The Shivah, an original and mature adventure game with a New York Rabbi investigating the killing of an ex-member of his synagogue, now with highly enhanced pixel-art graphics, is available on GOG.com for only $4.99.

For any Jew, it's a great mitzvah to visit the house of a departed acquaintance during the week of mourning--the Shivah, and pay respect to the avels. But when you are a Rabbi, it's more than that: it's a duty. Especially, if the deceased unexpectedly left you a large sum of money, even though you didn't part ways in friendship. If the police suspects you had something to do with a murder, it would be meshugge not to try and clear your name. But when you are a Rabbi, it's more than that: it's a duty. Your synagogue looks up to you, after all. They may like you, or not. They may respect you, or not. They may listen to you, or not, but there must be no doubt in their minds that you are a good Jew. It's natural for any man to ponder upon the nature of morality and reassess the important things in life, when faced with a dark mystery and a gruesome death. But when you're a Rabbi, it's more than that. It's a duty. You have to face your doubts and fears before you help others to do so. Yes, life isn't easy at all. But when you are a Rabbi, it comes with some extra challenges.

The Shivah is a point-and-click title designed by Dave Gilbert of Wadjet Eye Games, one of the modern adventure game power-houses. Initially executed in Adventure Game Studio it received a lot of praise from both gamers and gaming media, despite the simplistic visuals of the original 2006 version. It was welcomed as a mature and thought-provoking experience, as well as an unique insight into the contemporary Jewish culture. Pair that with a gripping, non-linear crime story and you've got a title unlike any other. Now, seven years after its initial release, this intriguing title is making a comeback, in the so called "Kosher Edition", sporting higher resolution pixel-art graphics made from scratch to make the game look as good as we came to expect from Wadjet Eye titles. MP3 soundtrack included!

As Rabbi Russell Stone attend The Shivah of Jack Lauder, and solve the mystery of his untimely death, while facing some of your own demons, for as little as $4.99 on GOG.com.

It's useless flame bait and it needs removed.
And another after that one.

Seriously, the fact that people are able to make themselves post insensitive things like that is just saddening.
That's why people who actually owns the games should be able to review them. I'm sure these poor sobs wouldn't give a penny for this game.
I got the original version of this game during a Wadjet Eye promo years ago. It was very well done and it actually made me interested in their other games.

I really recommend this, though I don't have the remake nor plan to buy it for the moment.
I just noticed that not only can you write reviews for games you do not own, but also just give them a rating? Is that correct? That would make the whole system even more useless, because that means I could e.g. downvote any new release I don't like because I was hoping for a different game ... and without even revealing my name. Really?

We're on top of it, guys.

Tehvenezuelan: So... Anyone see the really offensive review "BillyCrush" posted for this game?
It's gone now. Anyways, It had a big impact as far as I'm concerned. When I saw the game I said " not another mediocre adventure"( I don't like adventures and platformers). After reading that review I'm so intrigued that I wish listed and will certainly buy it. Great going BullyCrush, that's another 5$ I have to spend on games.

Works the same for me - when I see something criticized in a stupid way, I want to try it out for myself :)*
But the review was gone before I could check it :)

*just like IGN review of Deadly Premonition - game Judas shoud play in Let's Play with Judas! :)

Because we don't feel it's right to have reviews that do nothing with the game and are blatantly offensive on an ethnic and cultural level.

I don't mind removing idiotic spam \ troll reviews... just leave those of Jack Keane 2 be :)

I don't think it makes the whole system useless. Most of the games on GOG have been out for years; it's entirely reasonable that people will have experience with them without having bought the game here. And people who *do* buy those games here are often buying things they liked in the past, without necessarily having the time to be able to replay them again *now*, so even having bought the game here is no guarantee of any more knowledge than the reviewer who only owns the discs and played it 10 years ago.

Admittedly, sometimes the system fails, primarily for indies whose pricing flies in the face of established trends here. I'm sure many of the negative reviews for Omerta were based on second-hand knowledge; and the early reviews for Redshirt focused on the ridiculous issue of how big (in MBs) the game was for the price rather than gameplay. There's even one saying:

"I just about bought this game.... looks fun.... but $20? I just can't see it... :("

Obviously that should have been a forum comment, not a review. Thankfully, it's often perfectly clear when people haven't actually played the game, and with time, genuine reviews overwhelm the "no knowledge" ones.

I understand why people get frustrated when the "everyone can review" policy is seen to fail, but I'd hate to see it removed. I think we'd lose more than we'd gain, since most people review in good faith, and that's more important than having to prove you've forked out money on a particular site.

Two things I *would* like to see implemented are a checkbox allowing you to specify that you're reviewing the GOG version of the game (useful knowledge, but not always clear from reviews, could be available to only confirmed buyers) and the spam report button being taken more seriously. There are some reviews that aren't reviews at all - they're ads for buying T-shirts or whatever at other sites. They'll have about 30 people rating them non-helpful (and presumably also reporting them as spam) and yet they're still up. I'll like to see GOG act on those before worrying about where people bought the game they're reviewing. (Obviously first action should be against genuinely offensive reviews, but it seems GOG already has that in hand...)
