Surprise, surprise! We have one more EA classic that was tucked away, but we decided not to wait with it till the next wave of EA greatness comes by. That's how cool we are ;)

We believe we could end this newspost at the title, as we're pretty sure everyone is familiar with the SimCity franchise. But if you lived the past 20+ years under a rock and somehow you don't know what the fuss is all about let us explain:

SimCity 2000 Special Edition is the second installment, and way superior than its predecessor, of the most popular city building sim series by Maxis. You play the role of the mayor of a new municipality, starting in 1900. Your task is to expand your small village into a bustling metropolis, and manage it so the citizens are happy and willing to live in it. You're responsible for building housing districts and commercial facilities as well as power plants, streets, bus depots, and more. You need to set and raise taxes and allocate the money cleverly so the city grows.

SimCity 2000 introduced many enhancements to the series. First the view has been changed from a top-down to isometric which allows you to fully customize the terrain before you start the new city. Plenty of new types of facilities now include schools, hospitals, zoos, museums, colleges, and even prisons. Thanks to underground layer you can now build subway and utilities like water pipes under the city. Also your city is not the only one on the map, and you have to build links with other municipalities to increase trade and population. Last but not least, prepare yourself and your city for earthquakes, floods, fire, and other disasters like monster invasion, as they do like to happen--and usually at the worst possible time.

If you want to take a break from expanding your city, you can play one of many pre-made scenarios that are included in the special edition of the game. Some of those scenarios are based on real life events, like the 1989 Hurricane Hugo hitting Charleston in South Carolina or the 1991 Oakland firestorm, and some are just made up by the developer as Hollywood being attacked by a giant robot or nuclear power station major meltdown in center of Manhattan!

But that's not all: SimCity 2000 Special Edition on GOG.com also includes the SimCity Urban Renewal Kit which lets you modify the images used in-game to represent various buildings. Now you can create your own basic bitmap representing your childhood house, your school, or your favorite monument. All that and much more is available now for only $5.99.

Hesusio: I do hope we get SimCity 3000 in the near future. That's my personal favourite of the series.
avatar
Kabuto: That's one idea but I was thinking the Original SimCity should come out before 3000.

The easiest way would be to have simcity day. Releases of SimCity, 3000 and 4.
That's basically just Micropolis without the trademarks stripped. It's a great game, and probably one that people ought to play before going onto more complicated versions.

Blackdrazon: Thankfully, the effect of publicity in SimCity is limited. Riots aren't even that bad! I'd take riots over earthquakes any day.

grviper: Anything in SimCity is just peanuts compared to disasters in Afterlife.
Wasn't one of those a giant nose or something? I keep meaning to figure that game out but it's pretty complicated. Also closer in spirit to something like Caesar I guess.

Speaking of Caesar/Pharaoh/Zeus, what the heck happened with Tilted Mill? Weren't they basically ex-impressions guys? Those games were great. How did SimCity Societies end up being so stupid?

Also, with regards to SimCity 1... While it sort of started everything, it's pretty simple. Compared to the later sim games it just doesn't offer that much.
"Urban Renewal Kit", huh?

I looked into it. It's an editor for the game that requires work. Like most things. Even urban renewal in the real world takes work. Just like the game.

Wow. Life lesson learned.

Is there any reason to play SC other than nostalgia? I know that could be applied to lots of games here, but I'm thinking out loud: SC and SC2000 seem very similar; is there anything different (in a good way) in SC that separates it from SC2000? (I never played SC, but I played 2000 and based on memory and reading I feel like it made a stronger dent in the gaming world than the original, but I could be wrong.)

No original Sim City is pointless apart from nostalgia..
Sim City 2000 is the same game but built on with better graphics and extra features. just like 3000 is to 2000.

Sim City 2000 will always hold a dear place in my heart for gamage as I played it once at a mates house for 30mins when i was 12-13 and after that I was a Sim City junkie.

In fact I have most likely clocked more gaming hours in Sim City series than any other game. That includes MMO's

I guess their hands were tied by EA's expectations (especially the one that even someone who's never played a city building game and/or is about 5 years old can play it).

EA, enough said. To me Simcity Societies is the worst atrocity EA has ever come out with apart from destroying Westwood.

Eh... SC2K was a fairly radical departure from SC in a lot of ways, in terms of how the scale shifted and what was being modeled. The big thing that's unique to SC2K is they way that it models shifting demands and population dynamics over *time*. SC was a much more static entity in that sense. As it grew it needed more stuff but not really *different* stuff.

SC3K was more in the same mold as SC2K and didn't really change a lot, ultimately.
Dont forget Bullforg Pruductions too ;)
No, that's entirely Peter's fault.

There seems to be some issue with SCURK manual -- the very first page throws error 110 in Adobe Reader X. Did anybody have better luck with a different viewer or is it actually a bad pdf?
Note that SimCity manuals don't open on the first page by default -- they open on some introduction. Very neat, much better than most other pdf manuals there.

I see. Sounds like a bug in Adobe Reader X then. Tried Foxit and it seems to be working although the page arrows are rather quirky and don't look right.
