Stig79: 1. No it was not problematic at all. The game didn't let you import a world-state so the game offers a canon ending that BG2 uses. Viconia tells you she spent her time living on a farm near Beregost. She eventually killed the farmers and fled to Amn. Given that SoD ends a few weeks before BG2 starts....

2. No his reasons are crystal clear. You find his journal in BG2. He has been planning to steal YOUR soul for years.Trying to get you executed just ends up being completely moronic. Given that it is the main plot of BG2, this is a gigantic plot-hole.

3. Yes they are different. The lead writer even said so herself that she wanted to give them new personalities. Safana was nothing but a sex-object, and Jaheira was nothing but a "nagging wife". This, according to her, made them "poor representations of women".

Here is the exact quote from her “If there was something for the original Baldur’s Gate that just doesn’t mesh for modern day gamers like the sexism, [we tried to address that],” said writer Amber Scott. “In the original there’s a lot of jokes at women’s expense. Or if not a lot, there’s a couple, like Safana was just a sex object in BG 1, and Jaheira was the nagging wife and that was played for comedy. We were able to say like, ‘No, that’s not really the kind of story we want to make.’ In Siege of Dragonspear, Safana gets her own little storyline, she got a way better personality upgrade. If people don’t like that, then too bad.”

Basically she sees it as her duty to "fix" the sexism in the original game. Keeping the expansion in tune with the rest of the games doesn't even factor in. That is how you mess up a story.

4. No. Irenicus is doing it in SoD. Because the writer thought it was he who did it in BG2 as well. This is what happens when you let a social activist get full freedom of writing the middle chapter in a much loved franchise with complex characters.
1. As I said, it's a valid criticism, I'm not defending their continuity errors.

2. I'm sorry but there's nothing on his diaries about planing to steal your soul for years. Look for yourself, here's the full text:
http://baldursgate.wikia.com/wiki/First_Journal_of_Jon_Irenicus
http://baldursgate.wikia.com/wiki/Second_Journal_of_Jon_Irenicus

I watched a YouTube video to refresh my memory on the ending of SoD, when Irenicus frames you he says nothing about you going to be executed, so that's not what he wants. He appears again when you are in jail and he say these final words before leaving: "You will escape this place. We will meet again. Fear the meeting, child of Bhaal. We have so far to go together". Those are not the words of someone who wanted you executed. This is not a plot-hole. You just underestimated Irenicus plan all along, same way as Charname did. :) The way I see it, he just didn't want you to remain as the Hero of Baldur's Gate, so he framed you to make people hate you, so you wouldn't be missed when he captured you.

3. Well, I can only speak from my experience; Jaheira didn't act out of character as far as I'm concerned and I didn't play with Safana so I don't know about her changes. If others think Safana is acting out of character, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. And if they say Jaheira is acting out of character, well, I didn't notice it. Was it because Khalid wasn't in my party? Was it because I didn't get some banter others did? I don't know. I can only say I didn't notice anything wrong with her.

4. If the writer indeed made that mistake, well, then that's a significant plot-hole. Is this something the writer or anyone in the knows said (meaning, can you provide a quote?) or just your opinion?

As for the social activist thing, that's a ridiculous thing to say, it's irrelevant to the argument and makes me suspicious of your reasons for your criticism of SoD.

2. Might have been via dialogue and not via the Diary you find then. I am remembering the source of that information wrong. He does say it in the game somehow. If you look at his huge lab in the beginning of BG2, and all the alliances he has made it is clear that he isn't improvising.

3. http://kotaku.com/the-struggle-to-bring-back-baldur-s-gate-after-17-years-1768303595 Safana and Jaheira got changed because she felt they were poor representations of women. And jokes at women's expense in the original game = bad. I saw more jokes aimed at men's expense in those games, though. And I wouldn't say any of the male companions were good representatives of men. Most of them were psychotic, really.

This is worse than those "enhancements" made to certain Lucas films. If someone can't write to the original characters and fitting with the original themes/plots/etc., then don't be a writer.

Also not sure why she felt the need to reflect the "real world" in a game that IS NOT about the real world.

She also stuffed a trans person into it because "progressive". A token character really. Which makes no sense, since transgendered people in the Forgotten Realms has always been a non-issue. They don't have the same stuff to deal with as in the US and other places. In fact a character can permanently change his\her gender to the gender of their choice via spells or magical items. She got a lot of stick from transgendered players from that one.

LOL that's brilliant how it backfired on her.

It's possible the Beamdog didn't touch the plot or characters for PSTEE. If so then I guess they won't change much else, except maybe UI and other minor fixes - and then charge way too much for it.

On the plus side I'm now in the mood to re-play this game one way or the other, so if the EE is nothing special (or worse) then back to the original I go...

I guess they will mess up the sprites for PT EE. They did that with the recent patches of BG 1 and 2. They look cartoony now and don't fit well with the backgrounds at all anymore.

Well some screenshots are up, together with a release date of April 11th: https://www.beamdog.com/products/planescape-torment-enhanced-edition

The characters do do look a bit... different... in the screenshots. They do stand out from the background more, in a way that suggests they don't quite fit.

It looks like they've fixed the UI though - not sure if they've added a zoom in/zoom out feature, but if they did that would be good to have.

It's possible that the new version is more stable, and possibly recommended for people who don't have this yet. For anyone who already has it, it's probably better to stick to the original with unofficial patches.

Yeah they don't mix with the backgrounds at all.

The UI is fixed\changed. And the zoom feature isn't a bad feature at all. That bit is a good thing.

The new version might be more stable. I am guessing it will be, actually.

I'm not sure about the zoom - did the other EEs have it? If so then it's safe to say it's included. I thought it might be there because one of the screenshots looked zoomed in to me.

Also this bit here (from that page) gives me some hope they haven't totally screwed it up:

Enhanced Planescape: Chris Avellone, Lead Designer on Planescape Torment, has partnered with Beamdog to curate gameplay updates, bug fixes, and enhancements to best capture his original vision for the game.

So who knows - maybe it IS truly enhanced in the way it was always meant to be?

I think I can live with the characters looking a bit odd, if that's the case.

Remember this was the company that turned Minsc into a GamerGate attack. And they also changed Jaheira and Safana because the characters were "sexist". It is a shit company. They begged people to write great reviews for them when it all backfired.

Yeah what I've heard about their other EEs (both here and on other forums) doesn't fill me with confidence.

However, there's a chance they learnt from their mistakes, and if they brought Chris Avellone on board and gave him enough oversight/control then it might still turn out for the better, since I doubt Chris would put up with SJW crap just for the sake of it. Besides, P:ST had a brothel for intellectual stimulus run by a chaste succubus, not to mention other complex characters, so there's even less perceived need for SJW influence here than in BGII.

Guess we'll have to wait and see what it's like when it's finally released. Until then I'm willing to give Beamdog the benefit of the doubt - warily of course, given their past deeds.

They are not adding a single word to the story or dialogue. It won't have any kind of SJW stuff in it. Not unless they add some new companion to the game later, but it doesn't seem like they will do that this time.

That's the first thing I thought when I read this thread. "Boy, I sure wish there was an enhanced edition for this! Let's talk about how much we want an enhanced edition!" Two weeks later...
