Presenting another classic from Activision back catalogue - one of the best RTS games of all time, with great gameplay and a solid cult following, Dark Reign, is now available on GOG.com.

[url=http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/dark_reign_expansion]Dark Reign is a fast-paced and challenging real-time strategy game, set in a grim sci-fi universe. Unlike RTS games that came before it, Dark Reign used 3D terrain, with all the appropriate tactical advantages and disadvantages. Unlike modern RTS games, however, it is very fast and skill-intensive. Your AI-controlled opponent will keep you on your toes at all times, so fortifying your base, building a huge army and zerging it towards the enemy base just won't cut it here.

A very important feature, unique to this title, is assigning behaviors to your own units, like when they should run away or how aggressive they should be. This essentially leaves most of the mundane micro-management to your computer, where it belongs. Think you can handle this game?
Battlezone is in a similar situation as Netstorm: www.battlezone1.net
One of the game's programmers is even working on a patch to improve compatibility and add a new DirectX renderer.

I squealed like a little girl when I learned this.
Hmmm...excellent title, but I already bought it in a bargain bin for $3. There also seems to be a disturbing trend toward pricing anything remotely interesting (at least to me) at $10. I know this is a publisher decision, but $10 for older titles is pushing my admittedly small budget. $5.99 makes impulse buying much easier...

And I as well
Awesome release GOG!

It's great value at $10. I'm going to go against the flow and say you should be charging more for the work you guys do. Keep it up and looking forward to more great DRM-free titles :)
My favourite genre is RTS and this was the first rts title i ever played on my pc back in '98.It was realy fun game.Cant wait to try it out again!
One of my favourite classic RTS games back in th day. I never even knew there was an expansion. It's a little expensive right now, but as soon as it gets a sale or reduction I'll snatch this up.

I doubt you'll be able to, what with them being tied up with EA, but the older Command & Conquer games would be perfect for the site (Tiberium Dawn, Red Alert 1, etc).
And to think I just took my original copy and did a review of Dark Reign - The Future of War on my blog just 2 days ago.

Talk about good timing!

Here it is for those who want to take a look at me running Dark Reign on my Windows 7 PC and giving my two cents worth about this great game.

A definite buy for me later down the road. At least I can then retire the original + expansion disks.

Awesome, GOG! I already own multiple fully working copies of Dark Reign and it's expansion, but it is one of the greatest RTSes to date, and the soundtrack - especially the soundtrack for the expansion - is also incredibly great. And well, the RTS has been something of an under-represented genre here on GOG.

taczillabr: Awesome, will buy this for sure. I loved this era of strategy games, and it's always great to play against a respectable AI.
Yeah, the late 90's was a fantastic time for the RTS genre. Before terrible 3D cameras, but at a point where high resolution 2D art had reached fantastic looking levels. And just about every game in the genre had great soundtracks too.

The game I'm missing the most in the genre is KKND though.
C&C is already free, but KKND is really hard to get legally.

lackoo1111: Will buy it .
All we need now the Imperium Galactica bundle .
Huzzah! IG2 is one of my favorite games.

On topic, so happy to see Dark Reign here. Can't wait to see DR2.
This came out at the same time in 1997 as Total Annihiliation, and, having been hooked on TA, I just wrote this off back in 97as a wannabe. But after reading some of the comments and reviews, I am goint to give it a shot.
As long as I don't see 'Force Commander' here, damn awful, awful game..
I actually like the game but it's no classic, personally I think 9.99 for an average 90s game is too expensive. Maybe I'm just spoiled by all the deals around nowadays.

Yep, the late 2D RTSs were great... the early 3D on the other hand, meh, and moslty all of them fail at the camera indeed.

Heh I've noticed your vote "KKND. Please." before. ;)

C&C is easy to get from retail, there's the C&C Saga box. KKND I didn't played the original, I just played KKND Xtreme and bits of KKND 2, still Xtreme was great, I had lots of fun with it (and not much with the bugs though and file save errors though). Lots of strategy games from the 1990s deserve to be on GOG.
