When I am trying to start Syberia 2 I get this message "3D rendering engine could not be initialized" I tried to lower my screen resolution but without successes. I am running on Windows Vista. Does anyone here have any ideas on what I could try to make this work?

I am having the same problem using Windows 7 ultimate with ATI Radeon HD 5670

Under win7 when using troubleshoot compatibility for game.exe (not syberia.exe) select the run 640x480 option, it will run and at a higher res than 640x480 actually. I think the game just doesn't like HD monitors.

800*600 is the game's default resolution, I think. It cannot be changed. Your graphics card just scales the image to fit the screen, your resolution shouldn't matter.

Try reinstalling the game in a folder other than Program Files. If that doesn't help, you could try running the game the way Elqui said. Make sure to use NT4 compatibility though.

Same problem here minus the error message. I found a workaround on the forum suggesting to lower the Windows desktop resolution before starting the game. I lowered my resolution from 2560x1600 to 1920x1200 and the game now works. I don't think you can change the resolution of the game itself though. I've got the Steam version of the game but this should work for you too.
Might be a bit late, but it runs well with DXWnd app (available on SourceForge), which allows to emulate older DirectX renderers, it helped me with Syberia 1

Worked with following settings for me (4K Display, Nvidia graphics)

Main tab:
Run in window: on

Video tab:
Limit resolution: 800x600

DirectX tab:
DirectX Version Hook: DirectX 7
Rendered: gdi
Filter: PIX 2x
Full bilinear filter: on (helped to fix glitches, probably caused by DPI resizing)
