We've been announcing this to all and sundry, but if you still didn't know - The Witcher Enhanced Edition is now available on GOG.com! And because, we here at GOG.com like to stir things a little, so to show you how much we love The Witcher franchise we’re running a two week promo starting now.

Before venturing into [url=http://www.gog.com/tw2]The Witcher 2 world and continuing Geralt’s epic story, stop by and check out how it all began with the award winning CD Projekt RED's foray into PC game development. The Witcher is an action-RPG, based on a best selling fantasy saga written by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski. The game features the titular witchers who are monster hunters for hire with supernatural powers. You will be controlling Geralt, one of the witchers, in the rich, deep and enthralling medieval fantasy world created by Sapkowski. Starting the game, Geralt remembers nothing. Kaer Morhen, the last remaining keep of the witchers, was attacked by a mysterious organization, and although the attack has been repulsed the secret recipe for the mutagen, a substance required to create more of your kind, has been stolen. You know what you have to do right? To give you a tip, we'll say you will be fighting ferocious monsters with the help of a revolutionizing and award winning combat system and saving damsels in distress.

During the next two weeks we have a special promo and The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director’s Cut is available for you with a 50% discount and will cost you only 4.99$! Can you really resist such great deal?
I think this is the fastest purchase I have ever made on GOG.

AkiA: Now I have three copies of the Witcher 1. :P
Since we are already bragging, I got four :P (Retail, Impulse, Steam, GoG - were there any more? :) )

Legacy: Can we get an option to not have everything happen at once? I could imagine if this happened on someone's laptop with a single 4200 RPM drive and a small amount of RAM requiring frequent swapping to the page file. The downloader would probably bring the machine to its knees...
avatar
jimbob0i0: You can do this in the options already... you can set the number of simultaneously stuff to run... if you have an older slower drive then it can be set to just a single thread if need be (in which case it would behave like the old downloader in most respects)....
That just limits the number of connections which is kind of trivial compared to the other things going on. It was also combining every 2gb into a bin file, and as soon as that bin file is put together, it starts CRC checking it while simultaneously starting to read and combine more chunks that haven been downloaded into another bin file. There's no option to change that behavior.
I bought it today to show support for the idea of new or relatively new games drm-free, despite the fact that I don't play that much anymore. If only you weren't the only ones showing this kind of respect for your customers... Very well done gog, thanks.

TheCheese33: Word of advice for those about to jump in...
The first few acts of this game are fucking garbage. Give it time, though, and it gets good. Really, really good.
The only part I didn't like was the swamps. Everything else in that act was good, but I dreaded going to the swamps. It gets tiresome having to kill drowners over and over to get anywhere.

The rest of the game is awesome. I liked Act 1 and everything.

I was all set to stick to a spartan games spending budget this year. That is until you guys at GOG went and put up some fantastic games at fantastic prices.

Lo and behold I've just gone and purchased The Witcher!

Arteveld: I hope the GOG Downloader joins chunks for every 2GB part separately, and i don't need 2x8.4GB on my HD.
avatar
Thiev: For some reason it didn't do that with part 3 for me, but maybe it was just one-time bug.
Same thing with me, the chunks from bin file 3 stuck around.

As far as why they use 2gb files, I'd imagine it's just for maximum compatibility with different file systems or just good practice. 2gb is the maximum amount of memory addressable by a 32-bit process and the largest file size in FAT16 (not that anyone is likely using that on a gaming machine anymore).
I already own the original box release and the Steam version. For $5 I can add it to my GOG shelf? Nope, can't resist!!

Ok, so

setup_the_witcher_enhanced_edition-3.bin got merged, but it's chunks remained. This successfully filled my HD leaving less than 2GB free space, the 4th bin file was not merged, but it's chunks are still here. The 5th bin file was merged, chunks deleted. The GOG downloader shows the entry as completed and ready for installation.

Is there a possibility to merge the 4th bin, without re-downloading everything again?

GOGTeam investigate? :D

[edit]
Checking what the installer thinks about it.
Yeah, it tells me, the 4th bin is missing, no surprise there.

Arteveld: [...]
You can re-download the 4th part through browser.
Or, remove the game from downloader and try adding it again. And you can safely delete chunks from 3rd part after merging,

Yeah, i'll do it the oldschool way, browserwise.
Though this should be looked into, in the future releases of GOG Downloader, an option, to retry merging, and be double sure, that chunks are deleted after merging. Hope GOG sees this. ;)

Anyhow, it's been tested.:P
