Get Xenonauts, Total Annihilation games, King's Bounty series, and 20+ more strategy titles up to 70% off!

So you're hungry for power, but not a big fan of first-hand combat? You'd much rather look from a distance, calm and collected like a chess Grandmaster, planning ahead to, step by step, leave your opponent with less and less choices, until you're ready to finish him off with a carefully set-up final blow. The setting is secondary, the satisfaction from leading your troops to victory is what counts. This is why our Strategy Supreme Weekend Promo will take you to a variety of battlegrounds. Let's take a look at some of the games on this weekend's offer:

Xenonauts is an obvious spiritual successor to the classic X-Com strategy games from the 90s, that manages to pay homage to the classics and,at the same time, creatively expand some of the mechanics and systems. Once again you lead a trans-national military organisation against an alien invasion in the troubled times of the Cold War. In King's Bounty: The Legend you can experience tactical fantasy warfare like nowhere else. With both real-time and turn-based gameplay the title allows you to jump between first-person adventuring and grand-scale combat. With colorful, distinct visuals, humorous approach to fantasy classics, and a vast world to roam through the game will confront you with many unique challenges. For a classic fix make sure to check out Total Annihilation: Commander Pack, one of the finest RTS games in history full of epic sci-fi battles, complete with a stunning soundtrack by Jeremy Soule.

But that's only scratching the surface of our weekend promo! There are plenty more stellar games to test your mettle and leadership skills in the Strategy Supreme promo lienup, so make sure to have a look! The offer lasts until Tuesday, October 28, at 3:59AM GMT.

Vythonaut: Unfortunately, from what I can see in their website, they don't offer a drm-free version, only a steam key.. That being said, I'm not interested buying it on steam so I'll wait and see if it gets released drm-free or even better on GOG sometime..
I'm patient and have enough games that I too can wait. =P I just hope that This War of Mine will be released on GOG since the developers are here already. I really want to play that game, so if that turns out to be Steam-only it will make me most sad.

This game looks very interesting. If done right in terms of people behavior, it could turn out great. It's now on my radar. Thanks for pointing it out.

There are a number of YouTubers who've done previews on the gameplay: Quill18, MathasGames and Unit Lost to name a few.

It looks like they are trying very hard to do it right and I like that all the portraits are of regular joes: pictures of themselves and their friends.

I haven't heard about this game until now.. thanks! Great concept, I really like this ant-nest view and the real photo portraits. The graphics are really good, only the GUI is on the bad side - too cumbersome like a console game. In general, the game reminds me of Zafehouse Diaries.. I can't wait!
Here the link to the wishlist post about This War Of Mine . Go and vote for it - I did for sure! :D

Has anyone else noticed that the front page timer is 6 hours behind than the one on the actual promo page or is it just me? The Flatout timer seems to agree on both pages. :-O

jackster79: Ninja'ed about openXcom! Great little dood-dad that is.... I found out about it recently, fired it up, and was promptly reminded about why I never finished the game, even on beginner. Either I just do not know how to play these kinds of games or I should expect my squad to always be a revolving door. And the ridiculous bias against the player odds-wise (stupid terror mission where the Stingray lands in a zone completely surrounded by the enemy and I shoot point blank and it is like the bullets bounce off them! Needless to say it was a complete squad wipe...)

One of these days I will manage to beat that one... for now, the urge has been checked real good...
Yeah - my first real terror mission I had 3 cyberdisks right outside my door. Not cool at all! Over time, you'll learn the aliens weaknesses. Or when to run screaming if they get close to you.

Another bug - if you stun an alien that perform biting/clawing and put it in your backpack, then float or position yourself such that the alien *should* fall down if he wakes up... well, prepare to be bitten. The alien won't fall until he takes a step, so it's possible he may bite whole cluster of your (likely high ranking) people, which will cause the peons to go nuts and shoot each other. Murphy's Rule of War #2: Friendly Fire - ain't.

