So I bought Gothic as part of the weekend sale and I'm disappointed to find out I'm suffering from the missing inventory pictures bug. I've checked this thread:
http://www.gog.com/en/forum/gothic/item_pictures_in_inventory_not_visible
And it seems to indicate that Gothic seems to have an issue with Radeon X1*** cards. The only solution seems to be trying different drivers.
I'm running the game on WinXP SP3 with a Radeon X1950 GT card using the 8.12 Catalyst drivers. If anybody knows what drivers would work or another work around for this issue I would be very greatful.
Thank you in advance.

I'm no help at all, sorry. I use NVidea. But I wanted to ask if this occurs everytime???
The reason I ask, is because this happens sometimes to me with my NVidea too. But if I just get out of inventory, and change direction or something, then go back into inventory, it "fixes" itself. I know that's not the answer you're looking for, but I've grinned and beared it so far. But if it happens everytime with a Radeon card, then that would be unacceptable.
Good luck though.
EDIT: LOL, for some reason I can't post the word I'm at the beginning????
I typed I'm, everytime I press edit it says I'm in the box, but then when I press Post my message it comes up I&;#039;m

Yes unfortunately this issue occurs every time, it doesn't make the game completely unplayable but it's extremely annoying. I hope that there is some way to resolve it.
EDIT: I've attached a picture to show exactly what I am talking about.

Yeah, that's exactly what mine does too, but it only does it on mine on certain occassions. That is too bad, because while I agree it doesn't make the game unplayable, it does take some joy out and makes it a real hassle to find something when you have to move over everything to read it. That's why when it happens to me I quickly get out a try again.
Good luck man, I do hope you find a fix for this.
Unfortunately I am suffering from this very same issue as well. Having already played the game back around when it first came out, its kinda hard to play it again without the pictures. Because the inventory management is somewhat clunky in this game, not having pictures just makes it more difficult. I hope some better fix can be made for this issue.
I had the same issue, but the text is there for the name of the item.
I am still lost as to what use coins are in the game?

There is no use for the coins in the prison colony.
Money is worth nothing in your situation, ore is everything.

I'm sorry, but there is no solution for this problem other than use a different graphic card.
It is a well known bug in the community, but there was no workaround for this so far, and people tried everything.
The same thing also happens with other cards where it can be solved with different drivers.
For the Radeon x1*** series however there is no solution.
One of the Makers of the game once stated, he was working on this problem privately I think, but that seemed to have died away.
As I said the only practicable solution is to get a cheap, used graphic card.
It is up to you if this bug is reason enough to spend money for.
Sorry I couldn't help.

If you have a graphic card other than the Radeon x1*** series the case is not lost, try different driver versions.

Thanks for the response although I personally think that buying a used, old graphics card is not a very practical solution. I could possibly try using the integrated graphics on my motherboard but even that is a ATI Radeon X1250 so there is a good chance I'll still get the bug. I think I'll probably just live with the bug as the game is still playable.
If a some sort of fix mod ever materializes hopefully GOG will provide it as a download or at the very least have a link to it.
Once again thanks for your help, your post is probably the closest thing we have to a solution right now.
As the matter of fact, that glitch dissapears when I run the game under Linux via Wine. And I have a radeon x1950xt card.
P.S. In your face, microsoft! =)
It seems that polygons and such that are really close to the screen overlap the inventory icons.
Example, in a tight room where there is a wall up close on the right side of the screen, I see no inventory icons, but if I spin the camera away from it, they appear.
This issue is hardly SOLVED as the title suggests. I am very disappointed that I did not know this before I bought the game. I have a 1950 and no inventory icons. Will the icons appear if I have a 4870? or is the issue anything 1XXX and newer?

It's solved in the way that there is no solution and only way for Radeon X1XXX series card owners can see the icons is to buy a new card. Plus no one is working on solution (anymore) as far as anyone knows. (It IS possible someone makes an unofficial patch someday as has happened to few other old classics but it will be difficult as even a former member of the development team failed in his attempt to fix it).
As far as I know this exact problem only affecs the X1XXX series cards so with 4XXX series it should work, but someone with said card could be kind enough to verify.
Game is playable even without the icons, it's just bloody inconvenient (yes I'm also affected, I have Sapphire Radeon X1950 Pro Ultimate, PCI-E, 256Mt)

This still should be listed in the game description somewhere....
I just wanted to say that I agree... I agree that this is far from solved. Why post that you have a solution when there isn't one? I appreciate the honesty in saying that it cannot be fixed but do not post "solved" when the problem still exists. I have a radeon 1950 card and almost bought the game. If I had bought the game and seen this so called solution I guarantee I would be requesting my money back. Also a warning to gamers would be helpful since I am now weary of buying anything before doing a thorough background check through the forums and online.

I see where you come from, as my last two graphics cards were also made by ati and ati is notorious for poor support of any gothic game (including gothic 3), but i think such issues with old games not working properly on new hardware is 100% hardware manufacturers fault. They don't seem to give rats ass about backwards compatibility. I really feel that the customers should lash out at these ignorant bastards much more. Essentially almost 50% of pre directx 9 games are broken these days regardless of your graphics card manufacturer.
