I cannot get the game to start up. I get a "QFG5 has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. I have tried renaming my data folder to qgm.bak, I have reinstalled, I have installed quicktime and direct X, I have attempted to run as an administrator, I have added patches, I have tried running in all different compatibility modes, and I have even attempted to use the original install disk/hard copy of the game and encounter the same issue.

I am running Windows XP SP3. (Don't laugh, I'm broke lol)

PS - KQ8 and other games from that era work just fine.

Hi CalgaryChick!

As a first step, could you try using QFG5Patcher to launch the game if you don't mind?
https://qfg5.000webhostapp.com/QFG5Patcher.application

This is a tool I made and that i'm planning to keep evolving over time
When the game crashes due to a known problem, the tool will either suggest you a solution for it, or redirect you to a forum's thread giving a solution that worked for some people.

Please let us know the outcome.
if the tool says the crash is unknown, I can try to investigate with you through private messages, to prevent spamming this thread with back & forth :)
Cheers ^^

PS: more details about the tool below:
- https://www.gog.com/forum/quest_for_glory_series/qfg5_unofficial_wip_customize_your_game_experience_qfg5patcher_personnalisez_votr

It is important to mention that the tool as never been tested under Windows XP.
You might need to install some vcredists to get it to work

As for the game, in case the tool cannot run on winXP, the most common problem is that the executable’s ‘compatibility mode’ must be set to windows 98
However, the tool would again be helpful to solve the need to install the very old quicktime version that comes on the disk

Hey, thanks for that. I couldn't get the tool to work on XP
Thanks for the info! :)

I have started working hard on adding Windows XP support to the QFG5Patcher.
I'll let you know the outcome in a few days :)

Also, i've added you as a friend in case you want some help to investigate your QFG5 crash (but we should probably wait a few days to see if we have the chance to have the tool doing a part (or even all) of the work for us. :p
Hello again! :)

Very good news!
I was able to add FULL windows XP support to the tool.
It should therefore be fully functional as of version 1.0.1.14 available here:
https://qfg5.000webhostapp.com/setup.exe

Note, in order to provide maximum visibility:
QFG5Patcher.application is the QFG5Patcher tool. It has 2 Microsoft dependencies the users NEED to have installed for the tool to work:
- Windows Installer 4.5
- Microsoft .NET Framework 4 (x86 and x64) and Update for .NET Framework 4 (KB2468871)

setup.exe exists exactly to solve the dependencies problem automatically.
By running setup.exe, it will validate that you have installed the dependencies, otherwise it will download them from its vendor (Microsoft) and install them.

The QFG5Patcher will then be launched automatically without the need to launch QFG5Patcher.application

Let me know if you encounter any issue with the tool, so I can work on fixes :)

Also, since QFG5Patcher solved some QFG5 compatibility problems, please let us know the outcome when you launch the game from within the tool.

Thank you! :)

This is the message that I am getting....
---------------------------
Crash detected! - QFG5Patcher knowledge base

Unfortunately, this issue has no known solution. Please post a description of your problem in QFG5's forum of Steam or GOG, and make sure to include the following information (Ctrl+C on this messagebox works to copy its content):

Faulting application qfg5.exe, version 1.1.0.0, faulting module quicktime.qts, version 3.0.2.5, fault address 0x0031188e.

QFG5Patcher says your problem is caused by Quicktime
Now the answer is 'why'? :|

Can you try completely uninstalling your quicktime version for a test.
Once uninstalled, open the QFG5Patcher and click on the 'Compatibility fix' button.
Is the game still crashing on launch after that?
Or is Is it the same error, or a different one?

We should probably move to GOG private messages since we are friends
If we found the solution, we can then share it to the world in this thread :P

sent you a chat message
The solution has been found for this problem!

The solution:
---> Disable DirectDraw

1. Run 'dxdiag'.
2. Click on the 'Display' tab
3. Under 'DirectX features' section
- Disable the DirectDraw acceleration (if applicable)
4. (optional) Just to be 'safe', click on 'Compatibility fix' from within the QFG5Patcher. This will make sure a QFG5-compatible version of quicktime 3.0 is used by the game

The problem should now be fixed, QFG5 should launch (and play the quicktime videos) successfully!

Huge thanks to CalgaryChick for her time and dedication! :D
