If you want to give multiplayer NWN a try, you should definitely try out Higher Ground Path of Ascension: CEP Legends. In short: HG

HG is an action packed party play module that provides great, awesome and very interesting challenges.

you can find instructions on how to get started in the wiki that accompanies HG: http://wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/Getting_Started (I can really recommend ARF2 for automated downloads and connecting to the servers)

if you take a look at this page on the vault, you see that HG is one of the most popular NWN gameworlds out there.

The community is still active and the developer team is still working on improving balance and adding new awesome stuff. The server has been up and running since 2004 at least, perhaps even before that.

So, what makes it so great?

-party play: most areas are designed with a party in mind, which is definitely not a bad thing. good teamplay makes for a lot of fun and can greatly decrease the difficulty of some areas (some areas are really, really tough)...

-interesting monsters: nearly all monsters have some form of special attack; every character has it's weakness and there's always a monster that exploits that very fact. of course, every foe also has it's soft spot... and you are fully able to make use of that

-Legendary Levels 40-60: your character doesn't stop gaining power at level 40. A full 20 levels have be added, providing new feats, higher skill ranks, additional Ability increases, improved casterlevels, hipoints, attack bonuses etc; everything you would expect from a new tier of levels.

-Subraces: I forgot the count, but there are close to 80 subraces you can choose for your characters. These range from Open subraces (available to anyone) like Drow, Troll and Arctic Dwarf, to Secret (you will need to complete a quest to obtain these) like Pixie, Illithid and Minotaur, to UltraRare (found in Legendary Level areas) like Treant, Doppleganger and Fallen Angel, to BeyondUltraRare (found only in the hardest areas) like Wemic, Brownie and Maelephant.

-HGEnhanced: if you want the full experience, you should download a completely optional hakpak that allows you to pick up new feats (Greater Weapon Focus, Extra Spell Known) and spells (Disintegrate, Polar Ray), see additional visual effects and the modified descriptions of items and spells. In the future, even new base or prestige classes might be added.

-class customisations and quasiclasses: become a large-sized Half Dragon at 30 levels of Dragon Disciple (not necessarily Red!), gain additional attacks with a quarterstaff as a high level Monk, choose from over 30 shapes as a Shifter, use called shot on your enemies as a Ranger to instantly slay them, inflict Mortal Strikes as an Assassin or use Shadow Step as a Shadow Dancer to instantly jump to a nearby creature; crush your enemies using an enchanted staff as a Staffmaster (wizard/weaponmaster), cast both divine and arcane spells as a Theurge (cleric/wizard), become a hulking abomination of rock and stone as an Accursed Pariah (barbarian/sorcerer) or unleash fiery doom as a Bloodfire Mage (sorcerer/red dragon disciple).

-spell customisations and epic spells: cast the cleric epic spell Miracle, resurrecting the entire party and temporarily dazing all your foes; teleport yourself across the map using a modified Gate spell as a wizard or sorcerer; reduce your enemies to quivering jelly using Greater Ruin; increase your movement speed by casting expeditious retreat and freedom of movement (both stack with haste!); summon a massive wall to keep your enemies away from the party using the arcane epic Transmute Barrier.

-feat customistations and legendary feats: obtain Legendary Spell Penetration, Legendary Weapon Focus and Legendary Skill Affinity (grants a skill as a class skill, but requires a level 1 feat) among others. Increase your critical threat range and multiplier using Overwhelming and Devastating Critical, increase your base movement speed by picking up Blinding Speed.

-skill customisations: increase your attack and defense by putting ranks in craft weapon and armor, raise listen to become more adapt at fighting concealed enemies, use bluff to lower your targets attack bonus, reduce the damage you take from critical hits by putting ranks in parry.

-random loot: with the exception of items from an area specific set, items are randomised, allowing for increased (or decreased), added (or removed) properties; randomized items can be augmented to further improve their quality to suit your character's perfect gear set-up.

-building: a badly built character will not be fun to play in the hardest areas of the module (though player skill can make up to that for a bit). but do not despair if you are not into building! a lot of players post their builds, receiving criticism from the community, allowing them to improve their characters and you to try them out by yourself. new players are advised to follow the detailed Open Subrace builds, specifically designed for new players.

