This game has serious stability issues under everything newer than Windows 7. Just take look at the Steam forum for this game. I cant play my version more than a few minutes without crashing (Windows 10).

Is this issue solved with the GOG version?
I was just playing for about 30 minutes and had no issues.

Yeh I had the same question really.. then I found two things:

1. There's the 30 day money back guarantee from GOG..

and

2. There are some fixes floating around on the Steam forums, including an EXE file replacement fix, which apparently is a 3GB RAM limit type fix.

So I'm going ahead with a purchase and see if it plays ok tonight... it's 50% off.. so even if it's terrible.. I've not lost much but if crashing a lot, I'll ask for a refund.

I've been playing the game for a couple of hours on Win7 and it's running fine.
I use Win 10 and after some hours the game crashes. I think it is the old 3 GB ram bug.
I got greater stability on my original version by knocking the game to single CPU core and capping ram at 3GB - use MSCONFIG to do this - I have the GOG version but haven't tried it yet, but still have my notes on working with this game if I ever returned to it. And it is a great game.
I've noticed using certain trains causes instability with the game. It looks like the 4-8-4 Golden State engine seems to fall through the ground causing a crash.
My config: Win 10 with latest patches, i3 2-core with 3200 MHz, 8 Gb memory and gtx-740 with 2 Gb onboard.
I was able to solve the problem with the game crashing. You must run the game in compatibility mode with windows xp sp3. Just right-click on the game icon on the desktop and select "troubleshoot compatibility" and follow intsruction. Enjoy)
Win 10 Pro 64bit with latest updates
i5 3570K
8GB RAM
GeForce GTX660 with driver version 375.70

compatiblity mode Windows XP SP3

version displayed ingame 1.1.0.0(61414)

ingame settings:
Full HD fullscreen
everything set to minimum

Crashes both without and with process set to just one core in Task Manager.

I have this same problem
has anyone had issues with the 3GB RAM cap causing it to crash with more expansive games? I mean it's nice to have a stable exe but only for small/medium games or that it means it pretty much limits how much crap can be built before it crashes. There's patches to remove the RAM cap, and apparently suggestions here are about adding the memory limit to make it stable so I'm confused. It sucks that the best games are poorly adapting to modern O/S and hardware like this. Someone needs to create an XPBox or something like DOSBox that just works but for XP compatibility because windows compatibility mode is a waste of time that has yet to work for anything.

I have only played Single Player mode using the GoG version, not multi-player.
After completing a half-dozen scenarios, I've had very few problems. I discovered one problem that creates crashes, namely creating an over-complicated layout that includes "impossible" or "illegal" track configuration and then saving it. You may be able to continue playing for awhile afterwards, but eventually it crashes, and you can't reload the corrupted save file.
It's possible to recover to a previous (legal) save, but then you should avoid building the over-complicated or "illegal" track going forward.
Simplicity is better in track layout. See strategy guides in various online forums for track-building tips.

I've heard from other sources that the Steam version, and Steam mods, don't work well alongside or within the GoG install. If true, you could be encountering stability issues if you're mixing Gog and Steam code.

Once I got better at track building, I stopped having any stability issues. Good luck!
