fisk0: I think Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom is the peak of the storytelling in the series, and the GOG release has the best version of it with DVD quality cutscenes, while Prophecy is the game with the best gameplay, and maybe a better introduction to the series since it's not as heavily tied in to the plot of the previous games, starring a new main character and antagonist.
The Privateer games are really good too, but very loosely connected to the rest of the Wing Commander series.

Technically GOG is still missing one Wing Commander game, Wing Commander Arena from 2007. It was only released on Xbox 360 though, and by all accounts it's not a good game.

The_Blog: Thanks for the quick answer. I think I'll go with Prophecy unless someone has any reason to take an other game.
I would add that the first Wing Commander still holds up really well too, but the GOG version of that is configured a bit weirdly, Dosbox has been set to use the MT-32 sound card which it doesn't actually support, making a lot of sound effects sound wrong, and they have not included the game's original setup program so you can't easily change it yourself.
Is it worth it?
I already own the 3, 4 and Privateer, is there any differences with the other ones?
Huh. Didn't think WC5 would be in a promo this soon. I may snag it with Privateer 2. Don't care for Academy, and I'm not sure about Armada.

Edit: Oh hell. I have to buy them all to get half off? Well, guess I'll keep waiting until Christmas time then. I've got plenty of other games begging to be played. =P

How much does it end up costing if you don't own any?

Yeah I know but I was thinking anyway because I never played any of the series.
Thanks gog! I picked up the ones I'm missing.
Just so you know even I might be wrong on this ok so I just asking for confirmation, anyway:

Can I use a fightstick fo Wing Commander?

I have an Xbox 360 version, I know perhaps it won't work, but I am just asking.

For continuity reasons I would go with WC3 first. Some things in Prophecy would spoil plot in the previous two. Of course I am saying this with no experience in WC1 and ~50% thru WC2. IMO starting during the Kilrathi war is a better entry point than introducing the bugs.

From a gaming standpoint WC3 is when they switched to a more modern visual presentation. 1 & 2 may be a bit of a shock depending on how far you go back. They are closer to the old X-Wing & TIE fighter games from LucasArts.

Meh, this promo is good folks who were around when the WC series was strong and kicking.

Otherwise, I must say the WC franchise has not aged well.

Freespace I & II is infinitely better than the regular Wing Commanders and Egosoft's X saga is infinitely better than Privateer (though I still find Privateer 1 enjoyable).
Sorry, GOG, I won't buy the stinkers I'll bide my time.
For those who don't have any Wing Commander games yet who love a good story and pseudo space-flight mechanics, go ahead and buy this. Privateer 1, WC 3-5 are worth it. The rest of the games? Not so much imho. Well, perhaps WC1, the game that started the whole franchise, just for nostalgia.

Yes, the Freespace series are still worth it today., haven't played the X saga yet.
Couldn't agree more, Magnitus.
