I never played QfG2 (or 3) back in the day. Currently playing through the VGA remake and after a few days I must say there's not alot going on here and I've no big idea of what to do. I've only found three unique spots in the desert and since the game appears to be on time limit I'm worried I'll miss something important. Don't want to resort to a walkthrough either.

Would be really greatful for suggestions as to what to do and how to avoid dead ends (of which I'm sure there will be a few, although QfG was one of the better series when it came to that).

As I recall, there are 4 unique spots, though the fourth may only appear after some days. Don't want to spoil them here, but don't worry about them, even if you miss the 4th one, the game is still completable (I think you can even complete it without ever going to the desert, not really sure about that though). As for dead ends, you can't find yourself in one, especially if you have a save at the beginning of each day.
Should you have any more specific questions, do ask, though my knowledge is limited to the original, since I haven't played the remake yet.
-Make sure to buy a Saurus early on. You'll need it, it's only available for the first several days, and it'll help with desert exploration too.
-Don't focus all your exploration on the desert, there are actually only a few unique places out there, everything else is wastelands that are good only for finding things to fight. Explore the city too. Going to all the major plazas and checking out the stalls and shops at each one is a good place to start if you haven't already.
-Has anyone mentioned the Astrologer? I'm not sure there are all that many things pointing to him, but he's worth a visit.

Thanks, saving each day is a good idea indeed!
The game is timed in that the game ends on day 30, but you have less days than that to win. Certain events will happen on certain days, and believe me, the game will let you know. When those events occur you usually have something like 2 - 3 days to figure out how to respond. If you don't the game will end letting you know more or less what went wrong. Talk to everyone important every time an event pops up and they will give you help in a variety of ways.

Going into the desert and killing humanoids, or getting spell reagents from the bodies of critters is the best way to make money, but training with Uhura is the safest way to build your combat skills. If you're a mage make sure to talk to the other mages in the city, they'll let you in on a secret I believe. And other than one specific spell, it's best to practice your magic outside the city. Until you've maxed every skill you want to max, just spend your time training and getting money in between events.
It's about day 6 or so that things kick off...
The desert in the game goes on infinitely in both directions so don't stray too far either way. The important locations you should glean from talking to certain characters and can get directions for some of them too. The time limit isn't an issue since, assuming you don't spend the entirety of your time in the desert, you'll know right away when something's up and needs to be dealt with right away. And disposing of the problems at hand is fairly simple and you're given plenty of time to accomplish your task before the next event. Just don't forget to grab a map and compass early on to save a lot of hassle (not to mention it's the last opportunity you'll have to get them before the first major event happens).
what is a good way to raise stealth in the remake?

ive played the original a bunch of times and i never remember having trouble raising my stealth.

stealthing everywhere kills my stamina, so im constantly resting. am i carrying too much weight? should i alternate between stealth and run/walk? or should i just tough it out and keep stealthing everywhere? it is raising, albeit so slowly.

Stealth should not take stamina. You must be encumbered or dehydrated.

i thought the same! shouldnt be either... have 3 skins i keep full and my weight is, at most, 4000q out of 6300q. unless its like other games with Monk/Thief classes that need to stay at 25% or 50% of total carry weight...

every step of stealth is taking about 1 stamina! ive checked it VERY closely and know im only stealthing.

wonder what im missing.

oh, any idea to my question of best way to gain stealth? i just imported this char and in part one i had maxed stealth by day 2... im at day 7 in this game and have 150. maybe i AM doing fine and it sjust the comparison.

Does your character sleep, a full night's sleep, or are you fueling him with power naps and energy drinks? The remake is tweaked so your character needs to sleep several hours every day otherwise stamina drops faster the next day. You can't just fuel on stamina pills and resting nor fool the game by going to bed a couple minutes before sunrise to wake up fully rested. Since you're playing as a thief, I suggest you either stop your extralegal activities and go to bed at midnight unless you've got a job opportunity or sleep from midday to evening if the game has a "Sleep until evening" option.

