Retro done right.

Shovel Knight, an action-platformer truly worthy of its NES roots, that delivers fun gameplay, great design, and a tide of memories in perfectly captured 8-bit style, is available on GOG.com for $14.99.

There has been way too many games recently aiming to cash in on our nostalgia without ever delivering what they promise: a real throwback to the classic gaming ideas and authentic retro feeling. Not this time! Here, even the story is perfectly nostalgic. The shovel-wielding hero has come to this land with two goals: to defeat the evil Enchantress and quest for his lost beloved. But, between Shovel Knight and his beloved stands a cadre of villainous knights. These terrible foes, known as The Order of No Quarter, have been dispatched to prevent the hero from reaching the Enchantress, and will pursue their mission at any cost. If you love games with perfect platforming, beautiful art, infectious music, crazy bosses, humor and levity, and real heart… this one is for you!

Shovel Knight is a sweeping classic action adventure game with awesome gameplay, memorable characters, and an 8-bit retro aesthetic. It's a hot mashup of new and old! You play as the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight with a huge quest. He wields a Shovel Blade: a multipurpose weapon whose techniques have now been lost to the ages. Always honest and helpful, Shovel Knight is a shining example of the code of Shovelry: Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly! With classic NES-era platforming gameplay, great humor, excellent level design, and perfectly captured graphical style of old, this amazing little gem offers to take you on a nostalgia trip you won't soon forget.

Prepare to jump, dig, dig-jump, and jump-dig in the amazing limited-palette realm of Shovel Knight, for $14.99 on GOG.com.

GOG really, REALLY needs to try and fight for actual extras in these indie games, or at least offer the same tiered purchases that Steam and Humble Store/Widget do. Why should I buy here when I can go to the developer's website and get a DRM-free download AND a Steam key? Sometimes you have to be critical of the things you love, and I don't want GOG to become irrelevant.

CarrionCrow: There's still a lot that could be brought to the table, by a number of companies. But far too many are worried about the next biggest shiniest thing that has all the substance of a puddle of dog urine. Their stupidity, their loss.
Also a depressing number of great old titles have been bought and rebought due to chains of buyout and acquisition, ending up in the hands of companies that sometimes don't even know what they have, or just as often don't care.

It's a parallel to when Hasbro bought out Avalon Hill, just for the sake of marketing a few of their best-selling titles. The rest of AH's beautiful back catalogue was left to languish, which is borderline criminal in the eyes of people who truly love games.
Yay ! That's exactly what I call an impressive title. I am very curious about the musical score (seems like a remix of a lot of classics).
I will buy it, at some point.
Looks great! But due to market conditions I'll have to wait for a future sale.
Not quite my thing. After looking at the gameplay video, this game reminds me a lot of Super Mario on Nintendo if you take the shovel away. I might actually buy this at some point.

Hope for some classics next week.

I'm with you here. I guess one of the things that might deter gog from doing that is that whenever they decide to go this road, the release threads are filled to the brim with complaints: "These extras should be free bonuses! Why do I have to PAY for extras?" One example that comes to mind would be "Ether One", some people seemed furious at the very idea of offering most of the bonus features in a $10 package (despite the fact that this package included the full soundtrack, which was seperately sold on bandcamp for almost the exact same amount).

much of the Gog customer base will buy it here regardless. many of us don't care about steam keys etc (many indie soundtracks aren't done in house so those are generally sold separately or at additional cost to buyer anyway... if Gog did this you would get people complaining soundtrack should be free anyway. can't win) and buy it here to support Gog

You would buy it here if you like the idea of DRM-free games, but prefer to have your DRM-free library localized in one place, rather then scattered across a dozen different developer's websites.
This actually looks very good. I dig (pun intended) the art style and gameplay, but it also looks rather unforgiving. I'm afraid I would ragequit it after a short while, which would be a shame.
I could not say no to another sweet platform game! Looks wonderful.
Saw some footage during Nintendo's Treehouse thing during E3, and I thought "This game looks awesome, can't wait."

Glad to see this on GOG, definitely a day one for me.

ALREADY on GOG?! Yes! This is awesome!

I'm waiting for the 3DS release. I think it's quite likely, because we got things like Jett Rocket, Steamworld Dig, Gunman Clive, Edge and many other high-profile titles on the 3DS e-shop. But if it doesn't happen within a year or so, I'll buy it here. I want to support GOG (especially because they treat Japanese users a billion times better than Steam does), but I also want to support developers who don't ignore our lucrative market and I want to see the game in 3D and do the Streetpass Arena. Also because native console controllers (not 3rd party USB ones, which tend to be a little lower in quality) are the best for these types of games.

Maybe I'll buy both versions, one for on the go and one for the big screen (well, as big as a laptop can get) because I know that if it does release in Japan, I can count on GOG to release the Japanese installer as well, unlike a certain other famous service.
That actually looks pretty damn cool, I like the authentic 8-bit look.

If it's not there now, it should be there before the end of the day. I'm a Kickstarter backer and I was playing it last night. It plays beautifully on the 3DS. Not much in the way of 3D, but it's a weird thing to do 3D on a 2D game anyway.

I can heartily recommend this game. I really wish that Shovel Knight moved a little faster horizontally but other than that it plays like butter. The music is good, the dialog is funny and there's a Troupple. A giant trout mixed with an apple. Really not much to say after that.

edit: Just realized you are in Japan. I have no clue on the Japanese release, sorry.
