CorruptAssassin: Sorry its still not overly clear what to do with the 'Sounds' folder.
Do we delete it? The MEGA archive obviously contains two .dta files that we place in the root directory, which have no impact on the contents of the Sounds folder, as the OP is suggesting.

Do we delete the Sounds folder, as the .dta files are replacing them? Does leaving the Sounds folder in tact impact on the .dta files in any way?
This post makes it very clear what to do with it.

You delete it. I imagine it works in the same way as PAK files for Quake and other such games, as the data files contain the folders and files, and if you then have actual files in the same folders with the same names then those take precedence over the ones in the data files, so if you don't delete them then they will still be used.
Hi, not on same topic but I'm trying to get Mafia working on Windows 10 and am having no luck at all doing so. I bought the disk many years ago (German version) and have been dying to play it again.

If anyone know how to fix this or point me in a direction that could fix it, I would appreciate it if you could let me know.

Thanks!

Hello!

It's simply not possible to play the disc version of Mafia on Windows 10. At least, if you're using a non-cracked edition. The reason is the copy protection SafeDisc, which is used. On Windows 7, you can use a certain Windows command that it works. However, on Windows 10, this is not possible anymore.

Maybe you should wait a bit longer? I heard that GOG is already trying to get the approval for releasing Mafia in other languages.
Shoot, that is disappointing :-/ I guess I'll consider just buying the new version that works.

Thanks for the quick response!
"1. Install Mafia from GOG.

2. Download this package: LINK

3. Extract it and copy the 'SOUNDS' folder to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask you if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'. "

In this archive there are only 2 files.

a0.dta and ab.dta

No Sound folder. What do I do with these 2?

When I copy them into the main folder and rename the sound folder, theres no music at all in the game.

There a no similar files in the existing Sound folder.

Just follow the steps from post 39: https://www.gog.com/forum/mafia/tutorial_how_to_restore_the_original_music/post39

Delete the folder "Sounds" in the existing Mafia directory (default location: C:\GOG Games\Mafia) and then extract the two files from the Mega download into your Mafia directory.

And thanks again @mwnn!

ShadowOwl: Ah, totally overlooked those files. Guess we need an updated package in OP. Thanks for pointing that out!

mwnn: Well spotted; I assumed they'd only meddled with the files in the Music folder so I've been caught out by this also.

Here's a list of files that have been altered in the GOG release of MAFIA:
https://pastebin.com/cm489NEb

I've got an alternative solution.
Rather than extracting the files using Mafia Data Extractor.
We can simply restore the missing DTA files - just as it was originally!

- Delete the SOUNDS folder from C:\GOG GAMES\MAFIA
- Download the following archive:

Mega link

Alternative link - Google Drive - please try Mega first

- Extract into your installation folder i.e. C:\GOG GAMES\MAFIA

It's another self extracting 7zip archive. I've included A0.DTA (Sound FX) and AB.DTA (Music)
http://www.kamalook.de/Mafia/DTA.html

I should have done it this way originally now that I think about it... =S

p.s. does anyone else experience the game not shutting down properly when exiting? I have to kill it using the Task Manager.
Music restored, thank you!
Quick off-topic question: yea yea I know this is 15 years old game, however does it supposed to lag a little bit?
When playing it I have a feeling frames are kinda not displayed correctly.

The game seems to run a lot smoother if I disable any Windows Compatibility modes that have been pre-set on the game's EXE.
I had this issue with Black Hawk Down as well.
It's set to Windows XP SP3 by default. You can try disabling this or setting something different.

Mafia runs a lot better for me now with Windows 10 LTSB.
It does crash on exit sometimes for some weird reason.

Perfect, thanks mate, that link describes the process much clearer thanks. I mucked around with it anyway and yeah, extracting the .dta files to Mafia root directly, while deleting the Sounds folder, worked a treat.

Just to make it ABSOLUTELY clear to others; click the link above and follow the steps from mwnn's post.
I wish GOG at least put original CD image as it did with Quake
If you like this type of music, look for Gypsy Jazz. A bit off topic, but I was glad when I found out in 2002 :)

But the music for Mafia wasn't stored as CD tracks, it was stored in data files. And as we now have those data files we can resolve this issue perfectly.

Quake, on the other hand, has the CD image for the DOS version running in DOSBox.

The solution is nice indeed, but having CD Images in official distribution from which we can extract the data files feels... I don't know... more official :)
It'll still be a workaround but they have managed to pull it off with Quake so I wounder why not for this game.

Why is it necessary to replace the DTA files instead of just simply coping the music folder?
It's not necessary... it's just another solution. Overwriting the files in the sounds/MUSIC folder with this files works fine. And they also should work with the soon™ upcoming languages too.
