Final 48 hours to buy 3 games up to 85% off & unlock 3 mystery mutator games for only $2 each.

The experiment is at its peak. The game selection is reaching its critical mass, and the screens in the lab are flashing images of fun awesomeness at the speed of light. We're risking a serious joy overload here, but one who takes no chances never makes any progress!

Today, we're mixing things up one final time in our Mutator Promo! Both the first batch of discounted base games and the batch we've added on Wednesday, are available simultaneously! At the same time, behind the curtain, we're adding even more games to the test tubes, so - again - you can come across previously not encountered mutators!

Get at least 3 out of 70+ great titles to unlock 3 out of over 50 mystery mutator games for $2 each. What are they? Well, this wouldn't be very scientific if we knew that prior to the experiment! Might be a $5 game, might be an $45 game. Can your personal wishlist rig the outcome of the experiment? Who knows! The beauty of our chaotic universe at its finest, now in the Mutator Promo on GOG.com.

These are the final hours of this promo offer. It will Sunday, October 12, at 10:59AM GMT. Don't miss your chance at experiencing the wonder of discovery!
I have so far taken part in this sale twice. I usually use these types of sales to take a chance on games that I am not sure on. Same with the mutator gamble. For me the 6 games I bought as mutators I would not have bought if I new what they were. However the overall result is that the 6 games I chose to buy are no longer at the savings they once were.

From a practical point of view I look at like going out for a pint or going to the cinema. You pay your money and you take a chance. The overall expenditure so far is less than a night out and the benefits gained last a lot longer.
Just to update to see if the mutator forecasting works:

Round 1:

Bought:
Outlast: Whistleblower
Night of the Rabbit
Long Live the Queen

Mutators:
Eador: Genesis
Cannon Fodder 2
Capitalism 2
*none were on wishlist

Round 2:
Bought:

Sword of the Stars the PIT Gold
Cannon Fodder
Eschalon Book III

Mutators:
Divinity: Dragon Commander imperial edition
Influx
Sword of the Samurai
*none were on wishlist

Round 3:
Bought:
Shadowrun Returns
Aarklash Legacy
Dracula 4+5

Mutators:
Vertical Drop Heroes HD
Shelter
Smugglers V
*again, none from the wishlisted

So far didn't get anything from the wishlist as a mutator, but at least I think it's better than knowingly buying games you don't want to complete a bundle in order to average out 70-75% off ... It's also great that there is far less time pressure than in the insomnia promo (ok, once was fun, but then it got a bit tedious).

Finally, I decided to give it a go, I bought

Divine Divinity
Beyond Divinity
Journey of a roach

And 2 mutators, which ended up being

Great battles collector's edition (meh)
Vertical Drop Heroes (this one looks interesting)

So once again, it's a gamble of course, but I was hopping to get at least one 15 bucks game.. but, the first one is 6 bucks and the second one is 5... oh well
OK, so I buyed 3 games:
+ Divinty 1
+ Overlord
+ Carmageddon 2

I did choose 1 mutator and got:
+ Back to the Future - The Game
Would be nice to be able to buy just one game. I think I'll pass rather than buy stuff I'm unsure about.
Here's hoping that in two-ish hours when GOG normally ticks over and reveals new games etc. that the mutators will change.

Its another 24 hours (its a 48 hour turnover of games)

adaliabooks: You can just buy the normal discounted games, and you don't need to buy three.
You only need to buy three to unlock the chance to get mutators
Unfortunately you cannot buy less than three games ... with less than three games selected the "checkout now" button is not available/clickable.

I didn't mean all of the games - I just meant the mutators for people when buying games...
At the moment, my mutators are Shelter, BeatBuddy and Vertical Drop Heroes. Fingers crossed that in 2 hours, when I attempt to buy some qualifiers from this round, the mutator games will have changed for me.

Hmmm. My bad, I'm almost sure it let me hit checkout with less games before...

Niggles: Like the pot of gold stuff, it *is* a gamble and customers are made aware (or should be aware) of that when paying for the mutators. Thats the way its meant to work. Knowing what your rolling is kind of cheating and customers will keep rolling until they get what they want (i reckon most will try for the highest value - or overpriced mutator - lets face it - people will try to get the best value.....which isnt really quite fair for dev/GOG as it will imbalance the way a given game sells etc ) . Great for you. Crappy for devs/GOG. While GOG is pretty generous based on what ive seen in the past, this would be too open to abuse by the customer (look at it from the business view). .Take the promo for what its worth. it you dont like it (im sort of iffy - id much prefer insomnia way myself) - dont take part in it.
i covered this:

even if that's absolutely set in stone and it won't change until the next mutator arrives.

i wouldn't mind the mutator promo so much if it were a known quanitty. even /if/ you're forced to wait for the next mutator to show up, so long as you know what you're going to get, that would feel less like a straight-out gamble to me.

Try it now, see if it lets you get by to the checkout without a minimum of 3 games selected. It will not ;)
And also it was the same from the begining, i clearly remember wanting only 1 game from the first selection (3 days ago) and couldn't got by to checkout without minimum 3 games selected ... so i'm sure you just confuse things ;)
avatar
adaliabooks: But I feel I should point out you don't need to buy the mutators. You can just buy the normal discounted games, and you don't need to buy three. You only need to buy three to unlock the chance to get mutators (which is a bit crappy, I might take the risk if I didn't have to also spend money for the privilege)
tried that. couldn't get checkout to work unless there were exactly three things in my basket. hang on. i'll go do it again, just to be sure. just checked. "checkout now" stays greyed out if i pick one or two games, but lights up like a christmas tree if i pick three. i feel that's a bit sleazy on gog's behalf.

avatar
adaliabooks: And if you want more than three games theres nothing stopping you from making two orders...
not a really optimal solution. that hits your credit card twice.

avatar
adaliabooks: I don't get all the hate. It's a gambling promo. If you don't want to gamble wait for the next one. Judging by the amount of activity it's created on the forum it must be doing something right.
well, it's not hate so much as constructive criticism. other people can like it as much as they want, that's cool. i'm just not a fan of it. and that's also cool. as a confirmed non-gambler, i just don't like things like this [and/or pot of gold] - it literally feels like a lockbox you might get in a free-to-play game and my feelings are that gog should be "better than that."

lostwolfe: ... i don't like is the fact that you HAVE to buy three games or bust. i may not [and have not, in fact] been interested in three games in the past two mutators [...] likewise, you may ONLY have three games. not more. this feels a little slimy to me, i'm afraid, gog.
Ditto. I don't care for that kind of sales method so I'm skipping the entire promo.
