, you will just have to make sure your path is shorter than 64 characters.

this pretty much only affects people who have their game in program files, which is a terrible idea to begin with.

Does Galaxy install to C:/Program Files (x86)/ by default? I know the offline installers default to C:/GOG Games/.

Galaxy does, but the games themselves are installed to C://GoG Games or something similar. Then again, I may have set that up manually. It's been so long now I can't remember.

That's still kind of meh considering GOG galaxy practically installs it with a too long name by default...

Yep I'm having the exact same issue as you fine folks too, still haven't figured out a fix myself yet either. :(
