Get SimCity 2000 SE, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Theme Hospital, Dungeon Keeper 1 & 2, and more DRM-free EA classics 60% off!

This weekend nearly 30 classic from the Electronic Arts collection make their way to GOG.com with a solid flat-rate 60% discount. A line-up of timeless games arriving at such speed deserves to be called nothing shorto of a [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/ea_weekend_promo_030513]Classic EA Convoy! You'll find memorable stand-alone titles here, as well as all-time favorite series. Games from many genres to suit all tastes and temperaments. Whether you are an adventurous soul, a keen manager, or a daunting pilot, you'll find an excellent match for yourself on our promo page. But before you go there, let's take a quick look at some of the brilliant games we offer you today, shall we?

There was a time that all that a aspiring mayor of a virtual town needed, was a computer plugged in into nothing more than a power socket. Well, that and a copy of SimCity 2000, preferably the Special Edition that allowed you not only to construct and manage your town--that is: metropolis--but also allowed you to become an architect and design your very own buildings using the patented Urban Renewal Kit. Oh, yes! City-building was carefree and full of bliss, back in the day (up until an earthquake or alien invasion--but even that only happened locally). Many have forgotten, but we, here at GOG.com, remember. Today you can experience the urbanistic utopia once again, for only $2.39--a fraction of what you'd be paying for building a birdhouse, let alone a city!

If you prefer a smaller scale in your managerial sim, but maybe even more gameplay intensity, you should pick up Theme Hospital for only $2.39. This medical facility simulation takes serious matters like health care and exotic diseases with a hefty pinch of humor. Treating Hairyitis in patients suffering from prolonged exposure to moonlight might be a tad challenging, but its got to be fun at the same time. After all, not every day you get to order flea-powder and silverware compress as a treatment, right. Only here!

Lots of humor, even if a bit darker in tone, you will also find in Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2, Bullfrog's excellent fantasy games pitting iron-clad heroes and heroins against a horde of vile dungeon-dwelling monsters led by a repulsive demon. The twist is: this time around you're the evil boss of the dungeon. Command your minions, design deadly traps, and fend off those damn do-gooders trying to perform their petty quests. You also get to hoard ridiculous heaps of gold and jewels here, and the entry investment is only $2.39 for each of the games.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, just as all of the games above, delivers complex and deep strategic gameplay with lots of factors to track at once--probably even more then the others. On top of that, it presents you with the most important task ever undertaken by the humankind: colonization of space! Taking everything that was so involving and enjoyable about the Civilization game, this one takes matters into an otherworldly setting. The version we offer here comes with the elusive Alien Crossfire expansion, all for the low price of--you guessed it--$2.39!

Impressive? Oh, but that's just the tip of the giant mountain of DRM-free EA gems we have lined up for you in our Classic EA Convoy! Be sure to check the whole promo page, not to miss out on any of the excellent titles we offer 60% off until until Tuesday, May 7, at 3:59AM GMT.

Have a nice weekend!
Okay, I will be a douche for a moment. I recently looked at every game Electronic Arts ever published and from their massive catalogue I have taken an interest in only 10 pre-2008 titles:
Alpha Centauri
Clive Barker's Undying
Dune
Dungeon Keeper 2
Oddworld
SimCity 4
System Shock 2
Theme Hospital
Ultima 7
Wasteland

Great thing is that 7 of them are already on GOG and 1 is on its way thanks to a certain Kickstarter. But I realized that there are tons and tons of possible unattractive games taking GOG's sweet release spot from remaining 2 good old games. :(

Anyway, sad face aside, nice promo. I'm still unsure if Alpha Centauri should be on my e-shelf before you add Linux installer or not.

And a question for Ultima 7 fans: Is it the Elder Scroll-type of RPG (NPCs are only vendors/quest givers, environment is mainly enemies and dungeons and focus is on stats and fight) or PS:T type of RPG (primarily oriented on dialogue and NPCs, mostly on the ground than underground)?

Nice one, has quite a few games in it that I've been considering for some time now. Seeing that I already have a quite huge collection of games to play, I'm still not 100% sure which to buy, if any. Any advice regarding those?

Wing Commander 1+2:
I've never played any game of the series, nor any other flight sim / space shooter for that matter (if you don't count Descent), but I've heard these ones are absolutely fabulous. The thing is, (a) I'm usually not very interested in military air-combat sims, space or not, but maybe the story is good enough to make me forget that?, (b) I've heard you should play them with a joystick and I don't have one and I'm not going to buy one either. Would I still be able to enjoy these games playing with keyboard (or mouse - do they support mouse controls at all?). I'd also have PS2 controllers at my disposal, but I don't know if it would be any better or even possible to use them ... Would you still recommend me to try the series or does it sound like it would be wasted on me?

