Cold steel, colder ale!

Volgarr the Viking, a hardcore 2D side-scrolling arcade action platformer with gallons of blood, extreme bad-assery, and a daring difficulty level, is available 16% off on GOG.com. That's only $9.99 for the first week.

Rise, warrior! Bow to the 16-bit gods of the Arcade'ian Golden Age! Heed Odin's call! You are to become a mythical hero, the stuff of legends passed over goblets of ale at smelly inns, for years to come. Village elders will erect statues in your honor, Viking women will give your name to their firstborn sons, and men of the North will scream Volgarr!!! when storming enemy ranks, to instill dread in their foes' hearts. Of course, if you explode into a bloody fountain of bones and gore, that might not be the case. After all, here, now, you are still just a nameless, hairy, half-naked savage thrown against countless bloodthirsty foes. Can you become the legendary Volgarr the Viking? I dare you.

Volgarr the Viking is an awesome tribute to the most brutal and demanding arcade games of the 80s and 90s. With precise mechanics, simple controls, and challenging difficulty level, combined with pixel-perfect animation and a soundtrack worthy of a truly epic adventure, the game is sure to hold you in its mighty grip for hours on end.

Have your bloody blade ready and become the legendary Volgarr the Viking for only $9.99 on GOG.com!

HiPhish: I just saw TotalBiscuit's video and it kiled all my interest in the game

There are challenging games like Castlevania or Contra, but they are not nearly as hard (except those pseudo-3D stages in Contra, I hate those) as this. I like a good challenge, but this is just pure punishment.
He is bad at those games. Keep that in mind.
Hm. Another punishing platformer? I'm intrigued. It certainly looks quite nice.

Yeah, that convinced me not to buy this game.
You spell it "Volgarr" but on the picture it reads "Völgarr". O and Ö are different letters which are pronounced differently. Just in case you did not know...

Mivas: It reminds me of Golden Axe.

SLP2000: This.

And it's good.
It doesn't remind me of golden axe, just the aspect but that's really all. Way more like Super Ghoul's n' Ghosts in my opinion.
The no-save thing seems way more than a 'difficulty feature' .... more like a "I don't want people finishing my game that fast".

I know, but even so the first level looks more unforgiving than the mid levels of Ninja Gaiden (minus those cheap birds).
Really? The first level is easy, just realize what you did wrong to be killed in every instance. I think the most annoying thing was those snakes, which you need to crouch attack to kill.

I think I'll just leave it at "modern gamers", because I'm not even a player of platformers at all until this one.

I watched the video, and he keeps doing the same mistakes over and over... also, it's only 12 minutes..
I don't think it's that unforgivable, but I never played, so...

F4LL0UT: I don't know what it is but it looks beautiful. O_O

Edit: Lol, just noticed the feature on the gamecard: "support for Dinput and Xinput controllers!" The fact that it's funny shows how sad the truth actually is.

JudasIscariot: I am glad that the feature is there. It lets those of us who don't have a particular controller know that they can still play :). While I play on an Xbox 360 controller, it's good to know I can play the game with, say, a Logitech.
Come on, Logitech gamepad is fully compatible with the XBox360 controller.

(Depending on which Logitech gamepad you are talking about.)

The reality is that DirectInput gamepads are of dying breed, people shouldn't buy more of them. There are other XInput gamepads besides just the MS XBox360 gamepad, too bad though that it may be quite hard to tell from the package whether the gamepad is DirectInput, XInput or even both. I think the Chinese no-name gamepads that look like PS2 rip offs, all the way to the button naming, are still DirectInput. Steer clear of them.

This guy actually knows how to play the game, unlike TB. He clears the first two levels, and the boss battle at the end looks surprisingly easy as the boss is really slow. I believe this game is worth every penny to those who like to be challenged, but checkpoints would be a welcome addition (just one per level, like we had in DKC games, would suffice).
I don't think he read the manual, which explains the double jump thing, downwards stab (how to avoid getting killed by jumping and landing near an enemy), etc.

Also the game is not frustrating at all, which is a sign it's well designed. You die by making mistakes, so dying almost has an addictive quality to it

I don't think the game is THAT hard... sure it's tough, and I die a lot, but I've been making some pretty decent headway with my keyboard (my controller is at home). And you definitely need to utilize the Volgarr's full moveset, otherwise you're gimping yourself.

I wouldn't say it's frustrating by a long shot. The game gels in such a way that you want to give it just one more go. And once you master the timing of the provided moveset it looks pretty sweet in action.
if you look at the good video you see that there is very little to no error involved. A regular person is going to make errors, so the player is *very* good, not indicative of a regular player. That's grat for people who are *really* good at these games. Even TB admitted the game is not unfair, just really hard.

TB played it on the show floor next to the developer, so of course he didn't read the manual. The voice-over was recorded later.

EDIT: We wouldn't even be havin gthis discussion if there was a demo of the game fr people to try it out themselves. What is it with devs these days that they don't want to make demos?

So? He couldn've asked the devs to have a quick look at the manual (if it was ready) before he jumped it it. Either way his argument is pure bullshit, "I'm a busy man and this game is too hard so it disrespects my time".

Youtube reviewers are all casual tossers

Crosmando: ...
TB is not a reviewer and using the word "casual" like that is just wrong (Ghost & Goblins is a casual game compared to PC standards). It is "disrespectful to people's time" in the sens that there is very little margin for error. Take a lok at a game like Castlevania on NES and see how much abuse you can take before dying.
