For the first time since 2008, 1.13 has a new stable release!

http://ja2v113.pbworks.com/w/page/4218339/FrontPage

Based on the source code of Jagged Alliance 2, the 1.13 mod has had slow and steady work by a dedicated community for roughly the last decade. It includes:

- much smarter AI
- many, many more guns and greater ability to add stuff to them
- higher resolution (1024x768 max)
- vastly improved support for modding
- multiplayer!
- interface improvements
- better inventory management

Well, considering it is the finest game of it's type ever created, and we've literally seen nothing like it since (and, with the focus on real-time everything for the modern ADD crowd, never will see anything like it again), they don't have much choice.

And I still have my CDs, including the 'Hidden and Dangerous' demo cd in a sleeve that I apparently never opened, heh. Oh, SIRTECH, if only more users had called your 1-900 hint line for $0.95/minute... :D I'll have to reinstall sometime soon and check out 1.13.

Agreed that it's an extremely fine example of an unfortunately sparse genre.

Incidentally,
http://lparchive.org/Jagged-Alliance-2/
for those that haven't stumbled upon it before -- it's a extremely silly, not necessarily family-friendly AAR using an older version of 1.13, starriing a Dagny Taggart incarnation (handle 'Mo Money') and her friends from MERC (!).

It's not JA-related, but from that site I also highly recommend the 'Boatmurdered' AAR of Dwarf Fortress.

Also known as "How to completely ridiculise Atlas Shrugged while gassing poor soldiers with mustard grenades".

Good to know there's a new version up. Time to update.

Edit:
Well, now I see why it took this long to update. There's quite a few new features added. Really worth starting a new game.

Hello,

i tried to install the patch 1.13 on the gog.version 1.12 of ja2 without much luck. I use Winxp as OS. I got the error missing binkw32.dll and fmod.dll. I tried to install those two *.dll's, without success. Has anyone an idea what i am doing wrong?

Have a nice day.

Where did you install them? Because I currently have them in JA2's main folder and the game is working fine for me :)
I likewise am trying to install the new version. The old version worked fine on me Windows 7 netbook, but the new one refuses to start. I can edit the Ini files without a problem, but I can't launch any of the other editors in addition to the actual game. I just get a black screen for a few seconds, and then get brought back to the desktop. No error messages of any sort. This happens whether the new patch just released is added or not.

Anyone got any ideas where I might going wrong? Please?

Edit: Egads, broke the lurking barrier.

Is this mod a good install for someone who has yet to play the game? I've heard good things about it but am not sure if I should try vanilla first or just go for the modded version right away.

Play vanilla first, its an excellent game on its own, and when you play 1.13 you'll notice more of the changes and appreciate the mod more :)

This is a good suggestion: 1.13 is a gamechanger mechanics-wise but the game is pretty much the same, but if you are new to JA2, playing vanilla will be overall easier to play and learn. Inventory management, for one, is easier to deal with in vanilla, for one, although 1.13 adds a ton of different backpack, vests, holsters and is an overall great system, albeit it can be annoying at the start.

i tried to run the original 1.12 and it worked, but when i tried to run the new 1.13, it also reported a missing smack32.dll file.... and i installed it only with the new patch inside the origina gog jagged alliance 2 folder..

The 1.13 4452 archive should contain the file, but the 4462 HOTFIX will not. The archive should contain the folders Data-1.13 and Profiles too, while the hotfix is only ja2.exe (as far as I recall). In case you did install the full mod, and not just the hotfix, tell me and I'll upload you the missing dll files.
i did have the one installer that is complete and ran it. the data 1.13 and profiles files are there but it still doesn't seem to run and has the missing file?

smackw32.dll on Mediafire
It seems however that my copy of smackw32.dll was installed during the installation of JA2 Gold, and not when 1.13 was extracted, so there may be a problem with your default installation. If still no help, do send a PM and we can continue the discussion there.
