The Shivah, an original and mature adventure game with a New York Rabbi investigating the killing of an ex-member of his synagogue, now with highly enhanced pixel-art graphics, is available on GOG.com for only $4.99.

For any Jew, it's a great mitzvah to visit the house of a departed acquaintance during the week of mourning--the Shivah, and pay respect to the avels. But when you are a Rabbi, it's more than that: it's a duty. Especially, if the deceased unexpectedly left you a large sum of money, even though you didn't part ways in friendship. If the police suspects you had something to do with a murder, it would be meshugge not to try and clear your name. But when you are a Rabbi, it's more than that: it's a duty. Your synagogue looks up to you, after all. They may like you, or not. They may respect you, or not. They may listen to you, or not, but there must be no doubt in their minds that you are a good Jew. It's natural for any man to ponder upon the nature of morality and reassess the important things in life, when faced with a dark mystery and a gruesome death. But when you're a Rabbi, it's more than that. It's a duty. You have to face your doubts and fears before you help others to do so. Yes, life isn't easy at all. But when you are a Rabbi, it comes with some extra challenges.

The Shivah is a point-and-click title designed by Dave Gilbert of Wadjet Eye Games, one of the modern adventure game power-houses. Initially executed in Adventure Game Studio it received a lot of praise from both gamers and gaming media, despite the simplistic visuals of the original 2006 version. It was welcomed as a mature and thought-provoking experience, as well as an unique insight into the contemporary Jewish culture. Pair that with a gripping, non-linear crime story and you've got a title unlike any other. Now, seven years after its initial release, this intriguing title is making a comeback, in the so called "Kosher Edition", sporting higher resolution pixel-art graphics made from scratch to make the game look as good as we came to expect from Wadjet Eye titles. MP3 soundtrack included!

As Rabbi Russell Stone attend The Shivah of Jack Lauder, and solve the mystery of his untimely death, while facing some of your own demons, for as little as $4.99 on GOG.com.

AgZarp: There are some "awesome" Jews, but saying "Jews are awesome" as a blanket statement is pretty dishonest of you.
I prefer the term slight comical exaggeration. Considering what a small race they are they produce a lot of awesome people. my small list doesn't even scratch the surface. And I'm a fan of Jewish culture in general.

Johnmourby: race
(Facedesk boom.)

Listen, 1) this is basically as horrible as "i like gays" and "blacks are fantastic" which is basically as horrible as "i hate gays" and "blacks are awful" which is basically as horrible as "i love/hate italians", and 2) one could make a behemotic list of people who are awful and happened to be jewish too. It's all just argh, but, eek, errgh someone please graak.

Yargl.

Wow. I didn't know having positive opinions about a race/culture was such a bad thing, Sure there have been bad Jewish people, Ayn Rand for example. Heck I named Polanski and he had sex with an underage girl!
But I feel the people I named represent a creative passion and intelligence I admire in Jews (Even Polanski).

But if having positive opinions of Jews, Russians, Canadians, Scousers or Japanese is such a bad thing then maybe I should apply this neutral attitude to more things in life. Like not claiming to like some kinds of games over others ;)

Nah. She was awesome! Sure, totally utopian and a little too radical, but still better than 'visionaries' from the other side :)

Manchester and Proud :P

I learned the abbreviation from a movie where there's a line that goes like this:

"If you're not a Manc, you're a wank!"

Indeed!

For anyone else who didn't get the joke, a Scouser is someone who was either born, or lives in Liverpool and a Manc, is well, a resident of Manchester (like I am). It's an old rivalry rooted in both football and the Industrial Revolution.

Well I've met good people from Manchester and admired great people from Liverpool and I see no contradiction :) Just because I admire Jews or Russians or others doesn't mean I'm any kind of racist.

That said Cardiff Forever!

You can't treat people like "categories of games" or like heroic-fantasy races. It just hierarchises whole categories of unknown people based on irrelevant traits, that negate individual différences. It builds up a whole grid of default expectations, subjective interpretations, and confirmation biases that shape unfair attitudes and judgements. It's just the construction, feeding, upholding, strengthening and application of unapologetic préjudices that function the very same way whether "positive" or "negative" - which are actually both sides of the same coin, in all arbitrary glorification of human groups at the expense of others. In short, don't emit individual judgements based on global attributes that say so little about the quality of a person, because you'll lock yourself up in a fiction with devastatingly unfair consequences. This is mankind's worst fallacy, however the forms it takes. Oh boy oh boy oh boy. Just, like,

don't.

So your saying that it's wrong of me to hold any race of people in high regard as it spreads racism, then you insinuate that my race is spreading disgusting insects all over the world.
I can't tell if you're a hypocrite or trying to be funny :/

Also mankind's worst fallacy is "Nothing will ever change. So there's no point trying to make things better". In my opinion anyway.

(also, check the usage of "race", neither judaism nor, uh, cardiff residence, are a "race" - actually nothing human is)
Using "race" to characterize subgroups of humans is a bit off in any case; but for those interested in going deeper beyond simple association into certain elements of jewish heritage, I'd encourage them to start looking at the Cohen Modal Haplotype.

Anyhow, back to the game:
I got it in a prior bundle and was never able to get it to work on my computer. I once again seem to have this game included in a new bundle or other, so I will renew my efforts with this version. I absolutely adored the Blackwell chronicles (although they were far too short, which is the best criticism a game can receive) and I hope this is as enjoyable.
ANYTHING from Wadjet Eye = instabuy for me.
