I've been trying to play Sands of Time on steam and running into constant problems with the voices being inaudible. It seems to be an issue related to how it handles 3D positional audio because it's all based on where the camera is, but turning off all the 3D audio shit in the settings menu doesn't fix it. Googling it just results in a lot of threads of complaints, but no solutions.

My question is, does the GOG version share this issue? I searched the forum and didn't find any mention of it. I'd be happy to buy the GOG version if it has a fix for this problem.

I believe it is the same version as steam..Maybe the only different thing is that on gog it will probably work for windows 10. I have the gog version and I didn't experience any audio problems and my specs are
windows 7 64bit
fx-6300
8gb ram
gtx 970
So you didn't run into any issue where Farah's dialogue was so quiet that you could barely hear her? It's seemingly a pretty widespread problem with the steam version and with the PS3/360 ports.

Maybe it was even like this in the original release, I don't really remember, but I find it makes the game pretty frustrating coming back to it. Maybe I'll give the gog version a try and see if it works better.

Did you find out if the GOG versions suffers from the same issue? I've been on the fence to buy it just the see if it is the case.
Bought the game during the current 90 % sale. I can confirm that there are audio issues/lack of audio here as well, though it is not a consistent issue. The problem I am encountering is that only certain, but not all, of the narration and dialogue lines that are available in the original Xbox version are gone/inaudible. Other issues, such as the fog glitch which is appears in the Steam version, seem to be fixed however, so I guess these audio issues are a permanent flaw of the PC port or a problem with compatibility on modern hardware.

Same. Whelp.
This fix may help to solve/alleviate the audio issue:

1. Right-Click on the volume icon in the taskbar.

2. Click on Playback devices.

3. Double-click on Speakers.

4. Go to Enhancements tab, check Loudness Equalization and click OK.

5. Adjust the volume in the game sound settings.

These are my in-game audio settings: BGM volume = 40%, Voices volume = 100%, SFX volume = 20%.

*It helped me to improve the situation. Maybe it's not the definitive fix, but I hope that can be useful to someone.
Can confirm that some of the non-cutscene conversations with Farah (cutscenes are completely fine) have this problem that seems related to positional audio. In some locations it was normal and in others, I had to blast my speakers nearly full volume to be able to hear it. Unlikely to ever get fixed though...
