So, it took like what, half a year for people to notice that some of the previous FLACs were converted from a lossy format? And not even the GOGers who claim that the difference is totally audible noticed that before today? Ouch...
For me lossless is not that important but GOG having the soundtracks of many games included is one of reasons I love to spend my money here. I'm quite willing to pay $6 for a game I already own (i.e. boxed version) if it has fantasic music and I can get it here.

And I actually listen to the soundtracks, mostly when doing kitchen work or household chores. Nothing like defeating the Ginormous Pile of Squalid Dishes (undead, level 40, causes fear, restistant to water magic, immunity to mind magic) with the right battle tunes.

chean: the only explanation I can think of is that the master source files used were already lossy without the person converting it realizing that fact. :/
My explanation is that GOG asked the publisher(s) to provide FLACs, publisher instead of discussing how nonsensical that is knowingly converted whatever files were available to FLAC and sent them to GOG. GOG doesn't have the expertise to tell lossless and lossy audio apart (just like 99,999% of all audiophiles) so GOG was happy and released it that way.

This actually made me laugh. :D

tfishell: Do you have any other examples? I find it hard to believe the GOG staff wouldn't have some understanding of this.

Choosername: Had to go through all of the games i have... took a while but... there were more that weren't lossless:

Desperados
EDNA & HARVEY: THE BREAKOUT
Ether One
Heroes of Might and Magic IV
Jade Empire
KRUSH KILL 'N DESTROY XTREME
Stalker - Clear Sky
Stalker - Call of Pripyat
Heh, well, good thing people don't specifically purchase games for their soundtrack.

So it took like 3 minutes after i dowloaded the Jack Orlando FLAC files (since they were after all composed by Harold Faltermeyer) to load them up and see they weren't lossless. I haven't bothered with any of the other music until now so there's the reason for not mentioning them until now.
The point being that it's false advertising. But then again, perhaps you drive around in what you THINK is a BMW, but in reality is... ;)
Seriously, it's an easy enough thing to check before adding to the bonus stuff. There is freeware around for that, SPEK being one.

Yep, the Two Worlds FLACs are definitely MP3-sourced. :(
I really want GOG to offer real lossless FLAC files without a sudden frequency cutoff IF that's not in the original recording. Thanks GOG, please add more! ;-)

Hi,

Thanks for the feedback regarding these OSTs. I actually do know about Spec but I didn't double check the original files. So, for that, I do sincerely apologize.

The only solution I have as of right now is to remove the offending OSTs labelled as FLAC while keeping the MP3 versions.

Probably best to remove the lossy FLACs to reduce useless download/storage size bloat (and since anyone could make their own from the MP3s if they really needed to for some reason), but please don't give up including actual lossless FLAC soundtracks when possible. It's really nice to have them from an archival point of view and while I'm not a super-audiophile, I do have a nice pair of headphones/headphone amp that it would be fun to try listening on. :)

Please do. I'm definitely a defender of lossless FLAC but lossy FLAC is just confusing and as others have mentioned, unnecessary file space.

Oh, we're not giving up on FLACs by any means, no :) I just need to fix my own mistake which will entail takong all of the available FLAC soundtracks through SPEK and removing the lossy ones.

Again, I am really sorry about this and I'll make sure to be more vigilant about this kind of thing.

Please let us know which FLAC soundtracks were removed.

I haven't removed any but I will let you know as soon as I remove the offending ones :)

I won't get around to this until Monday since this is looking like a major undertaking and it will be easier to check everything at work :)

That's why I love GOG so much. You actually care for your customers, admit mistakes, fix them and learn from that to increase the overall quality in the long term.

So far it's these 3 offenders:

Jack Orlando
Knights and Merchants
Two Worlds
DESPERADOS: WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE
Disciples II
Heroes 4
Jade Empire
KKND 1
MDK2
Mob Rule

Two Worlds's OST is quite odd as it shows portions of it hitting the 22 KHz barrier but it's nothing compared to Earth 2140's FLAC OSTso I removed the Two Worlds FLAC OST.

edit: posted the full list of offending FLAC tracks removed. If you happenacross anymore of them, let me know but I think that's all the bad ones :)