As for winning, well, back in the day I wasn't so good. I would resurrect my soldiers from the dead. How? In the savegame folder, soldier.dat, you could edit a certain byte sequence and bring folks back from the brink of death (heh). I believe one would change a FF into a 00 or 01. Sometimes I'd forget to remove other soldiers from the Skyranger, which would lead to floating soldiers above the terrain. Great for surveying terrain quickly - not so great for them, they typically got picked off quick.
Hmmm.... no one wanted to convince me to get Etherlords 1 & 2, or Conquest: Frontier Wars?

Ah well... sod it...

Figured what the hey, go ahead and get 'em, so.... I went ahead 'n got 'em.

Three more to add to the ol' back-log.

Hmmm.... yeah, I remember those round buggers. Nasty things! Seemed like I needed the mobile tank to be able to take one down within a reasonably quick amount of time.

Farthest I ever got was May/June/July of 1999. It seemed that no matter what I did I could not prevent the funding from drying up. That is one flaw in their design: the inability to win back any funding (my personal opinion of course).

Anyway, time-wise, how far would you say you would need to go before the early game stabilizes and your squad stops becoming "Fresh Meat # 142"?

Did the promo end 5 hours too soon?

I think weekend promos usually end around this time, but there was something wonky going on with the timers not matching up. =/

I just found out when I got into the promo page thinking there was plenty of time to get something according to the banner timer and I see a "This promo has ended."

[spoilers - maybe]
Tactics:
Armor is what your dudes need. The UFO plating may provide a clue. Medkits are also crucial, once you have armor. Also, save time for reaction shots and kneeling. Reactions can help you when you open a door, also. OpenXcom allows you to actually open a door instead of charge through, like in Terror From the Deep - a great feature. Also, your dudes need light, so be sure to take some electro flares, or if you can help it, do your missions in the daytime. Bug exploit: If you have two skyrangers, send each to a terror site. So long as one skyranger has it targetted, it will not expire, so you can do it in the daytime. Also, do NOT stun civilians. At best, after stunning they will no longer count for being 'saved'. Even when the enemy does it. At worst when they rise, they'll become your enemy that you have to kill - and it will count against you as a civilian Xcom kill.

Low reaction times mean you can't nail an alien shaking his booty in front of you, even if you're a sniper and have all TUs saved up, so make sure your high reaction spotters are placed by the door or choke point according to their accuracy. Mob those doors and choke points, too, and don't take territory too aggressively. Make sure your folks aren't weighted down too heavily. Also make sure that the dude with the rocket launcher doesn't reaction fire into a squad of your people. And don't forget to take smoke into account when your soldiers are stunned or wounded.

Yeah, it bites that you can't get your lost countries back, even if you clean the one or two bases out of their neighborhoods. Not all alien bases will be in funding countries, though. I've found some in the strangest places.

Funding:
Oh, funding didn't ever seem to be problem for me. But your funding may dry up faster if you sell alien entertainment. Yeah, you get 20k to 40k per panel, but it is cursed! It tells the other countries that the aliens have a culture, and therefore can be bargained with, IIRC.

Also, you can have your engineers make laser rifles or pistols and make a handy profit. It does depends on the game version, though. Xcom DOS, you could self-fund pretty easily with those. Xcom Windows fixed that, but you could still make a pretty penny off of the Laser Pistols. There's an FAQ on gamefaqs that details what gives you the most bang for your buck, engineer production wise.
[/spoilers]

It is best to at least get some SR radar in the other countries as soon as you can afford it, and if you can support it, a B and C team to handle issues at other points on the globe. Of course, don't lay out your base like the initial one - it is awful on base defense missions. I used to edit it by hand - now I use XcomUtil or OpenXcom - to make my starting base more fortress-like.

Good luck beating the aliens. I know I beat Xcom, but I cannot really recall if I finished TFTD or not. I think I did, though. Hacked the crap out of TFTD weapons, though, 'cause they are way gimped compared to Xcom. No explosive launchers above ground! Arg!

Good luck with those games. I lost many nights playing those.
