With the powers of nature in your hand and the Blue tribe following, will you become the omnipotent entity?

With great power comes great responsibility and with small price comes great value--combine these two and you’ll get a GOG.com exclusive Populous™: The Beginning, a 3D Strategy game with almighty strength, released for only $5.99 right here on GOG.com.

The third part in the series, the first one in full 3D, Populous: The Beginning places you in control of a female shaman and her tribe. You need to battle your way through 25 planets and defeat the rival Dakini, Chumara, and Matak tribes for dominion over the solar system. Grow in followers, grow in strength and unleash the earth-shattering powers to wreak havoc and control your tribesman. Build your forces, annihilate the non-believers, and finally become the ultimate almighty ruler of the Populous universe.

Execution of Populous: The Beginning is quite impressive: each scenario sports a different richly-detailed small world, and the engine accurately represents the fact that you are on a globe, with curved surfaces and an effective horizon. The creators of Populous and Dungeon Keeper packed some clever ideas, fun-to-play gameplay, 3D graphics, and sweet multiplayer into a perfect cure for gamers with a god complex. If you like real-time strategy games, this is one of the most innovative and well-designed you’ll be ever likely to play, especially when it’s only $5.99, available now on GOG.com

keeveek: Expansions were made mostly by different companies. Maybe this is why EA didn't decide to write agreement for them with GOG.com , because EA hasn't secured all the rights for them?

When EA bought Bullfrog maybe they didn't buy rights to the material that was made by other companies.
Actually, only a selected few, if at all, of the expansions were made by outside teams. Some games were still sold with expansions after EA aquired them.

GOG dropped the ball on this one.

Pheace: Either way it's a shame to see all these old games released in an incomplete state like this. (unavoidable or not)
Yeah, I miss them too. But both GOG.com and EA understand how including expansions would be profitable for them, so I wouldn't accuse anybody of badwill (EA) or laziness (GOG.com). I'm sure they do what they can to bring them back..

But it's in the best EA's interest to include them here, too.
Do you think they'd rather earn less money than more money? Or they don't give a damn?

Oh my GoG this game is one I've been wanting for ages but I've always struggled to get the damn thing working. Shame it doesn't have the UK expansion but oh well. Instant purchase!

TAKA!

Fred_DM: 1. make another deal for all the missing expansions.
2. put them up for sale at a reduced price point (2.99 or 3.99), and offer complete editions at a price point slightly above the standard edition of the game (7.99).
3. ???
4. profit.
This.
This is the game I've been hoping for ever since the EA deal was first announced! I still have my CD copy of it but have struggled to get it working on modern computers. More than happy to buy it again through GOG :)
Shoka!! :D
The only Populous game that I like, one of my favorite RTS's of all time.

What if EA did not allow the expansions during the actual negotiations? Assuming that GOG can only put out what EA offers or they get nothing.

SimonG: My guess is that GOG screwed up the licensing deal. They simply forgot the expansions in the original deal and now they can hardly pay again for something that they can't sell us.

A first step towards this has been made with the introduction of the "premium editions".
Worrying.

It's simple (at least in my head). GOG negotiated with EA about the games. They came to an agreement. The contract includes all the games we've seen so far. Successfull legal team comes home. GOG uploads Syndicate. Fans ask for American Revolt, GOG has a "oh fsck" moment and goes back to EA. EA willing to also license the expansions, but wants money for those to (obviously). GOG can't or won't do it because there is no profit to get.

You will notice that those games that have an expansion are "Gotys" (or what ran as GOTY in the '90s) like black isle. But back than those were few, expansions and core games were usually bundled and not "merged" like nowadays. Therefore GOG couldn't aquire a GOTY license and they probably thought that Syndicate would include American Revolt.

Why wouldn't they? Maybe the original deal was to expensive for GOG and they only opted for the cheaper option?

SimonG: Sure, the community will just love that....
so?

no doubt there would be a lot of people who'd end up buying the expansions. so what if some whiners would dislike having to pay extra for the expansions?

if the only options are either not getting the expansions at all, ever, or having to buy them separately, then i'd rather have to buy them separately.

possible. but then there was that reaction of a guy working for EA who was surprised that the expansions weren't included, so who knows? GOG haven't been clear as to who is to blame, either.

are you kidding?!? the premium editions are 'premium' only compared to the editions sold elsewhere. they don't have any extra content but they come DRM-free and with plenty of extras like artbooks, guides, etc. that's what 'premium' means on GOG.

and why would having to pay a little more for expansions be 'worrying'? when you go to your favourite game shop, does the standard edition of a game cost as much as the Complete or Gold or GotY edition? of course not. more game costs more money.

I don't know. You see, every GOG.com EA game so far is 5.99 . If EA was really so much about the money, we would see them for 9.99

Or for 9.99 with the expansions.

But they all are for 5.99. Not a single other company so far did that - to sell their games for the lower price point.

We've been through this already.

Objection!
I don't care for the expansion (never new it existed before you guys pointed it out anyways). So I'm all for gog.com releasing it at a later time or not at all for that matter. The game is fun on its own, that's what counts for me.

The game already went to my wishlist and will be bought as soon as my finances allow it :).
