What's makes a balanced gaming diet? As we understand it, it should be composed of a solid main course, and something lighter for dessert. In our Strategy First catalog it's not hard to compose such a delicious meal. One of the deep and complex strategy games would serve as the main course, and there's plenty of action games to go with them. If just one plate leaves you hungry for more, there's no point in denying yourself seconds. Everything on the menu is 60% off, this weekend. We know you'd like to go ahead and dig in, so let's just name a few dishes from our [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/strategy_first_weekend_promo_210214]Strategy and Action Special weekend promo, shall we?

We've got games from the Jagged Alliance series, if you like army rations served with a rich turn-based tactical sauce. We've got Space Empires IV Deluxe and O.R.B. Offworld Resource Base, if your taste in strategy calls for something otherworldly exotic. There's also some hot and spicy auto racing in , for those of you who like fast food. Finally, if you're trying to eat light, there's the ethereal dish that is [url=http://www.gog.com/game/ghost_master]. What a delight!

Sounds yummy, doesn't it? But thats only a small taste! Go to our Strategy and Action Special page to sample the whole 60% off buffet! The promo lasts until Tuesday, February 24, at 7:29AM GMT. Don't miss out on the feast!
Hm...can't decide between Ghost Master and Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord. Any pointers?

(we've been so spoiled with promos that at only 60% discount I'll probably only buy one game this time)
I'm "afraid " i have to buy at least Jagged Alliance 2 since i fell in love with the first one which i bought from time machine sale, some other interesting games also, like always :D

But I share in your silliness. :)
There you go! :-) The Week on GOG #003

tinyE: Ever since STARS! stopped working on my OS I've been looking for something comparable in terms of look and learning curve (as easy or hard as you want with some flexibility). Space Empires IV looks like it might fit the bill but I'd like to hear from anyone (if there is anyone) that is familiar with both STARS! and Space Empires.
While I have both Space Empires & Galactic Civ here on GOG, sadly I haven't played either yet.

STARS! I have played on and off since pre-1.0 (was in beta). And Supernova still sits as an unfulfilled Father's Day gift request (which we still kid about every Father's Day :).

So I just wanted to ask - have you considered using a Virtual Machine (VM) to get it running?

My PC also "can't run" STARS! (because it is 64-bit Windows). But I use a VM running a 32-bit version of Windows to run it. And it runs great that way!

Yes years ago I had one and it was kind of a pain, that and if I installed it I'd have it on there for only one game that I only occasionally play.

BTW I did some reading up on the Space Empires IV and while it seems widely regarded as top notch it is also widely regarded as complicated and tough. I'll leave it to someone with a few more brain cells then myself to play.
Wait, I find everywhere that "Full Spectrum Warrior" had become free.. O_o

EDIT: ok, it seems that the free version has adware.

I don't think SE IV is complicated. In terms of complexity, SE IV is basically Stars! with wormholes added. Maybe people call it complicated just because there can be so many planets in a game, so when you pull up a colonies/production report it will have a lot of stuff in it. (My guess would be people that think SE IV is complicated would tend to also call Stars! complicated.)

Also, I don't think SE IV is tough -- though I only ever played 1/2 a game of SE IV, but that's because the AI was a complete push-over. Once I had half the universe under my control (and was disappointed by the lack of tech advancement on the part of all the AIs) and could see that the only question was "how fast can I a crush everyone" (because there was no question of them being crushed -- the AI appears to be rather retarded/incompetent, much more so than other games where that is already true, or perhaps not more so but maybe it's not cheating like AIs in other games -- either way it just doesn't put up a decent fight), there was just no point in playing the game anymore.

Some stuff in SE IV is annoying though. With so many planets and ships, the game desperately needs better management tools. For example, there needs to be a way to take a planet off the production list entirely (e.g., because it's a fully developed research planet or something, and you really don't want to revisit that planet again until you've exhausted the research tree). Without features like that, the game plays a lot slower than it should (which means less fun per unit time). Though I don't consider the UI a deal-breaker -- I would put up with the UI if the AI was any good.

Now, if you weren't very good at Stars!, then you might not be very good at SE IV either, in which case SE IV may be right up your alley, because the AI isn't very good either so you would then be well-matched!

Quick question. Flatout 1 is on this promo. How come Flatout 2 isn't? That's a Strategy First game, isn't it? Should that be on here?

Does SE have a tutorial?

tinyE: Does SE have a tutorial?
Yes it does. IIRC, it's pretty thorough too. (I don't think I ever cracked open a manual for this game.)

Well I'm beat so I'm off to bed but now I have to very seriously consider this one.

Thank you so much; without that posts I might have passed it by and then come to regret it.
I'd like to see more Pay What You Want promos on GOG.

Just started playing and so far it's a lot like STARS, which I just remembered had wormholes too. :p Funny thing is as much crisper as the graphics are than STARS they kind of limit you to the variety of ship portraits. I hope that isn't a problem later when I'm trying to find one ship amid an armada of identical looking ships.
