Hi,

So I bought and downloaded Heroes IV a few days ago and was really looking forward to beating the campaigns because I never managed it as a kid.

The game has a real tendency to crash during battles though. I mean every session ends in a crash and it's always during a battle. I could be playing for 10 minutes or an hour but during one battle or another it will just freeze completely and I won't be able to return to desk top either. There's also no way to force stop the programme so the only fix is to restart the PC.

Not currently at my PC so I can't post specs yet but I'm running W8.1, the programme is running in XP service pack 2 and as administrator.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could you try the suggestion mentioned in this post?
https://www.gog.com/forum/heroes_of_might_and_magic_series/homm_4_crash_during_battle_windows_8/post2

It relates to a problem of crashing during battles on Windows 8. And from the looks of it, the solution did work for the person who had the problem.

EDIT:
If you read the rest of the thread, there are other suggestions too.

Also, you could try my suggestion here. Though not specifically for freezing during battles, I had performance problems on highest resolution till I used DxWnd.

HoMM4 seems to have the biggest performance issues on modern systems from all the games in the series.

Thanks a lot mate! It's been working flawlessly since that single CPU fix! I never would have found that thread if not for your link, you've been a massive help
Have you tried running the game on one processor core? (Start the game ---> Alt + Ctrl + Del to go into task manager ---> Right click on the Heroes 4 .exe in the processes list ---> click set affinity ---> have only one box ticked) You'll have to do that every time you start the game. Heroes 3&4 are know to crash on multi-core CPU's it's a shame GOG still haven't made run on one core out of the box. Although Heroes 4 seems to have more issues with crashing.

This helps me too (on WIN10). Thank you for thread!

There is already fix for this: Graphic GL Wrapper. Just extract dll in the game folder. CPU usage is already fixed nad it is better then set affinity for one core.
i restared my PC i went into a battle it crashed again maybe my PC cannot run it or they have a problem and cant fix i mean gog.com

No it has nothing to do with the CD. Heroes IV has problems running on modern machines. Download the graphic GL wrapper.

I´ve tried most of recommanded tips for solving the issue, that the game crashes when having a battle.
All those downloads and patches and other tips doesent work on Windows 10 for me.

Truely what realy helped, was to shut dow all the other processor cores to only one.
Try it like it was described here, or in other Forums before. It realy works!
You only have to do it every time when you´ve started the game again.
But so you can enjoy the game!

Note that the GL Wrapper suggested above has, among many other features, a menu shortcut to set CPU affinity directly and permanently on start, without having to popen the task manager every time

Just switch temporarly to windowed mode (F4) and look under the 'Options' menu