-huge amount of areas to visit

there's probably quite a few things I forgot to mention, but I think I succeeded at painting the general picture.

I started playing NwN when it first came out. I've played on a lot of different servers over the years. After taking a 2 year break from the game I dug out my cd's and reinstalled NwN got up to date and found Higher Ground. I dropped in because I wanted a place that offered subraces other than what was available in the core game. Well, was I ever surprised at how many choices there were! I made my first character using an subrace available to any player and started leveling up.

What I love about Higher Ground is that you don't have to do the "lowbie quest grind" like you find in other MMORPG's. I don't have to go out and collect 800 items for some xp. The pre-immortal tag system makes leveling up quick and fun. You're not grinding away in one area for ages. You're always moving around going to new areas of the mod in search of the next tag. Each tag offers special benefits to the player and when all the tags are acquired you get another bonus for collecting them all.

Add in everything that MightyKhan has already mentioned and you can see why I haven't left Higher ground in 3 years. Grab the game, get the updates and meet us on Higher Ground you won't be sorry!
I'll echo the previous posts.

I played NWN single player and, because I liked the game, I decided to check out multiplayer options. I had never done that before, but was amazed about what I found.

Higher Ground has captured (and kept) my interest for over 5 years now. That's about 20 times longer than any game I had previously played.

In part, that's because of the reasons given by th OP (although there are many more specifics along these lines that could be added). But, two other key factors have kept me interested and involved.

First is the community of players. The server was set up to encourage party play (e.g., additional xp and loot for party play). That has led the community to be helpful, fair and welcoming. New players are assisted and encouraged; in fact a few guilds of players focus specifically at helping new players. There is virtually no griefing, pking or other PvP.

Second, the dev team simply doesn't stop. They continually come out with new challenges that keep the server fresh. New areas come out frequently, each with their own unique monsters, loot and story lines, and each requires a different set of tactics. New subraces, quasi-classes, spells, etc. keep being produced, as well.

Buy the game and come to Higher Ground. Oh, and by the way, HG is FREE! See you there!
Thanks for the post, but I'm not really sure how to use all of the server's resources. I have downloaded ARF2 and used it to download CEP, but I'm not sure if I have downloaded the HGEnhanced thing. Does ARF2 has the option to download HGEnhanced or do I need to download it separately?

I'm asking because it's the first time I try to use multiplayer, but I'm kind of all confused with the servers things to download.
ARF2 should download everything you need to join the server. If you join a server and type the !enhmode command in your chat bar, it should tell you whether or not you have HG Enhanced (by enabling it, if installed).

Alston: Thanks for the post, but I'm not really sure how to use all of the server's resources. I have downloaded ARF2 and used it to download CEP, but I'm not sure if I have downloaded the HGEnhanced thing. Does ARF2 has the option to download HGEnhanced or do I need to download it separately?

Yes, ARF2 can help you with that.
If you click "Show Update Dialog" from the top right drop-down menu (Update, next to ?), you will ultimately get a window, titled "Update Options".
Check the boxes for the stuff you would like to download. Doing this will also inform you whether your files are up to date or not.
Also, if the "Log" window shows an entry "Found HGE standard" (or whatever version you chose to use), you should be OK.

Be sure to check http://wiki.hgweb.org/wiki/HG_Enhanced just in case. ARF2 should take care of most of the hassle, but it's always good to read how it's done without such a tool :)

And as Mattoco mentioned, you probably want to try the critical rebuild patch as well, though it might well be possible that ARF2 downloads that too, since the names of the two files (the one from the bioware site and the one ARF2 downloaded) are identical. I will check later whether it's just the names or the files themselves.

I hope it works out for you and that you will enjoy the server!

