This game has serious stability issues under everything newer than Windows 7. Just take look at the Steam forum for this game. I cant play my version more than a few minutes without crashing (Windows 10).

Is this issue solved with the GOG version?
I was just playing for about 30 minutes and had no issues.

Yeh I had the same question really.. then I found two things:

1. There's the 30 day money back guarantee from GOG..

and

2. There are some fixes floating around on the Steam forums, including an EXE file replacement fix, which apparently is a 3GB RAM limit type fix.

So I'm going ahead with a purchase and see if it plays ok tonight... it's 50% off.. so even if it's terrible.. I've not lost much but if crashing a lot, I'll ask for a refund.

I've been playing the game for a couple of hours on Win7 and it's running fine.
I use Win 10 and after some hours the game crashes. I think it is the old 3 GB ram bug.
I got greater stability on my original version by knocking the game to single CPU core and capping ram at 3GB - use MSCONFIG to do this - I have the GOG version but haven't tried it yet, but still have my notes on working with this game if I ever returned to it. And it is a great game.
I've noticed using certain trains causes instability with the game. It looks like the 4-8-4 Golden State engine seems to fall through the ground causing a crash.
My config: Win 10 with latest patches, i3 2-core with 3200 MHz, 8 Gb memory and gtx-740 with 2 Gb onboard.
I was able to solve the problem with the game crashing. You must run the game in compatibility mode with windows xp sp3. Just right-click on the game icon on the desktop and select "troubleshoot compatibility" and follow intsruction. Enjoy)
