I'm afraid I'm a PC believer, the last system I owned and played that wasn't a PC was Nintendo 64..yeah Mario Cart was awesome...that was some 11 or so years ago....Where's mah cane?! ;P Anyways if I had a playstation, I think it would be pretty much all Final Fantasy games for me for the most part...I loved those back in the day, and probably still would...well maybe one day I'll break down and buy a PS1...maybe next decade.. ;)
Would also love it if GOG got Final Fantasy 7 here...I think it's time to vote for it..to the wanted page everyone! :D

Luisfius: Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, Tactics
Dragon Warrior 7
Silent Hill
Xenogears
Star Ocean 2
Legend of Dragoon
Parasite Eve
Vagrant Story

The last two are only owned on PSN for the PS3, though.
This. Excellent set of games, Luisfius ^_^
Not enough R-Type in this thread. Future Cop was nice too, although way too short.
I bought a PS1 from ebay a couple years ago that came packaged with a bunch of games. They were mostly sports games that I didn't care about. In fact only one was a game that I intended to play, Chrono Cross. The reason I chose that auction was because I could get the system and a game I wanted for less than the game generally went for alone.

The games that I have that I actually care about are:

Chrono Cross: Still have yet to start. Wanted to finish Chrono Trigger on my DS first, though got side tracked

Final Fantasy Anthology (5 and 6): Kept the 16 bit SNES graphics for both games. FFVI along with Chrono Trigger are two of the prettiest looking games that were made for the SNES, in my opinion.

Final Fantasy VII: This needs no introduction. Started it, but have since decided I want to play through the series in order, so putting it off till I get through the first six.

Final Fantasy VIII: Seen mixed reviews, but between my DS and PS1, I have the first 9 of the numbered series.

Final Fantasy IX: Really pretty graphics. Haven't played it much though.

Metal Gear Solid: Can't decide if this is a game or a movie with all the long cut scenes. Still good.

Vagrant Story: Notice a Squaresoft theme to my PS1 collection?

Do not, I repeat, do not, touch FF2 (and possibly 3). There's a reason neither were localized until years later. MAJOR grindfests.

What he said. Pure grindfest. Better to start off with FF6.

No need to play FF series in chronology order. Each game is standalone and has separate story.

Honestly, if I'm going to recommend newbie to FF series, I'm going to give them either FF7 or FFX since they're good for beginners.

Other than the fact that Tidus makes you wish, REALLY HARD, that Auron was the protagonist.

Yeah, that's how I felt. Tidus was kinda too immature and adolescent whereas Auron is badass motherfucker. I was like, damn it Auron should have been main character. :(

Spoony sums it up pretty well.
When i hacked my psp I had thrill kill bushido blade 1 and 2(originals) oddworld 1 & 2 original and the resident evil series on it....

The Wutang game was also pretty decent...

After selling that like a year ago I only have martian gothic unification but havent got around to playing it....

I have a horrible retro console craving atm, and my friend recently rebought an xbox and Ive done the same but a crystal one with 3 pads and 20 games for £30 seemed to good to miss out on.....

Guardian Heroes uncoming XBL release stopped me from getting a Saturn recently and I have a dreamcast with like 30 games I havent got around to playing....

Thinking of getting an amiga again as well, Though may just cheat and get an emulator...

I also did that "play all FF games through" when I bought FF7 and FF8 for PC (FF2jap, FF3jap and FF4jap with fanbased translations; I think I skipped FF: Mystic Quest, as it is a mere spin-off, right?)

I think I still enjoyed FF2jap and FF3jap quite a bit, IMHO they weren't too bad considering their age. I think those two were quite different from each other, ie. one of them concentrated on a story, while the other seemed to have no other story than "group of would-be adventurers drop into a hole on the ground, and start an adventure from there...". At least I didn't consider them to be worse than e.g. the first Final Fantasy game on NES.

But as said, there didn't seem to be any real reason to play the old FF games before FF7, other than seeing how the series has changed over the years.

This PS1 discussion has given me an urge to go through my PS1 game collection and check which games I actually own. For example I'm not sure if I have e.g. Vagrant Story, I think I bought it at some point because it sounded like an interesting RPG (but never really played it, story of my life).

I'm actually near the end of FFIV (FFII in the US), the DS remake version, which is the original difficulty. The version that was originally localized in the US was easier from what I read, but I am enjoying it. And really, the reason I want to play them in order is to see how the series evolved. While the stories for each are separate, each game added new mechanics and increased the depth of the series.

When I play games, especially older ones, I try to not judge them on modern games. I am interested in how games evolved. For the FF games, my collection ranges across my DS and PS1

FFI and FFII I have on the Dawn of Soul GBA cart. (I have a DSlite with the GBA slot). I also have FFI on the Wii's VC, though I think some of the mechanics upgrades that the Dawn of Souls version adds make the game more fun.

FFIII I have as the DS remake, as I do with FFIV. I haven't really played III at all, but I am almost to the final boss in IV and I really liked IV.

FFV and FFVI I have on the FF Anthology PS1 collection. These are straight ports and translations of the SNES originals.

And then I have VII, VIII and IX for my PS1 as well.

I do have a few of the spin offs as well, namely 4 heros of light and revenant wings on my DS. I have also considered getting Mystic Quest on the VC at some point.

And I also have to say I disagree that there is no point to playing anything before VII. Many fans of the series consider FFIV and FFVI to be two of the strongest games in the series. Also, FFVI is, in my opinion, much prettier than FFVII.
