IronArcturus: Thanks for the info! Does it also work with an Xbox 360 controller?
avatar
thornton_s: Yes. and mouse or keyboard.

Turjake: The original was one of my favourite games on Amiga! It's not a real flight simulator, but a very enjoyable game.

I wonder how much they've changed the original's gameplay...
avatar
thornton_s: Very faithful to the original. The strafings just as tricky. The bombing runs are almost identical. The flight 3D engine has been really updated and improved. You now have Multiple camera views and the controls are a lot smoother. And your guns still feckin jam just as easliy.
Okay, sounds good! I'll have to add this one to my backlog at some point. :)
looks cool. Not really interested though.

donsanderson: Always wondered how this works, would Cinemaware have to buy these keys from GOG or would GOG be expected to give them away? Seems a bad deal for someone.
AFAIK, Steam/GOG/Humble/etc. will give free keys to developers.
Which is not at all uncommon, even writers get some free printed copies of their books which they can hand out for free, if they want.

No one really loses there, because most backers won't be buying the game again, so it's not a financial loss to anyone. But OTOH, it works the same way as free game giveaways, and keeps customers with Steam/GOG/Humble/etc.

There are some exceptions of course, like when old games are released by a different publisher than the new one. IIRC, the Coles had to buy their own old games (Sierra) from a GOG sale, so that they could send those as backer rewards to Hero-U backers.
Nice, what a week at GOG! Didn't expect anymore releases.
Great game!! I remember playing the original for many hours non-stop. Such a blast I had.. I have to admit that I didn't know this remake.. it looks good.

Also, since no one commented on the title "Run [...] Aces High", I have only three words to say: BEST TITLE EVER!:-D

DCT: yeah I know Steam gives keys to devs/publishers free of charge so I would take it that GOG would do likewise since it helps generate traffic and business to the site
From the few cases it has happened so far in the past with GOG keys I think GOG are reluctant to do so, or at least have been until recently. Perhaps because they want to control their backend and how many people are on it a bit better. Handing out free keys for games you're hosting can increase the strain on your servers by a fair amount if more and more devs start doing so.

I'd imagine it's only a matter of time till they start doing it more and more though. Would certainly be a *lot* better for them, given that they are about the only place that does *not* sell a DRM-Free version *and* a Steam key of the same game for the same price. If they start handing out GOG keys to more games it's possible it'll become a common thing to see a Steam Key + GOG key on other retailers. As it is Humble is ahead of them on that.
Man, too bad there isn't a Linux version...

yyahoo: There don't appear to be a whole lot of backers on GOG, but I'll go ahead and post this for those whom it may affect.

I emailed Cinemaware and asked them about whether backers would get keys to their choice of digital distributor (whether GOG or Steam) and this was their response:

"We are working on getting keys from either provider, but it is something we cannot guarantee we will get.
As soon as we do and are able to, we will inform and grant these keys to backers, OK?"
avatar
PixelBoy: Well, backers also have access to soundtracks, both original and remake, which seem to be missing from GOG release.

But otherwise the way Cinemaware has handled releasing the game to backers has been disappointing, to say the least, and angered many backers.

I'm happy to have helped this game, but as far as Cinemaware's possible upcoming Kickstarters are concerned, the critical point for me is whether they can give us GOG keys (like all the other game projects) or not.
avatar
yyahoo: Oh, I missed the soundtracks. Well, that's something, even if I'm not a big soundtrack guy...

That said, if you'll note above, I contacted Cinemaware and they are working on getting GOG keys. So, hopefully soon, this will be remedied.
Hello guys!

Thanks for posting here!
As pointed out, backers do get things that regular buyers don't, like their credits in the game, a copy of Wings (Amiga), the game itself (on the platform of their choice), soundtracks, desktop themes and a bunch stuff more of course if you pledge at higher levels.
Of course, when helping crowdfund a project we hope a fan is doing more than just "purchasing a product" - that is not the intent or spirit of crowdfunding. It's all about helping realize a dream and bring a project to market that can then reach many, many more people - which then in turns helps more Cinemaware projects materialize.
And finally, when it comes to pricing (either on GOG or elsewhere) we really do not have complete control over it - promotions, discounts, bundles etc. are a shop's own strategy and it's up to the consumer to decide what they think is best for them. After all, you could chose to wait a few months and get any game for a huge discount at some point...

We hope though, that most of all, you feel the game is fun and provides good value for whatever price you paid for it. We will continue to enhance Wings! and rest assured it will not be the last you will see of it! :)

I'm not really upset about the pricing. I just wanted to get a GOG key from Cinemaware, which is hopefully coming.

Regardless, I find your above statement fascinating. It was always my understanding that the property owner *did* have complete control over whether their product was offered in a promotion or with a discount, etc. There are plenty of games on both GOG (and Steam) that almost never see a discount and I'm pretty sure it's not because GOG simply hates those games and doesn't want anyone to buy them... To think that Cinemaware had no say in whether their game was offered with a discount at release boggles my mind.

Hi there!
We do not have complete control as this pricing must be in agreement with what our publisher is also doing in other portals, retail, etc. Each game/company might handle this differently, but Wings! is also coming to retail (in a box) so pricing must have some kind of compatibility among channels. Hope this helps!

Exactly. I just looked at the Kickstarter and seems the Linux stretch goal wasn't reached.
