The wail of a siren, the bark of a gun. A private eye's job is never easy, and it only gets harder after the world nearly ended. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, though, and you've never given up on a tough job just because life wasn't fair. A Norm has to work hard to stay ahead of the muck that's in this world, and now's your chance to save Frisco from the worst of it. Life's like a dame: you gotta take care of it or, just when you think everything's going fine, you'll be out of luck.

That was a terrible metaphor, but when you've been kicked in the head as much as Tex has--and enjoyed as much bourbon--writing isn't your strong suit. Not much is, except finding the secrets that people don't want found, and making the world a little better.

If you're not familiar to Tex Murphy games let us make a short intro. The games take place in San Francisco, or what's left of it, in a not too distant future. You take the role of Tex Murphy, a down-on-his-luck private detective who finds it hard to make both ends meet every month. All five games are point and click, noir-style adventure games, take you through a different case and will test your deduction skills and wits.

This weekend, you can pick up the Tex Murphy games for 50% off, and see if you've got what it takes to make San Francisco a better place.

Titanium: Oh look, I've got them all. In fact, it's getting harder and harder for me to find an unowned promotion.
avatar
timppu: Which reminds me, have any of the Interplay/Bioware RPGs been in promotion ever (and the "similar" games like Arcanum and Temple of Elemental Evil)? I assume not, as they are probably all time best-sellers here even without...

I own many of them already, but e.g. IWD2 and NWN I'm missing, and thinking of getting IWD also from GoG just so that I don't have to care about Starforce skit on my IWD: Heart of Winter CD...

SirPrimalform: Hmm, looking at some screenshots it does look slightly nicer in some areas (although weirdly the title screen has been 'painted over' rather than just being a digitised photo like in the DOS version). Now, we all the know that the Amiga's sound capabilities were miles ahead of PCs at the time, but I have a feeling this was ported to the Amiga from DOS. It may or may not have had a sound upgrade.
avatar
timppu: Usually the Amiga versions of DOS games had quite good sounds and music even in games where the does version was pretty much silent or with horrendous beeper sounds. But if I understood right, Mean Streets DOS plays digitized sounds through the PC beeper, so possibly the Amiga versions sound effects and music are the same, but sounds clearer because of using a proper digital-2-analog converter..

There were some exceptions though, IIRC the Amiga versions of early Sierra adventures (King's Quest 1-3, Space Quest 1 etc.) had just as bad CGA graphics and beeper sounds as the DOS originals, ie. they really appeared to be 1:1 direct ports from DOS.

Anyway, I guess I'll take the plunge, ie. get these games from GoG and check the Amiga version. Only Mean Streets apparently appeared outside x86.
You're probably right. Mean Streets does play digitised sound through the internal speaker (even the music is various sections of looped digital audio). This would almost certainly sound much nicer through an Amiga (or Amiga emulator).

Now that I checked the screenshots on MobyGames, the PC VGA version does seem considerably better in general. So maybe there is no point trying the inferior-looking Amiga version, even if it had clearer sounds. I just assumed the Amiga version would look pretty much the same as the DOS version because that was the case with many other ports (but maybe those were mainly Amiga => PC, not vice versa).

The graphics style in the Amiga/Atari ST/C=64 versions of the game look somewhat similar to each other, and different from the DOS version. So probably two different branches made by two different teams or something.

Will I have to get the Radio Theatre extra from the unofficial site?
"Nice, you own all games from this promo.
Have fun and don't forget to check out our next offer."

Picked them all up in the last Tex promo...
These are among the most heavily promoted games on GOG.
As a result, I own them all for quite a while. My wallet thanks you for giving it time to breath a little. :P
As I prefer turn based strategy / fantasy games I do not have any of Texes . They are not on my priority list and recently I've spent too much on GOG so need to do some savings now. If the game was so heavily promoted in the past I think there will be another chance to grab it somewhere in future :D
Excellent promo, have already partaken from years past - but for anyone looking, can't recommend highly enough.

Now if only GOG would go back and look at the DVD version of Overseer...

i have :D
Awesome, the Tex Murphys have been on my wishlist for a long time. I don't own any of them so far, so I definitely would like to get the FMV games. I'm not sure about Tex Murphy 1+2, though. It looks very dated and doesn't seem to be that popular. Is it worth getting for $3?
Yet another Tex Murphy promo Ug...
low rated
Stopped playing boring adventure games 10 years ago, just not interested.

Next weekend, please put these on sale:

1. Nox
2. Vampire Redemption
3. Wing Commander 3

Thanks.
I look forward to sales but thank god for a break this week

Spent wayyyyyyyyy to much here these last 6 weeks - 1 weekend break is good for my wallet
Wow! I was wishing for another Tex Murphy sale, because i missed the last one.
Now i finally bought the bundle.

In the "not so distant" future, It would be great to see some Sierra promos, namely the Gabriel Knight series, Police Quest 1,2,3,4.

Thanks GOG.

Haha, wow. I can't believe you actually said that. That takes some real moxie, or a considerable amount of head trauma. It's hardly necessary to dissect a troll post like this, but...

Well, first of all, these aren't boring adventure games. They're good ones. Nobody gives a damn that you stopped playing adventure games (and now would be an awfully good time to start playing them again), and the idea that adventure games are boring... that would be something called an 'opinion', and believe it or not, you'll find that not everybody shares the same sentiment.

Umm... how do I say this? Don't you think they added Nox and Wing Commander III a little, you know, recently? Very recently? You probably shouldn't expect a sale on a game for at least a month after showing up. Especially games as good as Nox and Wing Commander III. We haven't even had sales on the first batch of EA games yet. Redemption isn't even an EA title, so you're also asking for a sale involving multiple publishers, which doesn't exactly happen all too often.

I hope none of those games go on sale for a year, just to spite you. -_-;

Whew, thanks for responding to that guy's/gal's post. I thought for a moment that he/she would get away freely with saying such sacrilege!
