As the music is stored as ogg files in \ImperialisII\MUSIC I would assume it has to do with the codec you are using to play ogg files.

Check if ogg files are associated with any program/codec and remove this link and then try again. This problem happens with quite a lot of games that an external codec (external to the game) is screwing up the payback and no this is not a fault of the game but a fault of Windows......
It was associated with VLC, but I went into regedit and removed it. Restarted, the ogg files were no longer open with VLC.

However, they still didn't play in game. Any other ideas?

Thanks for your quick response.
Did you install any codec pack? (at all, or just plain default)

If you do:

Check out this page:

https://www.raymond.cc/blog/checking-installed-audio-and-video-codecs-on-your-computer/

For me ogg is associate with flv and using Vorbis Audio codec.

Could be that the codec pack has some problems.

On other thing, Out of the readme:

Problem: I'm not hearing any music while playing the game, but I am hearing other sound effects. What should I do?

Solution: We've found that some soundcards that offer sound accelleration conflict with Imperialism II's handling of music playback. Turn off the option for sound accelleration.

That's all what I can think of in the moment.

I have the same problem, thanks for pointing me to the readme. I am wondering how to disable sound acceleration. Is this an option in the game preferences? Unfortunately, I can't find the setting. Does anyone have any idea?

Depends on your Windows version:

Thanks for pointing me to these links. I fear that it will be more complicated in my situation. I am using Wine 2.1 on ubuntu 16.04.

I tried to find out how to disable hardware acceleration in Wine and found this page:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/3284/sound-in-wine-only-partially-working

However, in Wine audio settings there is no option for hardware acceleration. I guess this has been removed in more recent versions of Wine. This post confirms this expression:

you just have to make it more complicated, right? ;)

Just for fun (evilgrin)

You could try this:

http://www.hecticgeek.com/2012/01/how-to-remove-pulseaudio-use-alsa-ubuntu-linux/

And out of the descriptions it might solve your problem.

And/or: Did you try to get specific drivers for your system? (some HW-developers do offer Linux drivers)
If so, same results? (if applicable ;) )

As mentioned in the article, sometimes specific drivers are not really in the rep. or might get added later (dell)
Any way to fix this problem on Windows 10?

Yes.

In case you do not have a CD/DVD ROM attached to your system, either attach the build in iso-player of WIn10 or install Virtual Clonde drive.

This way the music will be played.

I have a DVD Drive in my laptop.
I've tried installing it from GOG galaxy and downloading the installer, each time
doing a fresh install, it doesn't play music.

Which Win?
directx9.0c installed?
directplay?

No sound at all or just no music?
@ Goodaltgamer, I don't want to demean the feedback that you're offering.

Nonetheless, I gotta say...**INSERT JACKIE CHAN CONFUSED FACE**

Dude, I'm - like - super retarded when it comes to this shit, yo. When you say "Codec", I'm thinking that little radar thing that Solid Snake uses in Metal Gear Solid. I have no clue WTF an "ogg" is. And, finally, when one says "driver"...I'm thinking Mario Andretti, Dale Earnhardt, you know?

At the end of the day, I paid good money for this shit. Shouldn't it just - I don't know - work? I mean, damn.

DannyDresdan,

I do understand your attitude ;)

I only replied because of your nice response (I am not kidding!!!)

I am kind of semi retired because of stupid GOG behaviour (giving advise in the german forum, getting attacked by another user and when responding accordingly getting warned by a (no sorry) dickhead of GOG for using appropriate words.....)

But to your problem ;)

visit https://www.elby.ch/products/vcd.html

Yes it is the right one Jackie chan (this made me reply ;) man I like this guy!!! )

Download and install and reboot (I think it asked you for it) and you shall be set.
I did open a ticket with GOG for this behaviour #183390, but no real reply........

This should take care of your problem without thinking about anything else (or not break your brain while trying to solve this problem ;) )

EDIT: little hint ;) using the reply function will give the user you address a little hint that you replied to him, so enhancing your chance you will get a reply ;)

I think there's a tiny language barrier here...but I get some gist of whatcha talking about.

This Virtual CloneDrive looks similar to Daemon Tools. Is that what this is?
