Voices in the mist, secrets among the rocks.

Montague's Mount, a chilling trip to a dark Irish coastal island in search of your memories, sanity, and meaning, is available for Windows and Mac OS X on GOG.com, for only $9.99.

The mixture of cold Atlantic water and coarse sand in your mouth brings you back from unconsciousness. The wreckage of a boat’s hull that surrounds you, leads you to a solitary assumption; your vessel has been torn apart by the submerged rocks. The secrets of the island must be uncovered if you are ever going to find a way off. Where is everyone; is the island really uninhabited; what is lurking within the isolated caves; and what is that building on top of Montague’s Mount?

Montague's Mount is an atmospheric first-person perspective horror game, that draws its thrills not from cheap tricks but ambiance and narrative. If you played Dear Esther and thought it could use a story and some more interactivity, here's what you bargained for. The game presents an intriguing and haunting narrative through the protagonist's comments (voiced by Derek Riddell), notes, and pieces of text. It's worth noting, that Montague's Mount might be the first game to extensively use the Gaeilge language, native to Ireland. With lots of intriguing puzzles, immersive gameplay, and chilling atmosphere, this title is a must have for all mystery and horror fans.

Do you think you can face the mysterious island's madness and terror without losing your own sanity? We dare you to explore Montague's Mount, for only $9.99 on GOG.com.
Looks creepy.
As I stated in my previous post in the Pre-order thread

the complete lack of extras brings the value of this title down
Just looked at the list of languages....irish isn't included, which is ironic when you consider the "blurb"....The first game to explore and promote the Irish language (Gaeilge).

It's included but in a different way :P

As you read signs, you'll see them in their actual Gaelic spelling with movie-style subtitles :)

Okay, first impressions so far:

- Very atmospheric. Graphics are appropriately dark and murky. Sound/Music does an excellent job.

- Very good voice acting, but so far I've only heard it in the intro.

- Well-done scary moments - no cheap scares, but a well-done strange scene that sent shivers down my spine even though nothing particular actually happened..

- Gaeilge texts are a nice idea, but they aren't voiced, which is a pity. If I want to look at Gaeilge texts, I can just search the net for them - but I'm most curious about the pronunciation, especially since (if I remember correctly) written Gaeilge uses standard characters in a very non-standard way. Unfortunately the game doesn't seem to want to satisfy my curiosity so far. It just displays lots of Gaeilge words when I look at things, which I then probably pronounce completely wrong with my inner voice ... which is a strange way of promoting a language. ;)

- Not much in terms of convenience for the player. No volume controls, no way to separate the volume of voice/sound/music. No way to save the game, though I can apparently restart at places I've discovered previously. No way to access the options while playing (you have to quite the game to access the main menu, and then can't resume). Subtitle font is too small on large resolutions and can't be configured. Needs polishing.

- Controls are configurable, and task switching works well (sound gets muted when the game loses focus), which makes the lack of a save feature a bit less annoying.

- Weird mouse problems. Sometimes the game stops to register my mouse movements, so I can't look around any more, but I can still walk in all directions - I just can't turn. Right-clicking seems to fix this. Odd.

Nevertheless, my first impression is positive, as the atmosphere and environment are nicely done. Let's see how it plays out. :)

Hello there,

i just bought the game and it looks really nice. I always loved the myst series and this is like something myst combined with dear esther. The atmosphere is really great, but i didn't play much yet because i'm missing a feature: I've read a lot about this game supporting the Oculus Rift. Since i have a Dev Kit, i was hoping i could play it in VR mode when the game comes out, but i can't find any Oculus Rift option in the game. Will it come later with a patch or do i have to activate it with a console command or in a configuration file?
The atmosphere is good with this game, however, there are quite a few technical issues, just like Psyringe said, I've also seen some camera problems, where you "teleport" from the character's view to the top of a building, and no, it's not a cinematic effect.

The game gets a bit choppy at times too, and there is some sound stuttering; it really surprised me, I usually play games on medium to high graphical settings, but I've had to turn it down to the lowest with this one.

That's just like living in Ireland! All the street signs and a lot of other signs have both Gaelic and English text.

That should be interesting, I wonder will the subs just be anglicised versions of the name or an actual translation?

eg a town called Ballina (anglicised name), Beal an Atha (gaelic name), Mouth of the Ford (actual translation).

The subtitles are actual translations, which works well since the location names on the signs are sufficiently descriptive.

For example, you'll see a sign with "Fána Uí Mhaolagáin" written on it. Clicking on it shows the name "Mulligan's Slope" in the subtitle. Another example: "Trá an Iascaire" -> "Fisherman's Beach".

Cool, thanks for the clarification :)

Thanks for the feedback, sounds worth playing - I like that it seems to successfully avoid cheap scares and manages to build the right atmosphere, pity the Gaeilge words/ texts aren't voiced, the pronounciation would be a very interesting aspect of the game for me.

Curious to see if the dev will show up here.
If not, you might want to consider contacting the dev over at the Montague's Mount site or on Indiedb if you have an account.
Would be interesting to hear from him about the points you made.

I have played through the entire game now. I did enjoy the atmosphere, and the technical problems and limitations did not affect me much. The puzzles were engaging and not too difficult, though they rarely make sense in the game world, there's no logical explanation why these puzzles would be there and why they even work. There's not much of a narrative, but the few bits that are there, do enhance the atmosphere, and the voice acting is pretty good, even though it's just a handful of solemn monologues.

There's one important aspect thought which, I believe, should really have been mentioned before. The game is not complete. The story does not come to a conclusion. It stops right in the middle, and then there's an outro with the very clear message "Concluding in 'Liberation', out on PC (etc.) soon".

That's a bit of a letdown, especially since GOG seemed to make a point of _not_ releasing incomplete games before. "The Raven", "Cognition", or the Telltale games, were only released on GOG after all episodes were available. It's a bit disheartening that this game was released in an incomplete state with a rather terrible cliffhanger at the end.
I'm enjoying it so far. The atmosphere is great and I have a thing for stormy game environments (if there's ever a weather cheat in games, i make it as rainy as possible for as long as possible, heh). It feels like Dear Esther but with an actual purpose thanks to its adventure game elements.

Psyringe is right on the money with it's shortcomings like volume control/savegames/having to exit the game to go into options (havent had the mouse issue yet, though), they're only niggling issues but there's enough of them to be a little annoying when I want to make use of them.

I definitely agree that I'd love to actually HEAR the Gaelic as well since I know the pronunciations can be quite different to the text. I may be across the other side of the world but that language has always fascinated me. I'm guessing they didn't do this to keep the solitary atmosphere going, so maybe it would make a nice addition to a new game+ type of thing if it was to ever get added.

awww crap, there goes my enthusiasm. I'm reminded of Deus Ex:The Fall, that cuts off abruptly part way through the story with a "to be continued..." too. I now happily tell the PC/Console users who are angry at no PC/Console release this which gives them a giggle.

To be honest without this being mentioned (there's no mention of this on MM's GOG page as there's no mention of the same for the fall on the ios app store) I find it quite disingenuous of whoever is in charge of telling us this. If it's episodic then we should know, if it's unfinished then we should know.
