Leroux: Do you mean Knights of the Chalice, by chance? That would be a party-based RPG though (and IIRC you're rather detached from your characters).
No, the graphics are not as I remember.
The main I thing I remember that they used a system like D&D, but covered by GNU or similar. The article I read was mainly about this and how the devs incorporated it and similar. But the graphics did definitely (at least as far as I remember :D ) look far more modern.

Problem is, I don't even remember if I read this thing online or in a paper magazine, in English or German :D
So quit a bit to cover :D

This article was also about IIRC that the devs were struggling with Wizards of coast, despite the fact that they did use this free version. One thing I am fairly sure about this alternative was covered by GNU and not open game License.

again AFAIR it was mainly about the D20 system, which in now way is really owned by Wizard as D20 dices did exist prior. Even I remember using them faaaar before ;)

And according to this:
https://www.awesomedice.com/blog/253/history-of-dice-2/

D20 is definitely not longer under any copyright or whatsoever (300 BCE) :D

But even this did not even help me find this alternative. :(

Edit: no bloody idea why one link is working and the other one isn't.....GOG aaaarg ;)

darthvictorbr: Note : NWN1, not NWN2.

I personally like nwn1 since you control/role play a character, you can give orders to your merc, can use summons, but you can't take control of another party characters and that make the game more immersive. I feel more like "i an my character".
Fallout and Fallout 2. You have companions but only very limited control of what they do. Ian shooting you in the back is infamous in Fallout. Fallout 2 increased indirect control of companions; as such, they were much more useful.

You can find more comments on Fallout companions in the comments section of this post: https://lilura1.blogspot.com/2017/03/Underrail.html
Sorry for casting animate dead in my own thread but i wanna would like to thank people who recommended Arcanum. Is amazing. I din't added to my top 5/10 list since i still playing my first playthrough, but the idea of a traditional "fantasy world" under a industrial revolution was AMAZING and very good executed... I got some problems in win7, but found the solution, add -no3d -doublebuffer

I generally found magic much more interesting in video games. I mean, a fireball vs a blade... now is a fireball vs a grenade launcher, the "caster" don't need material but magic exhaust you. I will probably spend a lot of times trying multiple playthrough. You can play solo or in group and your companions heal, are relative smart...

Is probably the closest thing to nwn1. Thanks everybody.

I didn't notice Divinity: Original Sin 2 listed anywhere here. That game is the closest thing to a proper D&D game like NWN that I have seen - it's also absolutely amazing. Had a level editor, GM mode, mods and all of that too.
In Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate you can have a party, and assign scripts for the NPCs in the party. This way you can concentrate ib playing only with your character, the rest of the party would act automatically as in NWN.

There are several scripts provided with these games, and (if you are into this) I think you could also write your own scripts.
There is nothing like NWN :-)

I've been reading gaming and MMORPG online news for 15 years and still nothing even comes close.

I don't expect anything good in a MMO. The unique good(not nothing close to a single player good RPG like Arcanum or nwn1) is age of conan
Truthfully, I don't know how similar this is because I'm still working on NWN2, but there is the NWN MMO. I think that the MMO has the potential to be good because of my positive experience playing the Star Wars MMO (the only MMO I've played) so if you can't get enough of the NWN world itself and not just the gameplay that could be the way to go.

If you are talking about Neverwinter , then my personal opinion is that it was a terrible representation of D&D. I played it. Became level 60 in a single day. After 1 hour, I would simply click on quests without even reading them since they were all same boring things.

If you want an MMO that is really good D&D, I can wholeheartedly suggest Dungeons And Dragons Online Only downside is that it does not have PvP but fun as hell. The quests are actually entertaining and there is some "dungeon" feel to it.

That's good to know! Thanks for telling me.

Sorry, but i can`t enjoy DDO. There are many problems, but only to name 2.

1 - HP inflation.

In nwn a Iron Golem have 99 HP in NwN ( http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_golem ), a Great wyvern, 132
( http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Great_wyvern ), a Ogre Berserker, 76 ( http://nwn.wikia.com/wiki/Ogre_berserker ), in DDO i have played until lv 11. Some times i need to spam the same fireball 20+ times to destroy a golem, so a golem probably have dozens of HP compared to nwn1.

Magic/Arrow/Slash `sponge` enemies aren`t hard. Look to a beholder, is a terrifying enemy in PnP, not because you need 50 rounds to kill a beholder. Is hard due his abilities.

2 - Too repetitive

You apparently need to do dozens of times the same quest to level up.

But lets be honest, compared to other MMO, DDO still a good recommendation
