When it comes to an rpg with a nice plot, The witcher series are great.
Point & Click adventures with a great story and music I recommend: The longest journey. Also if you're more into detective, the blackwell series is a nice touch. Broken sword is also a great point & click adventure.

Also, i strongly suggest Battle for Wesnoth. It's a TBS game, highly moddable and freeware:

Everyone seems to have mentioned the classics, so I'll go a little out of GOGs realm and suggest you to play Mafia (the first one). It was made in 2002.

It's the usual mafia stuff - rivaling families, friends die, enemies die (slightly more common that the previous), respect, betrayal and all that jazz. Nonetheless, it was a very enjoyable game with an immersing story.

Does it need to be modded to be enjoyable?

If you're talking about Battle for Wesnoth, no, it doesn't. You just go to that site, download the latest version, and play. It has tons of campaigns and maps from the get-go, so mods are really just an extra. A huge extra, because the community is large and very active. You can get mods for pretty much anything through an in-game downloader that is very safe.
Just fyi: the games should work well, but if there are technical issues, be sure to check out the game's specific forum (under the Community button, also) for help. (Of course, Support is available, but it takes them longer to get back to you, usually.)

Anyway, here are some of my own games I'd recommend (feel free to check out YouTube before purchasing, if you do become interested in any of these):

Rayman 2 - Classic awesomesauce platformer, one of only a few games I can truly call FUN (I think), up until near the end when things get very tough. (I beat the game a long time ago, but can't do it today.)

Postal 2 - I would not recommend this for everyone as it can be incredibly gory, but the freedom and oddly-charming open world is great. Plus, there are some lol moments, and you really don't HAVE to kill anyone (at least in the main game).

Beneath a Steel Sky (freebie!) - fun point and click adventure with memorable characters and voice-acting (love Joey). I did have to get a walkthrough for it eventually.

Beyond Good and Evil - fun world to explore and interesting missions. Good soundtrack, too.

Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project - 2.5D platformer. Great action in the gory Duke tradition. :P

Far Cry - Difficult but well-made FPS. Story is interesting but pretty "out-there". Crappy voice acting. :P

Unreal Gold - It's an absolute shame GOG doesn't offer this brilliant soundtrack legally here. I've had to listen to and download songs from YouTube and other places.

You should also try the might and magic series.. especially MM6 and MM7, since the previous titles may be too old. Also MM8 and 9 are not as good as the previous titles imo..
I vote with Planescape Torment.

It is my favourite game ever made. The story is compelling and it's highly replayable. Every time I played it I learned something in the tale I had not seen before.

It was ahead of it's time both in voice acting, characterization of NPCs and plots/subplots.

An hour into it and the graphics won't matter.

However, you do need to understand how D&D strategy works with teams of NPC's, each with different fighting capacities to play it through. Once you've established that skill--it has the best story IMO, bar none.

If you're English isn't strong, the walls of text might be somewhat discouraging, though.
From GOG's current weekend promo, i recommend Sacred:Gold and the Patrician games.
Since good story is a must: Betrayal at Krondor

It's a RPG that takes place in Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia.

Hi and welcome,

Anachronox is the game you want.
I know this game is becoming my mantra, but I just can't recommend it enough. ^^

I'd like to recommend Little Big Adventure 2.
Music (!), story, character, gameplay, adventure, you name it, this game got it all!

+1 to Torment, Gothic 1 and 2, Anachronox, Broken Sword (1) etc. :)

dotommi: First I would like to apologize for my english. I'll try my best with it.
Well this is the situation. I bought my first PC in 2005. Up until now I haven't played any games released pre 2005 because I thought I wouldn't be able to enjoy them because of old graphics. But now I got disciples 2 for a very reasonable price. I decided to give it a go, and damn it is most likely one of the best games I have every played. I then tried a game called Lands of Lore and it is simply AWESOME.

This made me realize that all these years, I have been avoiding older games for some silly reasons.

I would appreciate it alot if you people could give me some advice fot what (old) games I should definitely play.

I would most like enjoy a game with:
- Interesting/enjoyable story ( this is a must)
- Memorable characters
- Good soundtrack
- A party based roleplaying game would be nice

So far I have decided to buy:
- Baldur's gate series
- deus ex
- age of wonders series
- planescape torment
- arx fatalis

I know there are a lot of revies out there I could read, but I'm one of those people who doesn't wan't to be spoiled with the story so I'm a bit afraid to read those reviews.
You can skip Arx Fatalis and Age of Wonders for a bit, use the money on the following instead:
Arcanum
Sacrifice
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Fallout
Fallout 2

Most people on here are going to tell you how wonderful Baldur's Gate is, and it is good, it's just when put up against the list above, it is found lacking. Your picks of Deus Ex and Planescape: Torment are spot on.

EDIT: Others have mentioned both Gothic and Dungeon Keeper, yes, these games are excellent, but are not without some serious flaws. Once you've played through the greats have some fun with them, their good qualities easily make up for the warts, but they definitely have some issues.

I'd ask the TC how they feel about particularly difficulty or frustrating challenges, cause "Giants: Citizen Kabuto" looked like an awesome game right up until I hit an area I've never beaten and have since stopped playing.

In any event, why doesn't someone explain more about the Might & Magic/HOMM games, because I've been kinda curious about them, as well. I remember them from the SNES days and such, but I could only play games I rented at the time and not all of these things were available.
Thank you very much for your replies.

I have now realized that there are far more "good old Games" than what I expected ( about 40 titles on my wishlist).

After I finish Disciples 2 and Lands of Lore I think I'll go for quest for glory and some other game not yet decided ( I tend to play 2 games at a time).

A question. Ultima and MIght & magic series. Are the games in those series direct continuation, story wise. Or can I start for example from Might & magic 4 and still be able to understand what is going on in the game even if I haven't played the previous titles?