As for improving Stealth, just sneak everywhere when you are in the city until it's high enough to avoid most battles in the desert. When it is, go in the desert, enter Stealth mode and quickly move back and forth in between two screens as avoiding encounter through stealth improves your skill slightly faster I believe. Plus, if you've got the right skills, timing, mind set and imagination, you can also improve your financial situation by sneaking in the desert.

I think this might be my problem! I have been waiting until AFTER midnight to go to sleep. guess they got wise to my lil' schemes!

i havent used any pills... but ill avoid trying to trick the game with those too!

and thats a good idea for stealth, ill go to the desert. i was trying the back and forth at the Palace and that did seem to raise the fastest, but was still very slow.

Thank you both for the help! much appreciated!
There's nothing wrong with stamina pills and power naps per se, they're are a good and time effective way to replenish stamina, but you cannot fuel strictly on that in the remake, you're got to sleep a normal human number of hours every day, otherwise every actions will drain stamina or more stamina the next day.

I think when the clock says "It's the middle of the night" (midnight) it's not too late to go to bed and wake up rested. But when it says "It's not yet dawn" or when the blue filter begins to fade out, it's definitely too late. So thieves can still work and hone their skills, and fighters can still hunt ghouls past midnight as long you're planning to reach your bed before "it's not yet dawn".

In addition to what others have said, there are at least 4 unique locations scattered about the streets (not counting the plazas and their shops) so some urban exploring is good. Also, some characters will refer to street names, so referring to the paper map may be necessary (IIRC this was sort of their version of copy protection).

The plot and the main quest unfold over the course of your stay in Shapeir. There's nobody to tell you "Are you The Hero? You must go there and kill the big bad". As you stay in Shapeir, new elements and clues appears and not before long, your goal in the game, the reason why Shapeir needed a hero becomes clear. Until then you're pretty much a tourist, getting some well deserved R&R after your work in Spielburg.

There are two tips I can give you to minimize your chances of getting irreversibly stuck in the game, other than saving every days on a different slot.

My first tip, you can't just talk with everyone about everything on your first day and expect to not have to speak with anyone for the rest of the game, most of the game takes place in the city, every new day brings its share of new events and these events gives you new topic to discuss (in the original), add new conversations options (in the remake) and even change existing conversations, for instance, asking the same person about rumors, weather and news will give you a different response every day. It's also possible to get different responses to some subjects when certain events happen.

Don't Panic! That doesn't mean you should talk with everyone about everything every day.

That means every morning be sure to visit the Katta's Tail Inn and ask Shameen and Shema what are the news today, again every morning, pay a visit to the various plazas, Keapon, Tarik, Aziza, the astrologer, Rakeesh and Uhura, to see if something new is happening today, and ask everyone about the topics relevant to today's events, even topics you've discussed before, and tell everyone of your discoveries too. Characters with questionable ethics would also be wise to visit you know who every mornings too and ask about job opportunities, even more so in the remake. By making this your morning routine, you'll be sure to never miss a single event in the game, thus eliminating your chance of getting irreversibly stuck because you missed something.

The second tip: Equip yourself, train your skills and stay at peak performance. Just because you don't have any precise goal yet, it doesn't mean you should rest on your laurels. Unlike the first game where you could train and tackle challenges at your leisure, you won't know what the next problem will be in Trial By Fire until it's happening. So everything you should do when nothing is happening is preparing yourself.

The game comes with a bunch of new tools for every trade, acquiring these tools should be your top priority. If you've played the first game, you should know by now what skills are important for your class, training these skills to peak performance is your second top priority, you never know when you'll need to dust off your skills. Training with Uhura and Rakeesh is also a good side investment if you're playing a non fighter class in the remake, but keep in mind that your class skills are more important. And as always, stock on pills, food and water, a thief should especially stock up on every possible tools of his trade.

TL;DR

Keep yourself informed on what's happening in the city and, at all time, be crazy prepared.
