It won't even go to loading screen, it immediately crashes (at least NWN 1 would get me to loading screen before crashing my computer)

1) My comp meets the game spec requirements
2) I run it in administrator mode
3) I run it in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service pack 2
4) I've installed DirectX 9
5) Updated all drivers and graphics cards
6) Fully patched and updated game


Any solutions? I really want to play the game again but GoG isn't responding to my emails/not giving me a solution.

Which version of the game do you have? If you have the GOG version, you should NOT patch it; it does not need it, and may be your problem.

Other solutions may be your antivirus is interfering with execution - disable it temporarily. Or you may be having difficulties if you installed the game to Program Files. If so, uninstall and reinstall outside of Program Files, somewhere like C:\Games\ .

Reinstalled without patches, still doesn't work unfortunately :/

Do you have Windows' Data Execution Prevention switched on? To check, go to Control Panel >> System and Security >> System >> System Protection >> Advanced >> Performance >> Data Execution Prevention. You can choose to have DEP for essential Windows programs only (I believe this is default), or for all programs, with selected exceptions. If your setting is the second one, then you will need to add NWN2, or switch to the first.

Edit: Another thing to check, is to make sure the installer created a folder called 'Neverwinter Nights 2' inside your Documents folder, and that it created a nwn2.ini in that folder.

Doesn't the default GOG folder go into Programs? If so, as Hickory noted, reinstall outside Programs or Program(x86). So you'll have to do a custom install, not the default GOG installer-selected location.

Just hit me the old renaming trick might do it here.
Just find the "nwnmain.exe" and rename it to something else, like "nwngame.exe".
That clears up some weird thing that might cause an immediate crash.

As far as I remember, gog installer doesn't install into program files,
but rather C:/gog_games/ or something like that, so that's probably not it.

It really isn't...;) Just make a habit out of installing *all* your games into a folder other than c:\programs(x86) or c:\programs. If C:\ is your only drive partition then you might want to create a folder called "GoG Games", for instance, and install all your Gog games inside that folder. But best practice is to set up multiple partitions and only install your games to partitions other than C:\. My games get installed to D:\, E:\ and F:\, D:\ being a separate 1TB drive and E:\ and F:\ being two partitions in a RAID 0 drive consisting of two ~500GB hard drives (for another TB.) The logic behind multiple partitions is simply that if one drive/partition goes down it doesn't take everything else down with it--as would be the case with a problem in a single-drive system with only a C:\ partition. Even if you have but a single hard drive, it is still best practice to partition it into at least two partitions, imo.

My C:\ partition is on yet another separate 320GB drive and is where I install the OS, hardware drivers and utilities of various kinds. It's about half-full at the moment. Just some suggestions to consider for future reference...

That's not necessary. I just recently installed the game on Windows 7 64 bit without having to make any changes to the DEP exception list for it. So far the game has been playing flawlessly, not a single crash yet. I noticed also that it already has the Large Memory Address flag enabled so it will be able to use up to 4 gig of RAM.

Because your DEP is set up that way does not mean that everybody's is. Many administrators will want tighter security and enable for all programs. It's not the game that sets DEP. I suggest that you don't make assumptions.

I'm not making assumptions, I'm stating a fact. I had to set up DEP to include all programs because of the Baldur's Gate EE games, and I didn't have to add NWN2 to the exception list, as you so quite clearly stated was necessary. You are the one who is obviously making an assumption, and incorrect one at that.

Yes, you are making assumptions, and no I am not. You stated quite categorically: "That's not necessary." Unless, and until, you know the OP's system intimately, you cannot make a statement like that. I too have Win7 74 bit, and I own all of the Baldur's Gates, EE included, and I have never had to make such a change.

It's a known issue with the Steam version, Beamdog has it listed on their support site. And Neverwinter Nights 2 is not effected by making the change from default settings, it runs just fine without adding it to the list. So no, it's not necessary, and yes it is a fact as my own setup has shown.

There you go with your assumptions again. The OP is using the GOG version, and your assertion would still be incorrect if he/she wasn't, because you do not know their system setup.
