If you love 4X games you have to try this game it's really hardcore some of the features are:
- Logistics (every ship has supplies that it spends when moving)
-Design your ship by placing the necessary components like guns, shields, armor in your ship class, similar to stardrive.
- Very rich research tree.
- You can board enemy ships and repair them.
- You can build starbases evenread more on asteroids.
- Diplomacy is also deep in terms of features.
- Combat is very tactical and some weapons has their pros and cons, you can choose to kill the crew with Bio Weapons, Board them or control a ship with a Virus if it doesn't have a crew.
- UI is not that great but it works once you get the hang of it.
- Graphics are not that great dunno why they didn't at least changed the race portraits to something more cool instead choose a cheap 1999 3D.
- Diplomacy AI doesn't really work.
- The fact that there are multiple resources to managed instead of just one (money/credits) forces you to micromanage too much at later in a game.
In the end it's a must try for 4X Fans and with simple improvements of UI and Graphics this game could look so much better.

To cut the long story short, seIV is one of the reasons people like 4x games. It has enough complexity, depth and replay value that you can play it for years and be amazed with new stuff. It's main strength was in pbem multiplayer which can still be organized between people interested in this game, it's main weakness was subpar graphics which are horrible to some but should be ofread more no importance whatsoever to a serious strategist like you, my reader ;)
Game has a huge mod potential, and there are sites which still have a great deal of graphical or full conversion mods which really can transform your playing experience. Start your search from Malfador's main site's mod list
and enjoy all the worlds and galaxies which dedicated fans have created.
In my humble opinion, this game has the right mix of everything that makes a good 4x game and is one of those games you play for "just one more turn to see what will happen" ;)

This game is one of my favorite 4x games of all time. Malfador's Space Empires series is interesting, and the strategies within are very deep. Not to mention that the game was built with mods in mind (everything in the game is stored in txt files and pictures).
Full customizeability, a rich tech tree and some of the most engrossing turn-based gameplay around make this one of theread more best games of its kind. Just try to bring a few friends to the game... unless you want to take a crack at coding your own AI, the built-in AI isn't particularly challenging.
