Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving.

Evoland, a console-style RPG that starts off as very basic 8-bit(ish) game and evolves to become more advanced and complex as you play it, is available 10% off on GOG.com. That's only $8.99 for the first week!

What makes a console-style action-RPG? This is a concept that has been evolving immensely over the years. So, why don't we take all that defines--and used to define--this genre and put it in one game? Why don't we make the player observe the evolution of gameplay-types, ideas, and visuals, as he progresses further in the game? Why not give him or her the chance to upgrade the game itself, from within the game? Intriguing, right? Well, that's exactly what Evoland is about.

Evoland is a concept game, but unlike many other concept games it offers much more than gameplay based on a gimmick. The story that the game tells you in its unique way is alone interesting enough to make it well-worth playing. The fact that in this single game, you're getting the whole history of console-style action-RPGs in a nutshell can be treated just as a bonus feature. In the end, though, you might find that the main drive for you is to find just one more upgrade-chest and find out how it will affect the gameworld. With many aesthetics and mechanics tightly packed together, waves of nostalgia passing as you play, and a high level of polish, this original title is something you should really check out!

Get upgrading! Start with upgrading your computer with a fresh copy of Evoland, for only $8.99 on GOG.com. The discount will last until Thursday, April 11, at 10:59AM GMT.

keeveek: Oh yeah, that's true. And I would be 9 bucks closer to dehydration because of lack of beer! :P

Fenixp: Well, hate to break it to you buddy, but water is cheaper and hydrates better.
Water is cancerogenic.

You need to move away from Chernobyl :-P

Gievre: 78mb just seems really tiny. :\

xyem: Pff.. you think that's tiny?

See this screenshot?

It's the same filesize (~90kb) as the game it is a screenshot of.
That is so amazing that it almost motivates me to actually read and study my algorithm books. Seriously though, whoa :D

Yes, it almost makes optimization intriguing.

Aaaaalmost :-P

johnki: In case anyone, like me, was wondering about a more "official" time frame, the developer says it takes around 4 hours to beat the game and around 6 hours to reach 100%.
That is pretty short... guess I wait for a sale in that case.

I've actually found algorithms and optimization to be one of the most interesting things I've studied. Too bad I'm not some brainy guy that could just figure that stuff out without any work :p

I mean, come on, a movie is around 10 bucks nowadays isn't it? And they usually take less than 2 hours, so why are people willing to spend that kind of money on a 2 hour movie but not that kind of money or less on a 6 hour game? Especially when most movies I watch are been-there-seen-that films or absolute garbage and most games you can play again. If you want to see a movie again, guess what, another 10 bucks :)
...
I agree with you. But I think, the comparison with a movie is not appropriate. You don't pay 10 buck only for the movie/content, but also the seat in a movie theater (think of all the technical equipment there) and its atmosphere. Moreover there is also the experience you make with your peers going there (including peer pressure for spending 10 bucks).
The comparison would be fine, if you were going with your peers to an equally (technically) equipped place in order to play games with them.
Hm, wouldn't it be cool playing games in a theater with all the professional equipment...

I just played through that demo and it does look absolutely incredible. This really is fascinating and I am utterly impressed.
Does anybody have an idea of how long this game is?

Years ago, I used to play Wii games on the big university classrooms. Grab some friends, sneak into the class, put all tables against a corner, switch on the big screen projector, and play. It was awesome.

Does that count?
The game really does look good, and like many here I like good stories or just plain fun gaming over artistic style. So this game really does appeal. Especially as the demo really did remind me of playing the old Nintendo games on the GameBoys.

As to those who feel the price is still high at $9 for a 'short' game just remember that you want to earn a decent wage for what you do day in day out. In the gaming industry they have to make their money back on their development time quickly before the next big thing is out to steal their thunder. In a few months it might have a sale, but until then the price looks quite decent.
I will most likely pick this up tomorrow. I could use another shorty (I too own a rarely-touched copy of Oblivion). It might cheer me up after having my apartment broken into and my laptop stolen last week.
I am not really into Zelda-type action, especially the health system (I prefer HP system for the health), but I also saw some turn-battle in the trailer. Looks nice. But I guess wishlist for now.
