So I just started chapter 4, but when I go to dorn's deep, kill all the neo-orogs, and try to go into the cave, the game goes to the "auto save" screen then the "loading area" screen for like a second and then crashes to black, and the only way out is via ctrl alt delete. So I'm thinking there may be a problem with that area map file, so I may re-download/re-install. I have the tweak pack, unfinished business and the widescreen mod installed, and the latest patch up to 1.42. It is the gog version. My big question is, is it possible to keep my save games? If i just copy the mpsave folder (with all the save files in it) and then uninstall/re-install and switch them back over? Thanks in advance!

Not sure if the saves are set up like in NWN and other games where the area files are part of the saves.

However, one thing you mentioned caught my attention: you say you have patch 1.42. Did you install that on the GOG version, because if you did, that may be an issue (not sure if it would cause the problem you're experiencing though). The GOG version is patched to the latest anyway, so no need to install that one on top.

I have the game installed with all the mods you listed on my Win7 64 bit rig and have no issues, so perhaps that one difference (applying the patch, if that's what you did) is it.
No, I never installed the patch, mistake in my wording, and I actually just reinstalled the game from my original GOG download, and copied all the files over from my old saves (the cache, mpsave, temp, and override folders, as those were the ones kept when prompted by the uninstaller to keep save files), and still no luck, it continues to crash.

I suppose I can try redownloading, because other than that I don't know why that would happen. Could my save be possibly corrupted? It's the auto save where I'm loading from, as my last hard save is from quite a ways back. Not too far, but I'd rather not replay half of the severed hand again.

I'm stumped.

Entirely possible it's a corrupted save. Might be better to try that older save first rather than a full reinstall, since you'd have to play right from the beginning if you reinstall the game.
Maybe you could clarify some things:

1. Have you been to the area you try to enter before? If you haven't it can not be a corrupted save. If you have, it well could be a corrupted save.
2. Which exact area do you mean? It's been a while and I can't identify it with the given description
3. Could you post your weidu.log.

Where's the loading bar when the game crashes. The stuff is loaded in an order. A crash at the beginning means something different than a crash at the end.
Thanks, I can clarify some things.

I have never been to the area that crashes the game, so it's good to know that it's not a corrupted save.

I go to Dorn's Deep from the world map. The first screen loads. It is outside, there are some Neo-Orogs, and a cave that leads to the next part of the map. Attempting to enter the cave causes the game to crash.

The loading bar is right at the beginning. It loads for perhaps 15% of the bar and then the game crashes. This is consistent.

I have re-installed to no luck. I am currently attempting a re-download.

How do you post a weidu log? I checked google but it's a little over my head at the moment.

Ok, that clarifies things (there actually two Dorn's Deeps so I wasn't sure)

Well, if I'm not mistaken that would mean corrupted BAMs (the animationsets for creatures and charakters). Maybe someone who's more involved in IE-Modding can correct me if I am wrong.

Although to be fair, it doesn't have to be a gameasset. It could well be some technical problem with graphics.

The weidu.log is a log-file that is created during the installation of mods and lists all mods and all components with their chosen options and language. It's located in your IWD1-folder at the very bottom of the list. You can open it with any textedtor or word processor. Windows Notepad or Windows Writer or MS Word x or OpenOffice or whatever you have will work just fine. Copy the content and post it here so we can have a look at what you have installed.

If you feel like experimenting you can activate cheats and teleport your party to the area AR6001, which would be the one you try to enter. Start a new game and test it just to make absolutely sure it has nothing to do with your save.

Cheats are:
IWD: HoW / TotL
Enable
Open the Icewind.ini file (located in the IWD installaion directory).
Find the line [Game Options] and add the text Cheats=1 underneath.
Access
Create a new game / load a save game.
Press ctrl and tab together.
CLUA commands can be entered in the editing area that appears at the bottom of the screen.
Commands must be prefixed with GETYOURCHEATON:

Teleporting works via the MoveToArea()-function, which would be GETYOURCHEATON:MoveToArea("AR6001") (this is case sensitiv!)
I'm in the exact same situation as the original poster - getting the exact same crash in the same spot. Someone asked for a weidu log file, and here is mine:

Oh yeah, I followed the directions in PsychoWedge's post to activate the cheat console. I started a new game with a newly created level one character with only the default gear. Once Hrothgar was done with his little welcoming speach in the tavern, I opened up the console and issued the MoveToArea command. This resulted in an immediate crash of the game. It looks like the problem is not in the savegame for either myself or the OP.
Where is the loading bar at the crash? The same area (first third)?

I've just found this thread and am having *exactly* the same problem. I've reloaded using the auto-save and my manual save game (immediately after defeating the Neo-Orogs but before entering the cave).

Btw, I also have the gog version and a few patches (can't recall which) but before this, the game ran flawlessly.
It is a bit difficult for me to tell since I have an SSD and the loading bar usually fills very quickly. The game crashed immediately after I hit enter on the console command. I can try again while looking very carefully to see If I can catch the bar before the screen goes black.

Just found this:
http://www.planetbaldursgate.com/iwd/media/files/patches/index.shtml

Copied and pasted:
Icewind Dale Patch, v. 1.06

The Icewind Dale Patch, version 1.06, is available, and the readme.txt file lists the bugs that were fixed. It is available in several language versions:
English - 3.2 MB (released 7/30/00)
German - 3.2 MB (released 8/17/00)
French - 3.2 MB (released 8/17/00)
Spanish - 3.2 MB (released 8/17/00)
A special patch (6.0 MB) has been released for UK version due to a CD duplication error as explained by Darren Monahan, Associate Producer. (released 9/27/00)
Some of our UK customers have reported problems entering Lower Dorn's using the UK version of Icewind Dale. We have discovered that a later batch of CD 2's had a duplication error that caused the area data for the entrance to Lower Dorns to be corrupt, causing Icewind Dale to crash. We have made this patch available for customers who are having this problem.

I'm hesitant to install the patch as it's old and I'm not entirely sure whether it's 1) Compatible and 2) If by "the lower levels of Dorn's Deep" they're referring to the same issue.

Anyone have any suggestions on how I can test this?

1.06 is a patch for IWD only. If you have the Heart of Winter expansion (which is included in the GoG-version of the game) installed you really, really should not install an IWD only patch. The Patch for IWD: HoW is 1.41 resp. 1.42 . 1.42 adds the Trials of the Luremaster miniaddon. This is also included in the GoG version.

If any of you did not install everything but just IWD (meaning you unchecked the HoW and TotLM fields) now would be the right time to... confess... :D

Anyway, this area is very strange. I looked at it with Near Infinity and it is completely empty. There is nothing there. No creatures, no area script. Nothing but a few pois and entry/exit-points. But ingame the area is full of monsters. I am kinda confused...

I don't have my old cd-install anymore because I replaced that with the GoG downloaded one so I can't check if this is normal.

EDIT:
There is an option to activate crashlogging in Baldur's Gate 1/2. I don't know if this works in IWD but it's worth a try I guess.

Open your icewind.ini and add Logging On=1 right under [Program Options] so that it looks like this:

...
[Program Options]
Logging On=1
SoftSrcKeyBltFast=0
SoftBltFast=0
...

Thanks - I'm glad I checked first before installing said patch.

I've updated the .ini file as suggested, started the game and then watched it crash. Not sure though what to do next or what I should be looking for. Any further guidance and help would be appreciated.