Dungeon Keeper 2:
I've been curious about it for a long time, even though I'm not that good at business sims or RTS or whatever you'd call this (I like Startopia though). Still, at this price I'm willing to give it a try. I've read that the first DK is the better one though, but it doesn't look like it has aged well and DK2 seems a bit more accessible and a bit nicer to look at. To someone who's generally neither expert nor passionate of the genre and just looking for some fun, is it okay to skip DK and just play DK2?

Lands of Lore 3:
I absolutely loved the first LOL, I also own LOL2 and think it's alright but I haven't made much progress in it yet, as it's a tad confusing and a bit more tedious than LOL, IMO. Graphically LOL3 looks even worse than 2 (for someone who prefers the look of LOL1), does it have anything else to speak for it? Should I get it to make the series complete or is it not worth it, if I'm already of two minds about LOL2?

I've only played U7 for a bit, but I can already say that it falls into the second category. You can talk with everyone and it almost feels like an adventure game. The first quest you get in town is a murder mystery and as far as I recall there is no fighting to speak of for the first couple of hours, if you don't leave town, it's all just story and exploration. (I'm sure there will be lots of fighting later on, but storytelling and dialogues are definitely an important aspect of U7, from what I've seen.) I can't really comment on the ground-underground relation, but I think most of the screenshots and gameplay footage I've seen was overground.

I would recommend them both. I like the first one better, but the second game is very good too. There are a few differences between them other than the graphics, but mostly they are very similar.

Graphically, the major difference is that most objects in DK1 are sprite-based (like in Doom or Duke Nukem 3D), while everything in DK2 is rendered in full 3D. However, like most of the early 3D games, the graphics have aged quite badly. In some ways, the sprite-based nature of DK helps it in that regard. Also, it can be very hard to judge how well a game looks from a small screenshot. Try to find some screenshots that you can look at in fullscreen.

All in all, if you really feel like just trying out DK2, go for it. If you've never played either game, then just getting one of them is probably a good idea. They are similar enough that if you don't like one of them at all, chances are that you won't like the other one either. However, if you do get DK2 and find that you like it, I encourage you to pick up DK1 later on and playing that as well.

I'll stay forever flabbergasted that (first-world) people can be so cheap & avaricious to demand discounts on luxury items that are already sold five bucks...
Either you want it that bad and you buy one pizza/beer/sushi less this week to afford it, or you're merely interested in it and you wait... but whining because a videogame is sold five bucks ? Really ?

As graspee said, released too recently.

I would rate myself as a casual strategy gamer. I like playing strategy games focusing on city/facility management or economy (AoE2, The Guild, Knights & Merchants, etc.) and Dungeon Keeper 2 was right up my alley. I never played the first installment and I didn't feel like it limited me in any way. You spend time building henneries and casinos and digging more space for your growing settlement. Eventually you'll always have to deal with invading enemies which can test your resource management quite a lot and that's usually the moment where I start loosing interest. I mean except X-COM but that's a different kind of game :).

Leroux: I've only played U7 for a bit...
Thanks for the reply. Review section of the gamecard contains a couple of reviews saying things like:
An absolutely unmissable game that is worth playing for the story and adventure elements alone, as it is not too combat heavy.
That sounds amazing; I'm definitely getting it this weekend. :)

Did I demand anything? I wasn't aware I was demanding anything. I tried using a worn out meme to ask a question and I got an answer... fair enough, no harm, no foul.

F4LL0UT: Thank God, already own all of those. Which shouldn't be a big surprise, pretty much all of these EA classics are true gems - especially the Origin and Bullfrog games. We definitely need more Westwood games though (the Holy Grail probably being Blade Runner - hope that the license thing won't keep GOG from releasing it one day).
Ditto for me, in that I own the lot and would love to see Westwood games here, Dune and Blade Runner. Blade Runner of course over just about any of their other games though.

Hmm I might go buy a game at full price (damn you gog) as I'm giving my physical copy to charity tomorrow, for a game I don't own here yet. Idea is support the local charity shot with maybe a sale of games (that I've tested work ok at least on XP) while I continue space saving with digital copies.

grviper: It's hilarious, once the initial construction phase is over
Too bad I got bored already at that point. I felt like I was decorating a dollhouse, which is so much not for me.

I guess I'll have to retry it at some point. I actually had the same problem with Rollercoaster Tycoon, it just felt such a bore putting a toilet here and a snack bar there, just because you presume you are supposed to do it. Maybe a merry-go-round somewhere too, but why exactly? Does it help me in any way? Is it better or worse than some other minor attraction?

Yet, at the same time I for some reason find RTS games interesting, where I build my own base. Somehow the feedback for how your base design affects your gameplay is more imminent and apparent in RTS games, than in these tycoon games.
Only missing three of those titles, some excellent games listed. Nice promo GOG. More curious to see if SS2 was listed, sadly not. I will wait for the Christmas sale for it.
Is the Alpha Centauri like most of the old usual games -first vanilla, then expac- or should I start with the expansion?

No Syndicate Wars? Bah. That's the only one I would have bought =(
