tfishell: GOG is not going to remove the game from their store no matter how much you may want them to. It is up to 2K to re-negotiate the music rights, and obviously they don't want to for reasons between them and music companies. I do not think the hosted music will be affected nor will any anti-music patches happen.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: I'd argue it's also up to 2k and GOG not to take unethical actions, which releasing a butchered version of the Mafia game is, because it's committing desecration against the art.
I disagree this was a desecration of art, but I don't think it's worth arguing over seeing as we just don't see eye-to-eye on this matter. We'll just have to agree to disagree.

I'm wondering: what action are you going to take on this matter, aside from just posting about it on the forums? Surely you have something planned given how angry or at least frustrated you seem over this, based on your posts.

I would suggest you make your case in a new forum thread on the main forum. Make a solid lengthy post why you are disgusted with GOG and why this is a desecration of art (for everyone to see, not just me).

BTW I did make a wish for those who wanted a voice in the wishlist: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/mafia_1s_licensed_music

marcinshaq: ///First part of this tutorial is for people who already have the original installed on their PC, and second is for people who don't.///

///Steam and original disc versions///

1. First, install Mafia from your disc or go to the directory where you installed your Steam version of the game and download the MafiaDataXtractor from here: https://mafiamods.com/mods/mafia-data-xtractor-modding-tool/

2.
Next, extract the DataXtractor and copy MafiaDataXtractor.exe to the root of Mafia directory where Game.exe is located (Ex. C:\ProgramFiles\Mafia\ or C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\steamapps\Mafia\)

3.
Launch MafiaDataXtractor.exe and select ab.dta - Music from the list. Wait for the program to extract .ogg's

4. Now that extracting is done, you should see a new folder called 'SOUNDS'. Copy the whole thing to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'.

All done!

----------------------------------------------------------

///For those who don't have the original disc or the Steam version installed///

1. Install Mafia from GOG.

2. Download this package: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B31JvzIJcaxMRGFjWWxsQ0ZjTFU/view?usp=sharing

3. Extract it and copy the 'SOUNDS' folder to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask you if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'.

Enjoy!

Too many people downloaded this file and it is blocked for a few hours. Use MEGA mirror on the first page.
They also exchanged some music in the sounds folder with static noise... here are the complete files: Original Music.rar

Ah, totally overlooked those files. Guess we need an updated package in OP. Thanks for pointing that out!

I agree.
I never played Mafia before, but always intended to do so. I just picked this up on GOG.com, so now I'm glad I can play the game the way it was designed. :)

Thanks so much, marcinshaq, for confirming and detailing this method of getting the original soundtrack in the game, and thanks, mwnn, for the Mega mirror too. :D

Gotta disagree with you there.

First of all, "desecration against the art" is kind of a silly argument, because it is based on the idea that art is "sacred" and thus untouchable. As with everything art-related, that's dependent on the viewer's thoughts and some will agree with your view, some will not and no one can tell the other side is wrong about it.

But ignoring the purist artistic view on this matter, let's face why this game lost its music. Simply put, it's because of the stupid way copyright laws work. You can thank your beloved RIAA for what happened to this game. 2k is kind of guilty as well because when they licensed that music they either chose to pay a smidge less for a temporary license, (hooray for next-quarter short-sightedness) or their lawyers were dumb enough to accept a contract that specified that the license would be limited to X years. Which was eventually enforced when the time expired.

Now we come to the present. There's a negotiation between GOG and 2k. 2k could make a new deal with the RIAA for the music again, hopefully permanent this time. But let's be honest: how much do you think they'll get from this reselling? Lawyer time is expensive. If they had to do that I'm pretty sure 2k would say "screw it, that will cost more than we'll get in return". Can't fault their reasoning. And BTW none of this was GOG's fault or an "unethical" action.

So now GOG and 2k can choose to either:
a) not release the game because it'll offend your purist views, be damned anyone who wants it despite this issue;
b) release it in the state it currently is.

As long as I can mod the music back in, I'm pretty sure what I want them to do.

Here's a list of files that have been altered in the GOG release of MAFIA:
https://pastebin.com/cm489NEb

METHOD 1 - English version - Copy original files from discs

> Delete the SOUNDS folder from C:\GOG GAMES\MAFIA
> Download the following archive from MEGA or GOOGLE DRIVE:
https://mega.nz/#!ilYHFI5I!TBkB0e05WxvkO4-_BtVZJkuuNoNIGF8Ac5vpVP3EtMw
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bx_3QB-krnyDMTFQbDFYaFNRb2M/view?usp=sharing

> Extract into your installation folder i.e. C:\GOG GAMES\MAFIA
It's another self extracting 7zip archive. I've included A0.DTA (Sound FX) and AB.DTA (Music)
http://www.kamalook.de/Mafia/DTA.html

METHOD 2 - Should be Multi-lingual - Replace just affected music tracks with corrected ripped music tracks
Thanks to andreasmaureder for posting this

Foreign speakers will want to use just the corrected music tracks:
http://www93.zippyshare.com/v/R4HPmjMg/file.html

> Extract the archive.
> Copy the extracted SOUNDS folder over the existing SOUNDS folder in the MAFIA folder.
> English users can use this too if they wish.

Huh, strange. I never knew Google Drive did that. Interesting. Someone posted a link to MEGA though :)
Well spotted; I assumed they'd only meddled with the files in the Music folder so I've been caught out by this also.
Wow, this is very interesting. @mwnn if you don't mind, I'll replace my GDrive link in my post with the MEGA you posted and make a backup...just in case.

Perfectly fine =D
Tried the solution from the post on the previous page that contains the MEGA link but there doesn't seem to be any menu music.

Weird - I can't replicate any problem.

Just tested it now with a fresh install of the game.

Using the latest offline installer: setup_mafia_1.3_(15708).exe

Deleted the SOUNDS folder

Extracted the archive into C:\GOG GAMES\MAFIA

As in the attached picture.

If those two DTA files aren't in the right location and/or missing then I do get complete silence after deleting the SOUNDS folder.

Guess something went wrong as i just reextracted the file from mega and it suddenly works well. Thank you :)
Hello,

thanks for posting these solutions, but I'm a little bit confused now about what is the right file to download (for the GOG version).

- The file from google drive in the starting post?
- Or the Mega file from page 2 posted by "mwnn"?

Greetings