Cheers,
MightyKhan

(Also, if you have any specific feedback on what was not clear about getting and installing the files needed to play HG, you should make a forum account at http://highergroundpoa.proboards.com/index.cgi and start a topic in The Drunken Monk Tavern. Actually, you should make a forum account anyway and introduce yourself to the community in that same section. :) )

edit:
the following update just came out:
UPDATE 2010-11-11
=================
-The !list acc prell command is now sorted by level cap rather than alphabetically. For an alphabetically sorted list, refer to the Accomplishments page on the Wiki.
-Lowbie tasks are here! Lowbie tasks are offered by NPCs in two new areas in the docks, the Silver Moon Inn and the Sooty Crow. They're designed to offer additional xp, gold, and items for completing tasks in various areas of the server, and to help orient newer players to the server. --Tasks aren't like tags or accomplishments, and offer no additional benefits past gold, xp, and items.
--Tasks are not designed with completing all of them in one playthrough in mind. They're just extra flavor and story. It will probably not be convenient to complete more than one or two in a given playthrough unless you make extra effort, since their goals are spread throughout the level 1-40 areas.
--You can choose to pass up a given task or task in a task giver's chain in order to choose a later one more appropriate to your level.
--Taskgivers have between 8 and 12 tasks each. Their tasks are generally spread out fairly evenly over areas of levels ranges between 1 and 40. That is to say, the first task will be suitable for a low-level character, while the last will be for around levels 35-40.

As MK mentioned, we just dropped a big update featuring a slew of new quests aimed at new players to the server to help introduce them to the world and some of its mechanics. Not sure Higher Ground is the place for you?

Do you enjoy...
-Not having to pay to play a game online?
-Hack-and-slash gameplay, where you can pay as much or as little attention to the underlying story as you care for?
-An active and helpful community of players and developers to make your game experience the best it can be?
-A well-balanced and detailed game world to escape into?
-Some of the most exotic locales in Forgotten Realms lore such as the Nine Hells, the Abyss, Elysium, and the Far Realm, along with old mainstays of Toril and the Underdark?
-Being challenged, in both the creation of your character and the manner in which you play it, to risk your characters' lives (in the case of the <span class="podkreslenie">Hardcore</span> game mode, quite literally) against the deadliest foes the multiverse has to offer?
-Having some say in how the world, in which you spend countless hours playing, develops and evolves through your feedback and suggestions?

Then you should see what <span class="podkreslenie">Higher Ground</span> has to offer!

Don't own a copy of Neverwinter Nights? Check out our <span class="podkreslenie">Installation Guide</span> to get the resources you need (with special instructions to bring the GOG version up to speed)!

Visit the <span class="podkreslenie">forums</span> to connect with the community and see more!
Starting sometime on Thursday, Higher Ground will be having a bonus XP weekend; a great opportunity to get introduced to the server or make some good headway with a character you may already have!

Look for a module build date around 11-25-10, seen in your combat log when you log in, to know if the event is active; a build date around 11-29-10 will signal the end of the bonus XP weekend.

Not sure how to log on? Check out the Getting Started</span> guide!

Since it's thanksgiving in the US, this weekend (Nov. 25-29) will be a bonus XP weekend!

A great opportunity to start a new character.
Again echoing all the sentiments and posts that have gone before and to repeat them.

The Dev team on the server are one terrific bunch of hard working guy. Who through thier hard work on updates keep this wonderful server a very enjoyable, fun and interestiing place to be. On a side note it must be cause i have been playing on HG for well over 7 years and made one hell of a lot of very good friends.

The community always willing to to help and if they dont know the answer to a question cna put u in touch with someone who can. they are also a fun bunch of and girls to be around,

Have in my time played countless games and plenty of them online but never has one held my interest so much as Higher Ground POA has

As Khan says this weekend is the perfect time to with a bonus XP weekend starting tomorrow 25th of November so come on along and give it try

Blass
Just wanted to add my recommendation for Higher Ground. I started playing here over 4 years ago and haven't left. I have tried other servers but after playing on HG nothing compares.

Some of the things I enjoy are the great friends I have met, the diversity of classes and sub-races, the challenge of the different areas available and the continual hard work the developers put into the server.

Come roll a toon on HG and help make HG even better:)
Sounds good. I think I'll try this sometime.
Ur server drop me after i choice a hero.
is this server still active? That ARF2 auto updater/installer thing sounds extremely useful for new players... wow!

auto updater hasn't worked for a long time like before the servers went away lol, you either need the critical rebuild or a version that is already at 1.69.

im haveing trouble with my new keys after the auto system. i cant connect to Karlindale or the server mentioned here, karlindale tells me i was booted, which i think is an authentication problem too. on this server it just tells me i have a bad cd key...i can get on other servers...and i have gotten the other set of keys from GoG any help would be appreciated
